The e-collar is an amazingly sophisticated tool that allows for clearer and more effective communication. You can and should *teach* recall using positive reinforcement, but that one component alone is not enough to ensure safety and reliability for the VAST majority of dogs. The first session, I always teach dogs to walk on a loose leash without pulling. The loose leash walking allows us to start establishing a relationship and communication. It's such a basic, yet essential, behaviour that so much else is connected to, believe it or not! While on the loose leash, we also practise recall. Later on, I teach them to heel. They don't have to heel all the time, but it is a great skill for them to have, and it provides them with a task/job to focus on. It's really not safe when a dog is constantly pulling and only the leash is keeping them under control! I didn't tell them which way to go, so Valerian chose the more open path. But then I realised that I had to take the lefthand trail, so I called them in that direction instead. Then I gave them a quick break to run around before continuing. When we first get on the bike, they are very excited and will immediately start running if I let them. But I think it's important to have control, too, especially if you want to take your dog(s) different places on the bike. In my experience, their default response is to pull and run. A car was indeed coming, so I just had them stop and wait for it to pass before continuing. Don't count out the chibi husky and Huffy mountain bike from the 90s, though! :U I had wanted to register for the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club race in the Pine Barrens this weekend, but it's a good thing I didn't, because I've been sick all week and would have been super disappointed in not going. Quick training session I had recorded with Kimi practising around another dog. Teddy ran over to us when Bill told him "Break" because I'm normally the one handling him and he wanted to be with me. Kimi and Teddy had played together elsewhere before, and I knew they were fine interacting, so there was no risk if either one made a mistake.
