Meet Charlie! Charlie is a 3-4 year old rescue mix breed dog who has been working with Dylan for the past year.
Charlie was reactive and difficult to manage on lead around other dogs before beginning our training.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work from Charlie’s guardians Anna & Harry whom have being awesome every step of the way, she has responded fantastically to training!

Although Charlie and her parents have the skills to walk together well now, they acknowledge that maintenance for the training is important , so they catch up with Dylan still for some walk and trains.

Working with reactive dogs takes maintenance of those skills, it’s like strength or fitness training- once you have achieved your goal there is still a need to workout or you will eventually loose your strength/fitness!
We are so proud of Charlie and her family!

Meet Milly! Milly is a adorable adolescent dog who is working with Dylan on her walking manners. Dylan gives Milly a chance to sniff before they start training as she is very distracted by smells during their sessions. Once Milly is given the opportunity to have a sniff she is better able to focus and respond to training!

We are so devastated to see so many rescues/shelters/pounds struggling. This is just one post out of many that has caught my attention whilst scrolling Facebook recently.
Please please consider ADOPTION if you would like to add to your family, or please consider FOSTERING. If you cannot do either maybe your in a position to DONATE to a rescue or shelter, if not just SPEAD the word.
Most rescues are not able to take on any more animals at the moment and it is heartbreaking 💔
If you would like support to adopt or foster please reach out to us and we will help you.

We are thinking up ideas on how to best support homeless animals, so stay turned! And if you have any suggestions on what we could do to help you adopt and keep an animal please comment below!

These are just a few of the dogs that face death at ONE pound this week.

All young. All social. All happy. Surely they deserve a chance. They’re in there for all sorts of reasons: owner moving, owner died, too many dogs on the property, can’t work sheep, owner doesn’t have time, new baby in the house etc etc

Unfortunately rescue is at crisis point. No available foster carers and adoption applications are almost at a standstill.

Without foster carers to take on these dogs, there is only one option left for them; they will be killed. Pounds are overflowing with nowhere to place the constant stream of dogs arriving at their doorstep. Not to mention the dire situation for cats and kittens…

If you have ever considered fostering, APPLY! If you want a new dog, ADOPT!

Displacement behaviours are normal behaviours displayed out of context. They can suggest that your dog is conflicted, unsure or anxious in a given situation. A few common displacement behaviour we see that people frequently misinterpret are- hu***ng, mouthing, hyper-activity including zoomies, picking up toys and walking around with them and/or shaking them.. They are a “fidget” behaviour from the 5F behaviours (fight, flight, faint, fidget and freeze). You need to watch closely for these behaviours as they can be subtle and when you pick up on them help your dog move away from the situation and feel free to discuss with us how to support your dog to cope better! Human examples of displacement behaviours are chewing on a pen, fiddling with rings, scratching your head.

If there is one thing that we really want people to learn about it’s dog body language. We provide these posters from VBT in our puppy schools as well as in every initial behaviour plan that we do. Dogs communicate predominately through body language and it’s so important that we understand body language for several reasons:
1. We need to learn dog body language to be able to recognize what they are communicating to us
2. Using hand signals to train is really important (I know as humans we like to talk, but verbal cues just aren’t as salient for dogs, not to say we can’t use them but keep this in mind)
3. Dogs are very good at learning about us through our body language
4. We can remove our dogs from situations that are causing them stress if
we are able to recognize signs of stress- always be an advocate for your dog! It can also keep your dog, your self and other people safe.

* Behaviour is always context related, for example; if a dog yawns when they are in their bed and going to sleep, that may not be a stress sign however if they are in the waiting room of a vet clinic or being handled by a vet and yawn this could indicate that they are stressed- we need to look at what’s going on in the environment as well as what the rest of the dog’s behaviour/body language is saying

Dogs can be conditioned to like a tummy rub but that’s not what this behaviour was communicating originally! So we would caution against rubbing that tummy, especially if they are not your dog.
