You need to be working fetch everyday even if you can only squeeze in 5 minutes. It’s a great energy outlet for the pup and your consistency will pay off.
15 Week Check-in
We’ve been away for a couple of weeks and have not been able to add new elements of training until today. Having normal elements of training woven through the fabric of your busy days will get you through those periods. But today we did some work. She’s a quick learner and her focus is good… when she’s not being a puppy.
Double training. I’m not sure which one is harder to train but they’re both getting the hang of it.
Retrieving is in the blood.
Off leash work.
Whether you plan to run your dog in the field or not, it must behave well off leash. Here’s a bit of foundation work. The goal is simply for the pup to stay with me.
Kennel Training
Dogs are 12 weeks now. They should know how to go into their kennel on command. They should also be capable of 6-7 hours through the night without messing in the kennel. Here’s just a little video showing how we got there.
Having an old dog to help reinforce good training is incredibly helpful. Watch as Mags helps set an example for Blue. Blue is learning to only leave her seat when her name is called. Needless to say, the success gets me excited.
Stay Training
When the dog has a good understanding of "sit," you can move to "stay." Be sure to reward the dog only if she stays, not if she got close to staying. When the dog fails and breaks, take her back to the spot she failed and make her sit again.
Sit Reinforcement
As soon as the dog knows the command, begin to reinforce the command with no food. The quicker you can get away from food as an incentive, the better. The goal is obviously to have a well-behaved dog that obeys without you having to carry food in your pockets.
Sit Training
I will try to post some short training videos as we work our Blue girl into shape. It's amazing how much these dogs can learn at an young age. The last of her litter mates went home at 9 weeks, so that's when we were able to dedicate some time to train. None of us probably have as much time as we'd like to work our dogs, but don't let that be an excuse. If all you do is train at meal time for 5-10 minutes, you'd be surprised what you could accomplish.
There’re big plans for this little girl!
This little girl got a new collar. We started basic sit, kennel, and lead training. Her instinctual retrieving is clearly present. She still needs a good home. I’ve had several inquiries, but none of them followed up, so she’s still available.
Now that we’re down to one puppy left I get to spend some more dedicated time with her. Last night she did several retrieves back to back like she was bred for it. This is the little girl we have unreserved.
2nd Vet visit today! Waiting on sister to get her shots and microchip.
This last week saw another transition from cuddling, sleeping pups to playful pups. They are on soft food and almost weaned. Just two more weeks until they are ready to go home.
Play time is now an event, and the pups have been introduced to solid food.
I love watching them discover what this thing is called water.
We have some more serious play starting to happen now, and a couple of puppies have figured out how to get out of the pool. Now is about the time when they begin to be a lot of fun.
