November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month.

Dogs and Cats can get diabetes just like Humans, and like humans, it can be due to a lack of Insulin, a hormone created by the pancreas to break down sugars.

The main symptoms of Diabetes in Cats and Dogs are:
Excessive Urination & Excessive Thirst
Excessive Appetite & Unexplained Weight Loss

Your Veterinarian can help by running screening blood work to check their current blood sugar and kidney and liver values to rule out other diseases.

Diabetics require injections of insulin every 12 hours with set meal times and sometimes a prescription diet to keep their blood sugar within normal limits.

If you are concerned your pet may have Diabetes symptoms, give your Veterinarian a call to schedule screening bloodwork & get them up to date on their physical.

Pets with arthritis can still benefit from low impact exercise like regular walking to help keep their muscles active and strong.

When pain causes pets to stop moving, they begin to loose muscle mass, which can lead to increased joint pain, creating a vicious cycle. Walking, Swimming or even some basic exercises like Sit & Stand, can help you pet have strong muscles.

Our friends @ Zoetis Petcare have some great videos to help you learn some easy exercises for our older pets.

Did you know, dogs and cats typically don't age 7 years per 1 Human year.

Previously dogs and cats were considered senior at 7 years old, now a pets' breed or overall size can make them younger or older than previously thought. Large breed and giant breed dogs are considered senior after 5 to 6 years of age and cats are now considered a senior at 11 years.

With this new aging guide, Veterinarians are recommending more routine exams and check ups for the senior pets, which can help catch diseases earlier and allow our pets to have a longer and healthier life.

Senior pet diseases can range from Dental disease, kidney and liver disease, heart disease, cancer and even arthritis. Many of these diseases, when caught early can be managed to slow the progression of the ailment.

By seeing your pet more frequently your Veterinarian can make custom care recommendations to keep your pet feeling there best through their golden years.
