I saw someone shared a post about arena etiquette so I wanted to make my own and show visual demonstrations as I felt the one I saw didn’t show any visual examples!!

Arena etiquette is so important and not a lot of people really know or understand how it works to keep an arena safe when riding with multiple people! I hope this is helpful for those who are visual learners ❤️

With spring approaching, many are looking to enjoy the outdoors and what better way than through horseback riding lessons that offer not just the thrill of the ride but also the convenience of mobility. Understanding the demand for flexible and accessible equestrian activities, My unique service stands out by offering “I travel to you” riding lessons, ensuring you can enjoy this beautiful experience right at your doorstep. With the 2024 lesson prices, I have meticulously structured my rates to ensure that all fuel costs are included in the price, guaranteeing no hidden fees or additional charges for my travel to your location. This transparent pricing model allows my clients to plan their lessons without worrying about fluctuating travel costs, making it easier than ever to schedule a session as the warmer weather arrives. Whether you’re a novice eager to learn or an experienced rider looking to refine your skills, My service is designed to bring the joys of riding directly to you, making it a convenient and unforgettable experience as spring blooms.

During the outdoor lesson season, I provide a unique opportunity for horse owners to enhance their skills alongside their equine partners by offering specialized training rides for your horse if needed. Understanding the importance of a personal connection and familiarity, I do not utilize my personal horse for these lessons, ensuring that you and your horse can grow and learn together in a comfortable and familiar setting. This personalized approach allows for adjustment and training tailored specifically to your horse’s needs, ensuring that both you and your horse get the most out of each session. Whether your horse requires fine-tuning of certain skills or you’re looking to deepen your bond through guided instruction, my services are designed to cater to those specific needs.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about my lesson programs!

✨Tidi-Bit Tuesday✨

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of equine dentition. Mares have a full set of 36-40 teeth, while their male counterparts, geldings and stallions, have 40-44 pearly whites. Foals are born with 24 baby teeth, aptly called “caps”, that eventually give way to permanent adult teeth.

A horse’s teeth are ever-growing, with long tooth roots at birth that gradually shorten over their lifetime. In fact, Horse’s teeth take up more space in their head than their brain! Vets can estimate a horse’s age by examining patterns of wear on their teeth. When properly taught all horse owners can learn how to age a horse by their teeth aswell!!

It is highly recommended to have your horse or pony’s teeth evaluated at least annually by a veterinarian or specialized equine dental technician to determine if they need to be “Floated”

What Is Floating? Floating a horse’s teeth is the process of gently filing away sharp edges or hooks to present a firm, flat surface for more efficient chewing. The small file or rasp used to do this is called a float, which gives the process its name. More frequent dental exams may be warranted for young horses under 5 years, seniors over 20 years, or animals with known dental issues. While floating, your horse would be sedated to make a more comfortable experience for them but non-sedation options are available for those who rather their horses be more aware!

Subtle signs like dropping food, bad breath, weight loss, excessive drooling, or behavior changes under saddle can indicate dental problems. However, as prey animals, horses are stoic and may show no obvious symptoms despite oral pain. Regular dental care is essential for your horse’s health and happiness.

✨Tid-Bit Tuesday✨

Let’s talk about hackamores/bitless bridle’s, Knowing how to ride with bit’s and hackamores is extremely important in my professional opinion! While it helps you become more well rounded it also helps you to adjust how you ride whether it’s your own or someone else’s!!

Let’s start with basic’s, for those unfamiliar with what a hackamore is! Hackamores are a type of bitless bridle which works by applying pressure to the nose, poll and chin groove. Unlike a traditional bridle with a bit, there is no pressure or leverage on the mouth. There is a common misconception that bitless bridles are kinder than those with a bit. But just like bit’s hackamores can cause serious damage if not used properly!!!!

Hackamores come in various types and designs with different uses and roles. They are important just like bit’s to help you guide and controlling your horse. Each hackamore serves a specific function such as providing comfort to the horse or helping the rider communicate effectively. Understanding the different types of hackamores can enhance a riders experience by choosing the right one for the intended purpose. It is essential for riders to learn about the various hackamores to ensure proper handling and care of their horse.

What are the types of hackamores/bitless bridles: (See photos in post to get a visual representation, of what each type looks like, Please keep in mind there are multiple different styles of each with all individual purposes)

English Hackamore: The English hackamore replaces the nose band and bit on an English bridle. It can be used in show jumping competition and for trail riding. The long shanks on the hackamore create leverage when the reins are pulled much like a curb bit

Mechanical Hackamore: The mechanical hackamore works in much the same way as the English hackamore. This style is more often used on western bridles and has a longer shank giving it more leverage.

