Meet Harry!! Harry is a white Naked Neck Rooster, also known as a Turken. Harry's story began September 9, 2018, when our family brought him and his 3 "siblings" home. Harry was a normal chicken, who loved attention. Like many "late in the season" chicken purchases, we rushed to acclimate Harry to being outside before the weather turned horrible. In true Central Pennsylvania fashion, that time ran short. On Christmas Eve of last year, we placed Harry with his siblings outside with the rest of our flock in hopes of having him adjust to the weather in time. The following week, during a harsh cold snap, Harry's siblings perished from the cold weather. Harry was the lone survivor of his brood. Harry seemed to be beating the odds of the winter, when another cold snap on Valentine's day caught us all off guard and trapped Harry in a frozen water puddle on the property causing sever frostbite. Our goats alerted my husband to his situation and we brought him inside to slowly begin the warm up process. After turning to the internet for advice, we were confronted with the reality of chicken keeping. Many chicken owners believed that having Harry for dinner would be the most humane thing to do. I was even told that I should be "hit in the head with a shovel if I didn't put him out of his misery". This was not an option for us, as my 1 year old daughter had already bonded to this handsome bird. After many trips to the vet, tissue removal, bone removal, pain meds, and patience, Harry is a happy healthy 1 year old. We have built him his own coop with a smaller run, and given him 4 bantam girls to keep him company. Now- the problem!! There are no prosthetic feet for roosters in Harry's condition. He does not have any tissue left on the soles of his feet so cushioning is essential, but the more we wrap, the more we suffocate his foot from air. Chickens give off extra heat through their feet and Harry is unable to do that so he has the human equivalent to Trench Foot. We need help!! We will try anything!! Please help us spread Harry's story.
