Has your dog suddenly developed a head tilt, started walking in circles, or seemed dizzy and disoriented? It might be vestibular disease — and while it can look scary, the good news is: most dogs recover beautifully with time, support, and rehabilitation.

🧠 The vestibular system helps with balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. When it’s disrupted — whether from old dog vestibular syndrome, ear infections, toxicity, or neurologic causes — dogs can appear drunk, confused, or even unable to stand.

Common symptoms include:
1️⃣ Sudden onset of head tilt
2️⃣ Loss of balance, falling or rolling
3️⃣ Nystagmus (rapid eye movement)
4️⃣ Nausea or vomiting due to motion sensitivity

Most cases — especially idiopathic geriatric vestibular disease — begin to improve within days, but full recovery can take weeks. This is where rehab plays a key role.

How rehabilitation helps dogs with vestibular disease:
🧍‍♂️ Balance and coordination retraining: Gentle exercises help the brain adapt to changes in vestibular input, improving stability and walking ability faster
🐾 Proprioceptive work: Tasks that improve body awareness help dogs figure out where their limbs are in space — critical when their world feels tilted
🪜 Graduated mobility support: We use slings, harnesses, and environmental changes to keep dogs safe and mobile while their balance improves
🌊 Hydrotherapy: In some cases, underwater treadmill work allows dogs to relearn controlled walking without the fear of falling
🌿 Modalities like acupuncture or laser therapy can support neurologic recovery and help manage any lingering discomfort
🫂 Caregiver support and education: You’re not alone — we teach you how to lift safely, reduce fall risks, and know when to expect improvement

Most dogs with vestibular disease go on to live full, happy lives — some even keep their adorable head tilt as a badge of resilience. 🐶💛

📍 If your dog is recovering from vestibular disease, let’s work together to help them find their feet again — safely and confidently.

So your dog was diagnosed with a neurologic disorder - maybe they are going for surgery, maybe they aren't. Either way you are worried about how you will care for them in the first couple of weeks after surgery or injury.

Which is why we created a step-by-step guide to caring for your canine companion in the first two weeks following spinal surgery or injury. While the first two weeks involve a lot of rest and recovery, there are several things that you can do early on to speed up your dog's recovery, and when it comes to neurologic injuries, early intervention definitely improves outcome.

🌭 Happy National Dachshund Day! 🐾

They’re long. They’re low. They’re full of personality.
And let’s be honest… they’re a little bit neurologically complicated — but we love them even more for it! 💛

Whether they’re zooming down the hallway, burrowing under blankets, or dealing bravely with back issues, Dachshunds are tough little sausages with hearts (and spines) of gold.

🎯 IVDD? No problem.
🧠 Wobbly walk? We’ve got exercises for that.
🩵 Whether they're recovering from surgery or working hard to avoid it, we're here for every wiggle and wobble.

Here’s to all the mighty minis out there — your resilience inspires us, your stubbornness challenges us, and your snuggles make it all worth it.

🥳 We love you, Dachshunds — just the way you are.

If your older dog is slowing down, losing strength in their back legs, and starting to sound a little hoarse - they may be showing signs of GOLPP (Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy).

This is more than just a breathing disorder. GOLPP is a progressive, degenerative nerve disease that affects the voice box (larynx), hind limbs, and eventually other parts of the nervous system.

Many pet parents first notice the laryngeal paralysis component — noisy breathing, gagging, or stridor. But over time, hind limb weakness, scuffing toenails, reduced endurance, and difficulty with stairs often follow. These aren’t just signs of aging — they’re signs of nerve dysfunction.

🧠 So where does rehab fit in?

Rehabilitation can’t stop GOLPP, but it can slow the decline, maintain quality of life, and give your dog more good days.

Here’s how:

✅ Preserving strength — Customized exercises target the hips, core, and spinal stabilizers to prolong hind end function and help with balance and coordination.
✅ Mobility training — We teach dogs how to compensate safely as their neurologic function changes, introducing ramps, non-slip surfaces, and harnesses and carts before they're struggling.
✅ Modalities like acupuncture, laser, and PEMF can improve comfort, circulation, and nerve signalling, especially in dogs who fatigue easily or are anxious about their changing mobility.
✅ Home care support — We guide you on simple lifestyle changes, from trimming nails to avoiding slick floors and preventing overheating — all critical for dogs with GOLPP.

👩‍⚕️ We monitor and adapt — GOLPP can progress unpredictably. Having a rehab team means your dog is regularly assessed, and your care plan evolves as their needs change.

GOLPP doesn’t have to mean the end of independence. With rehab, your dog can stay strong, stable, and joyful for much longer than you'd expect.

📍If your senior dog is showing early signs of weakness or noisy breathing, let's talk. Early intervention makes a difference.

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a progressive, inherited disease that affects the spinal cord — slowly robbing dogs of their ability to use their hind limbs. It often starts with subtle signs: dragging nails, slipping on floors, or trouble rising. Over time, weakness worsens, leading to full paralysis.

While there’s no cure, rehabilitation is one of the few proven ways to slow the disease’s progression and give your dog more time with a good quality of life.

💡 How rehab helps dogs with DM:

🌊 Underwater treadmill therapy allows for supported, low-impact walking that preserves muscle mass and joint health while protecting the spinal cord
🏋️ Strength and balance exercises improve core stability, helping dogs maintain posture and coordination as long as possible
🛠️ Mobility support, including harnesses and carts, are introduced early to give dogs freedom and prevent injury
🧠 Neurologic stimulation keeps the brain-spinal cord connection active through targeted tasks that improve proprioception (body awareness)
🫂 Caregiver education and support ensure you’re equipped to help your dog safely navigate changes at home, from flooring to daily routines

DM is emotionally hard — but dogs with a rehab plan can walk longer, fall less, and enjoy life more. Early intervention matters. So does a team that understands what you’re going through.

📍If your dog has been diagnosed with DM or is showing early signs, reach out. We’re here to help you walk this path — together.

06/06/2025

IVDD is one of the most common neurologic conditions that we treat in dogs, and occurs when a spinal disc herniates or ruptures and presses against the spinal cord. Clinical signs range from mild back pain to full paralysis, and unfortunately some of our favourite breeds like Dachshunds and French Bulldogs are particularly prone at any age. Surgery may be required to decompress the spine, and rehabilitation is key in restoring motor control and coordination. In less severe cases or when surgery is not possible, many dogs will regain an acceptable level of function with rehabilitation alone.

How do we do it?
🌊 We use land and/or underwater treadmill to provide low-impact gait retraining and muscle activation.
🧠 Balance and coordination exercises to re-train the nervous system.
⚡️ Electrical stimulation to passively work on muscle recruitment until the nervous system kicks in.
👐 Manual therapy and laser to reduce pain and inflammation post-injury.
📍 Acupuncture to provide stimulation to damaged nerves.

Our goal: help dogs get back on their feet with better strength and confidence than before. 💪

Providing integrative medicine for your pet in the comfort of your own home.

What is integrative veterinary medicine?

Integrative veterinary medicine is a rapidly growing field of veterinary medicine that combines the best of conventional treatment with alternative and complementary therapies.

What are the benefits of providing treatments at home?

My goal is to make your pet’s treatments as easy and low stress as possible. Home consultations allow me to evaluate your pet in their natural environment, where they are most comfortable.
