๐Ÿ“Œ Along with their noses, their hearing is super sensitive

๐Ÿ‘‰ We all know dogs can hear much higher frequencies than us, but did you know they can also hear further? Generally, dogs can hear much softer sounds than we can, so they can hear things that are much further away.

๐Ÿ‘‰ This is another trait that makes them great search and rescue dogs. While they will mainly use their nose for tracking, their hearing can also be a real help (especially as they get closer to whatever they are looking for!).

๐Ÿ‘‰ Dogs like K9 Killer (pictured above), who was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal for helping to track down Rhino poachers, are excellent at tracking using both smell and hearing.

๐Ÿ“Œ Why should I walk my dog every day?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Walking with your dog strengthens the bond between you and your pet, and it is also the healthy thing to do. Dogs, like people, benefit from exercise to help control weight and to maintain a healthy heart, lungs, and muscles. They love going for a walk, running and jumping, and retrieving a ball or other object. Aging pets must be kept as agile and fit as possible, but they may not be motivated to exercise without encouragement.

๐Ÿ“Œ Why the Chow Chow Is an Unusual Dog Breed

๐Ÿ‘‰ He's reserved with strangers, but will accept them if properly introduced by his owner. Chow Chow are fastidious (again, like a cat) and extremely clean. They are easily house-trained and have very little doggy odor if brushed often.

๐Ÿ“Œ How much does the microbiome REALLY contribute to animal health and wellness?

๐Ÿ‘‰ In a preliminary study with working dog vs general dog breeds, the presence of Lactobacillus spp., acetate and butyrate-producing bacteria associated with increased cowardice scores, while increased motivation scores were positively associated with Prevotella spp.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Increased sociability scores were associated with Lachnospiraceae and Bacteroides. Also, high aggression scores were positively associated with increased abundance of Balutia, Bradyrhizobium and Rhuminococcaceae.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Also interesting, high obedience scores were associated with low Clostridium perfringens abundance.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The type of care you need to provide your dog throughout his life will vary during different life stages. Young dogs are active and usually require more exercise than older ones.

๐Ÿ“Œ Why donโ€™t dogs get hoarse when they bark a lot?

๐Ÿ‘‰ It seems like some dogs can bark and bark for hours. Yet they never seem to get hoarse or lose their voice (bark) like people do when they talk, yell, or sing too much.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Veterinarians think that is because a dogโ€™s voice box, or larynx, is not as complicated as the larynx of a human, who needs to make a wide range of different sounds to speak.

๐Ÿ‘‰ So the stress that results from excessive barking doesnโ€™t do nearly as much damage as overusing a human voice does.

02/01/2023

๐Ÿ“Œ Like barking, growling, and whining, howling is one of the few forms of verbal communication that dogs have. Its roots go back to dogsโ€™ wolf ancestry, when wild wolves used howling to communicate over long distances.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The howl swept through different pitches, which helped the sound carry over longer distances. Wolves use howling to let other pack members know their precise location if they happen to get separated.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Other members of the pack howl back in replyโ€”an acknowledgement that the sent message has been received. Wolves also howl to discourage a rival pack from encroaching on their territory.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Dogs today still display some of this behavior. If you leave your home, your dog may howl to try to reestablish contact with you. If the howling persists after youโ€™ve left, it could be a sign of separation anxiety. And sometimes dogs howl to establish their territory.

21/12/2022

๐Ÿ“Œ Why does my dog wag its tail when itโ€™s happy to see me?

๐Ÿ‘‰ A dog uses its tail wagging, facial expressions, ear position, posture, and vocalization to communicate. Puppies start wagging their tails when they are about six or seven weeks old, as they begin to interact with their fellow littermates and humans.

๐Ÿ‘‰ At this time, puppies begin using their tails as a means of communication and social interaction. Animal specialists believe that tail wagging is in the dogโ€™s genes: since wolves (the ancestors of todayโ€™s domesticated dogs,) ran in packs, communicationโ€”whether by barking, growling, or wagging tailsโ€”was essential to survival.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Researchers agree that a dog with a loosely wagging tail is usually โ€œsayingโ€ that he is friendly or excited. However, a wagging tail is not always a sign of friendliness: an aggressive dog might hold its tail high and wag only the tip, while a submissive or scared dog is more likely to hold its tail low and wag it stiffly.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Look for these clues in your own dog. If you ever approach anyone elseโ€™s, ask the owner for permission to pet the animal before making contact.