Bosal: The bosal is a type of hackamore that is only used in the western discipline. One rein is attached with two knots at the knot end of the bosal making a continuous rein (similar to English). The bosal is often used to train horses and may be used for showing young horses in some competitions.

Bitless Bridle: The bitless bridle is a relatively new invention. The bitless bridle is not allowed in most competitions. This bridle is used with two reins and applies pressure to the nose without the use of a shank. As with all bit free devices the bitless bridle can be harsh when used by a heavy handed rider

With proper knowledge you can find what works best for you and your horse, I personally ride in a mechanical hackamore due to how I ride my horse and what we do for competitions!

Understanding the mood of your horse is crucial for fostering a strong, trusting partnership and ensuring both your safety and their well-being. Observing your horse’s body language, such as the position of their ears, tail, and posture, can provide clear indicators of their emotional state, whether they are feeling relaxed, anxious, or agitated. Recognizing these signals allows you to adjust your approach accordingly, enhancing communication and minimizing the risk of misunderstandings or accidents, therefore, emphasizing the importance of being attuned to your horse’s mood in every interaction.

**Copied from friends post, worth the read**

Dear dedicated adult amateur equestrian,

We see you.

We see you meticulously planning your show season within a budget, balancing passion and financial realities.

We see you choosing that seasoned, reliable horse over a flashy newcomer, valuing experience and partnership above all.

We see you at the barn early in the morning and late at night, dedicating every possible moment to your sport and your horse.

We see you tirelessly searching for deals on tack and apparel, ensuring you and your horse look your best without breaking the bank.

We see you at competitions, doing your own grooming and care, demonstrating your commitment and love for your equine partner.

We see you entering the ring with grace, competing against top-tier horses and riders, and embracing the challenge with a smile.

We see you offering support and encouragement to your fellow equestrians, fostering a sense of community and sportsmanship.

We see you cherishing every ride, whether it ends with a ribbon or a lesson learned, recognizing the value in both.

We see you, after long days at the show, relishing the quiet moments with your horse, reflecting on the journey and the unbreakable bond you’ve built.

We see you understanding the true wealth isn’t in owning the most expensive horse, but in the experiences, growth, and relationships cultivated through your dedication to equestrianism.

We see you. And I hope you realize that your passion, resilience, and commitment make you invaluable to the equestrian community.

C**t starting is the process of training a young horse, also known as a c**t, to accept a rider and respond to basic commands. It is an important step in the development of a horse’s training and allows them to become well-behaved and safe for future riders. The process involves introducing the c**t to various stimuli, such as saddles, bridles, and the weight of a rider, in a gradual and controlled manner. I use positive reinforcement and patience, consistent methods to build trust and establish a strong foundation for the horse’s training. C**t starting requires skill and experience to ensure the safety and success of both the horse and the rider!!

With temperatures dropping down to -40 the next few days in southern Alberta keep an eye out on your ponies!!!

Blanket as required, make sure your furry friends have access to feed, water and a shelter!! Temperature fluctuations like this can be harmful to your horses so taking the proper protections is extremely important ❤️ If your horses lives outdoors it’s best to leave them out when the weather is like this!!

Bringing your horse in and out during cold snaps isn’t as helpful as you think, if you are bringing them in and out your are constantly changing their body temp which can shock their system🥺 leaving them out keeps it constant and keeps them in better shape to stay warm!!

I will see you all after the cold snap🥶

STAY WARM 🤍

Some very educational information about how horses grow!! 🙌🏻

Have you ever heard the saying “horses don’t stop growing until they’re 7 years old” ??? Well, this is exactly why.

All horses grow the same no matter the size or breed. Horses are in their “prime” at the age of 8-11 due to the fact they are officially done growing! Our 4 legged friends grown in stages, hence why you really don’t wanna be doing to to much with your yearlings (1 year olds), doing a little such as saddle breaking and exposing them to all things scary 😂

Let’s talk training equipment/tack.

No matter how young or old your horse may be, using training aid’s is so beneficial for them! The older the horse the more broke they usually are, by applying training equipment/tack to your ride or lunge keeps your horse(s) well rounded, in shape and helps their mind stay in constant work!!

It doesn’t mean they aren’t “broke” it genuinely just helps them stay up to date on all aspects of their training!

Draw reins, Side reins, German Martingales, Waldhausen Lunging aid etc!

**Doesn’t matter what you use as long as you use it correctly**

This is the 2nd time this little man has ever had anyone sit on his back! Getting your c**ts comfortable so young will make for such an easier first ride, exposing them to tack, noise etc is such a key part to the breaking process🙌🏻
