With the 4th of July quickly approaching, please make sure your pets are safe.

Fireworks can be scary to you pets. This fear can lead them to bolt and become lost. Making sure your had has a collar with your contact information and is microchipped is the best way to get your furry family home safely.

If your pet has anxiety, please make sure to contact your veterinarian to see what ways to best help your pet.

Summer is in full swing! Make sure that your pets don't play outside during the times when temperatures are at the highest.

Make sure to provide your pet with free access to water.

Always check the pavement before walking your pets. If its too hot for your hand its too hot for their paws.

Heavy or prolonged panting, excessive drooling, labored or difficult breathing, whining or barking for no apparent reason, vomiting and/or diarrhea, lack of coordination, lethargy/weakness, seizures, uncontrolled muscle tremors
and collapse are all potential signs of heat stroke.
If you see any of these signs in your pet take them to a veterinarian immediately.

Its national chip your pet month!

Microchiping is a great way to make sure your pet gets home after being lost.

Its very important to make sure your pets microchip is registered and to also check your information once a year and make any changes necessary so the information is always accurate.

Pets microchips should be scanned once yearly to make sure it is still functioning.

May is mental health awareness month.

With the end of this month closing in, we wanted to shed some light on the mental health crisis in veterinary medicine.

What we do is not easy. Yes, sometimes we ge the chance to play with a cute puppy or kitten or see a cute cat or dog for a comprehensive visit, but a big portion of our job is healing the sick and broken.

And sometimes, no matter how hard we fight for a pet, we lose that fight.
It is hard to lose a patient in any situation.

We work so hard and care so much for each and every pet and owner that it takes its toll.

Please remember to be kind, be patient, and we are human too.

And for anyone suffering, please know that you are not alone. You mean the world to someone dear to you, and you bring light into the world.

Hope everyone had an amazing holiday! With New Year's coming quickly please be sure to keep your pets safe.

Thanksgiving is this Thursday. As everyone celebrates please be sure to keep your 4 legged family safe.
If you are having company over make sure that your pet has a quiet place to get away from all the hustle and bustle.
Also make sure your pet does not get into anything they arent supposed to. Veterinary hospitals tend to see a lot of foreign bodies, pancreatitis and vomiting and diarrhea due to pets eating food, bones and other things.

Be sure to keep your pets safe tonight. Some time masks and people in costume can be scary to your pets.

With so much misinformation at our fingertips now, it’s hard for any of us to know what to trust. Many pet owners walk into their appointments already on their guard.

To build a rapport with these clients, start by making sure they know you are both there for the same reason: to give their pets the best care possible. 💯

Effective, empathetic client communication is just one of the themes kept front and center in the brand new 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines. Read the full guidelines, check out our vaccine calculator, and download resources at aaha.org/canine-vaccinations. 🐶

One of the most common questions we get in the veterinary hospital is why is spaying and neutering so important? There are many benefits to spaying or neutering your pet but what is the difference between spaying and neutering?
The term spay refers to an ovariohysterectomy in female pets which includes removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. Whereas the term neuter or castration refers to an orchiectomy which is removal of the te**es in male pets.
Now for the important question, why are these procedures so important? Spaying and neutering prevents pets from being able to reproduce. This intern helps with overpopulation of pets in shelters.
Spaying and neutering also helps with certain behavior issues. Intact dogs and cats tend to roam in search of a mate. This roaming behavior can lead to lost pets and injuries or even death due to being preyed upon or being hit by cars. These procedures can also help with aggression issues and reduce marking and spraying behaviors around the house.
Spaying and neutering can also extend your pets life expectancy. Pets that are not spayed or neutered have a greater risk of getting breast, ovarian, uterine, testicular and prostate cancers. Unspayed pets are also at risk for developing pyometra. Pyometra is when the uterus fills up with puss. This is an emergency health issue that can lead to your pet being seriously ill.

Here in Florida our allergy season never really ends but we do have certain times during the year where it peaks.

Spring is the peak for allergy season! You may not be the only one suffering from the pollen boost. Pets may show their allergy signs a little bit differently than you or I.

Some of the signs that your pet may be suffering from allergies include but are not limited to
-itchiness

Flea and tick prevention year round is very important for your pets health.

Fleas can cause an intestinal parasite infection called tapeworms. These worms attach to the intestines of your pet. Owners usually noticed them in their pets stools as white rice looking worms.
Fleas can also cause skin issues due to your pet being itchy. Most pets are actually allergic to flea saliva which can cause severe irritation and itchiness. If a pet constantly itches it can lead to secondary skin infections.

Ticks can carry a variety of disease that can be transferred to your pet including Lyme disease. It is very important to check your pet for ticks and have them properly removed immediately.

There are several different products on the market to protect your pet from both fleas and ticks. You can make an appointment for us to discuss which would be best for your pet.

The ASPCA’s Top 10 Pet Toxins

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications
OTC medications like acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen harm more pets than any other household item.

Chocolate
Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs & cats.

Rodenticide
Rodenticide poisoning can lead to liver failure, internal bleeding, and even death.

Garden Products
Garden products like fertilizers and slug and snail baits can cause poisoning in pets.

Human Prescription Medications
A wide range of human prescription medications can cause toxicity in animals. These include common drugs like Adderall, diazepam, and Xanax.

Household Toxicants
Lots of everyday products found in our homes pose a risk to pets. These include chemical cleaning products, beauty products, and home repair products.

Veterinary Products*
Veterinary products can lead to serious illness or death if they are ingested in the wrong dosage or by the wrong animal.
*Given in the correct dosages, veterinary products like pest preventatives and NSAIDs are highly beneficial for pets. Just make sure to follow your veterinarian’s instructions to ensure all medications are administered correctly.

Human Food
Many human foods, including grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, protein bars, and xylitol are highly toxic to pets.

Flowers and Plants
Common flowers and houseplants like azalea, lilies, and oleander can be extremely toxic to pets if ingested.

Insecticide
Many insecticides are enticing to pets, but ingestion can lead to severe symptoms including tremors, seizures, and even death.

Do you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance?
Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control at 888.426.3345

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET HAS INGESTED A POISON
1). GET YOUR PET TO A SAFE PLACE
-First, make sure to place your pet somewhere safe. Keep an eye out for any toxic substances that may have spilled onto the floor or furniture, and move your pet to an area that's free from spills or toxic fumes.

2). TRY TO IDENTIFY THE POISON
- Next, try to identify the substance that your pet may have come into contact with. If possible, keep the packaging to show to your veterinarian. This will help them determine the best course of action for your pet.

3). SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP IMMEDIATELY
-After you've completed the first two steps, seek professional help
immediately by calling a veterinary clinic or pet poison helpline. Here are the phone numbers for two of the most popular pet poison helplines:
• ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center – 888-426-4435
• Pet Poison Helpline – 800-213-6680

4). FOLLOW THE ADVICE OF YOUR VETERINARIAN OR THE POISON
HOTLINE
-Follow the advice of your veterinarian or the pet poison helpline closely. This will help ensure the best possible outcome for your pet.

5). NEVER ATTEMPT TO TREAT POISONING ALONE WITHOUT EXPERT GUIDANCE
-Finally, it's important to note that you should never attempt to treat poisoning without expert guidance. Different toxins react in different ways, and trying to treat your pet at home without help
could do more harm than good.
