We love hearing about riders’ firsts with their horses! CFE sponsored rider Katie Hough from Beaux Rêves Equestrian and her gelding Weston won the open Intro level Championship and intro warm-up class - Intro C. This was Weston’s first under saddle show away from home, first time in an indoor arena, and his first time cantering outside his home ring. So proud of you Katie and Weston!

✨ We 💙 what we do ✨

"We recently contacted Sam and her team and it was such an amazing experience watching my horse be fit for the perfect bit and bridle! I don’t have the best knowledge on bits and bridles so it was very interesting to see how Hide responded when trying out different options and fits.

Hide has a habit of opening his mouth, it is just a normal thing that he does whether it is on the crossties or when riding. I told Samantha this information and after she watched him go for a few minutes she picked out about four or five bits for us to try. She did a very good job at quickly switching out the bits and keeping Hide calm, as he was really feeling himself that day.

The process went very smoothly and she was very knowledgeable of knowing which bits would help with Hide’s chewing/mouth-opening problem. When it came time to fit Hide for a new bridle it was very interesting to learn how some bridles put pressure in bad areas and how to point that out. She left me with a couple options to try and I could not be more thrilled with the results! Thank you so much, Samantha!!"

We often see bit fit issues, like in this fleshy Andalusian gelding, where the bit contacts his canine teeth. Raising the bit higher would stretch his lips uncomfortably. The solution is a different bit shape—stable and thin, not a clanky three-piece or loose ring.

So we helped this owner try a few different options to ensure the comfort of her partner. Ultimately we chose a Fager locking bit with a baby fulmer sidepiece for him, which offered the right shape and stability without making him rigid. Now that this lovely horse is comfortable, many of his connection issues have been resolved and the rider reports that every ride is now fun!

✨ Attention Mare Owners ✨

Most of us have been told that canine teeth are generally only found in male horses, but can also be found in some mares. 25% of mares have canine teeth, which usually appear when the horse is four years old, but may not be fully developed or all four may not be present.

When it comes to fitting your mare for a bit you need to be aware of the possibility of a blind canine that may not be fully developed yet and could be hidden under the skin. This could cause your mare discomfort since the bit may rub the same spot and cause sensitivity.

If you have been experiencing head tossing, rearing, reluctance to move forward, etc. It might be time to make your mare an appointment for a bridle and bit fitting. Message us today to learn more!

Congratulations to CFE-sponsored rider Madi Barnett and Comin' Back on winning the Show Jumper Division at this year's Thoroughbred Makeover!

"I'm really happy with it. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get him to settle down a little bit before the hunters, but I am really happy with him in the jumpers," trainer Madison Barnett said. "Originally I planned to do nine strides down the bending line, and it didn't work out the first round. So, I stuck with the eight strides and that helped everything come up nicely."

Congratulations to Madison Barnett and Comin' Back, winners of the 2024 Show Jumper discipline, sponsored by Excel Equine, at the Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA)!

Comin' Back is currently owned by Mary Crawford. He is a 2018 16 hand gelding by Competitive Edge out of Maydell bred in Kentucky by PTK LLC. Comin' Back last raced Oct. 4, 2022 at Belterra Park. This concluded his 6 starts and one win on the track earning over $16,000. During his last start, he was owned and trained by Adam Gerteisen.

Top Amateur: Golden Image and Allie Silvera
Top Junior: Lemon Taffy and Victoria Hatt
Top Team: Bourbon Creed and Team CSU Equine Sciences
Best Conditioned, with trophy halter presented by KBC Horse Supplies: Carmie's Army and Chya Johnstone

💡 Did you know? 💡

Equine headaches, often due to ill-fitting bridles, can be very painful for horses. Diagnosis can be tricky, but improper bridle fit is usually a common cause.

Consider these factors if your horse seems distressed:

🚩🚩Improper Dental Work: TMJ issues from inadequately floated teeth can cause jaw pain and headaches.

🚩🚩 Trauma to the Poll Area

🚩🚩 Poorly fitted bridles: These can pressure the poll and nuchal ligament, essential for neck support, leading to discomfort.

It’s important to monitor your horse’s bridle fit regularly and note any/all signs of discomfort. If you need help, consider booking a fitting with Samantha to ensure proper bridle and bit fit for your horse’s comfort!

It was a lovely day visiting my friends at Second Nature Farm!

Thoughts and discussions …

Let’s get those noseband and cheek piece buckles in line with the eye. Your horse’s TMJ will thank you.

Let’s get our nosebands a smidge looser and 2 fingers width below the cheekbone. Your horse’s foramen 😁 will be relieved of pressure.

Let’s try other options of nosebands instead of the traditional flash. The flash can slow down the hind end by putting pressure on the sensitive nasal bone.

Let’s throw our French link and large lozenge style bits into the trash. Your horse’s sensitive tongue and palate will thank you… They also make cute toilet paper roll holders 😂

Let’s continue to allow our horses to tell us they aren’t quite comfortable in their bit. And be willing to listen and make small changes.

15/07/2024

CFE will be closed this week 7/15 - 7/19 for much needed time off.

Please email all scheduling and questions to
[email protected]
And we will get back to you on Monday July 22nd.

Awesome weekend up north in New England helping 13 horses feel more comfortable in their bridles and bits!

Takeaways:

If your horse is rubbing their face on their legs after their ride … the bridle is causing pressure points on sensitive nerves.

If your horse is rooting towards the ground and pulls the reins out of your hands … they want tongue relief.

MANY horses have small space in the roof of their mouth … lozenges/middle links MUST be smaller than the width of the hard palate. This is very individualized but easily felt and compared to the length of the lozenge.

Once the horse is ready for the double, the bridoon/snaffle bit should do all the work, NOT the Weymouth. The curb does not give you true vertical flexion.

Curb chains should be replaced with good fitting covers or my favorite Fager leather curb chain which is less bulky and doesn’t allow the chain to twist.

Pelhams, Kimberwicks, 2.5 rings etc must use a leather curb strap!

Check your curb hooks. Make sure they are bent away from the face.

Barn dogs make everything better 😊
