The last week of April every year is Veterinary Receptionist Week and we wanted to take this opportunity to recognize the absolute superheroes of our practice - Allie, Katie and Lindsay - for everything that they do to keep our little boat afloat.

Managing the day to day operations of a practice while also ensuring that all of our clients and patients are well cared for is no small feat, and these three do it effortlessly and are the definition of true team players. We literally could not function without them.

We are so grateful for everything that you do every day to care for our clients and patients, and to help keep the rest of us in line. 🥰❤️😘

Age is only a number right?

Senior dogs benefit from regular movement to stay mobile, pain-free, and happy.
Low-impact exercises can help maintain muscle mass, support joints, and slow down age-related decline. Here are 3 gentle exercises we love for seniors:

1️⃣ Weight Shifts: Gently shift your dog’s weight from side to side while they stand—great for balance and proprioception (aka knowing where their body is in space).
2️⃣ Cavalettis: What goes around comes around. Stepping over objects is just as important for our seniors as it is for our puppies to work on range and motion and proprioception.
3️⃣ Heat/stretching/massage: If your dog is a senior patient of mine you have heard me drone on about the under-rated-ness (?) of stretching for senior dogs, and everyone for that matter. If we all took 5 minutes at the end of every day to stretch, we would all be considerably more mobile. My faves for my seniors are hip, shoulder and spine stretches, paired with some pre-stretching heat and massage 🤤, and ICYMI go back and review my post from Nov 29 for a demo.

Slow, steady, and supportive wins the race, but if your senior just isn't ready to slow down yet, ask us about our 6 Week Transformation Program or our Sunday Senior Socials to keep them active and engaged for years to come.

What about those fit and focused adult dogs?

Your dog is in their prime—let’s keep them strong, agile, and injury-free!
Fitness helps active adult dogs maintain muscle tone, joint stability, and mental stimulation. Try these 3 intermediate-level exercises this week:

1️⃣ Sit-to-Stand Reps: This canine “squat” helps build rear limb and core strength. Make this one more difficult by increasing the number of repetitions or have them squat up a hill.
2️⃣ Side Step Walking: With a treat lure, encourage your dog to step sideways—great for hip strength and coordination. Level up by placing your dog's front paws on an elevated surface and have them side step in one direction then the other.
3️⃣ Incline Paws-Up: Have your dog place their front paws on a low step or platform to activate shoulder, hind limb, glute and core muscles. Consider this to be your dog's entry level plank challenge. Modifications for this one are endless including increasing the height of the step, stretching forward, and increasing the duration of the hold.

These exercises are great for active dogs, sport dogs, or couch potatoes in need of a challenge! Check out videos of these exercises and more on our YouTube channel https://f.mtr.cool/jbdhufohch but as always - check with your veterinarian or a rehab practitioner to ensure that these exercises are safe and appropriate for your dog.

Is your new puppy at risk for arthritis? 🤔

Did you know that certain breeds are considered to be more at risk for developmental orthopedic issues like hip and elbow dysplasia (we're looking at you large and giant breeds), and up to 40% of these dogs will already have signs of arthritis by the time they are 4 years old?

If your new bundle of joy made our top 10 list of at-risk breeds, you will want to keep reading to see how you can be proactive in keeping those joints healthy!

📢 Top 10 breeds at risk (note that this list is by no means exhaustive):
1️⃣ Labrador Retriever
2️⃣ German Shepherd
3️⃣ Golden Retriever
5️⃣ Bernese Mountain Dog
6️⃣ Newfoundland

8️⃣ Mastiff Breeds
9️⃣ Border Collie
🔟 French Bulldog

✅ Consider rehab therapies 💦

Did you know that proper puppy socialization plays a huge role in their long-term physical health? The critical window for socialization is between 3 to 14 weeks of age, when puppies are most receptive to new experiences (PSA: make sure they are vaccinated and dewormed before starting play dates). Early exposure to different people, environments, and other dogs helps puppies grow into confident, well-adjusted adults - and that confidence directly impacts their movement and fitness!

✅ Well-socialized puppies are less likely to develop fear-based movement issues.
✅ They’re more eager to explore, play, and engage in physical activity.
✅ A positive relationship with new environments makes vet visits, rehab, and exercise stress-free as they grow.

Give your pup the best start! 🐾 Join our Puppy Fit classes to build confidence, coordination, and strength in a fun, structured environment. Check out the 🔗 link in our bio or DM us to sign up!

Unfortunately orthopedic disease can affect puppies of all breeds and ages, and early recognition is the key to maintaining their long term comfort and mobility. With ongoing advancements in pain management and rehabilitation, many juvenile orthopedic diseases can be effectively managed throughout the puppy years and long into adulthood.

Check out our guides on hip and elbow dysplasia to recognize the early warning signs, and have a better understanding of what you can do if your puppy is diagnosed.

Puppy Fit is not designed to turn your tiny puppy into a jacked adolescent - we don't advocate for that and if you want to understand why too much exercise can be detrimental to your puppy's development, check out our recent blog on The Puppy Workout Plan!

What Puppy Fit is designed to do is ensure that your puppy is developing the confidence and social skills to set them up for success in the future, while at the same time introducing them to an appropriate level of activity, exploration and play to satisfy their growing physical and mental needs.

Our trainer Allie has over 10 years of experience in getting puppies off on the right paw and setting their caretakers up with the right information and resources to support their new family member's development. Every Puppy Fit class has a Q&A period about all things related to puppy behaviour so you will always leave with the confidence that both you and your pup are on the right track. 🩷

Classes start this Sunday so make sure your reserve your space by booking online (🔗 in bio) or calling us at the clinic!

One of the common questions that we get about puppy fitness is: How much is too much? And yes, even though it seems like they don’t have an off switch some days, they can all overdo it.

Here are some of the Do’s and Don’ts that we discuss in our recent blog post. Head over to the 🔗 in our bio to get all the info.

Do:
✅ Encourage natural, self-directed movement and play.
✅ Keep sessions short and fun to avoid overexertion.
✅ Pay attention to signs of fatigue (slowing or laying down, disinterest)
✅ Offer a variety of activities to prevent boredom and overuse injuries.
✅ Allow your puppy to have calm downtime to develop a balanced activity/rest cycle.
✅ Consult your veterinarian or rehabilitation practitioner for breed-specific advice.

Don’t:
❌ Push your puppy beyond their comfort zone.
❌ Assume they can keep up with adult dogs on hikes or jogs.
❌ Encourage roughhousing or aggressive play.
❌ Assume that all puppies have the same needs—different breeds and individual puppies have varying exercise tolerances.
❌ Ignore signs of limping or stiffness (if in doubt, get it checked out!).
❌ Skip rest days—recovery is just as important as playtime.

On this International Women's Day we want to celebrate every bad ass mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and coworker out there that are the ultimate partners, parents, caretakers, multitaskers, and make s**t happen-ers every single day. 💪

I am immensely grateful to this amazing, strong, supportive and hilarious group of women that I get to spend my time with every single day; who make coming to work never feel like work and allow me to torture them with "fun team building activities" like spin classes. Women who sweat together, stay together. 😘😘

Providing integrative medicine for your pet in the comfort of your own home.

What is integrative veterinary medicine?

Integrative veterinary medicine is a rapidly growing field of veterinary medicine that combines the best of conventional treatment with alternative and complementary therapies.

What are the benefits of providing treatments at home?

My goal is to make your pet’s treatments as easy and low stress as possible. Home consultations allow me to evaluate your pet in their natural environment, where they are most comfortable.
