Keep your Havanese looking fabulous!

Brushing isn’t quite enough for these royal dogs. Regular combing, reaching down to the skin, keeps their coat free of mats and their skin healthy.

A simple metal comb is just the thing. ;)

With mixed feelings, we announce that we’re taking a break from producing Havanese puppies. So, darling Zinn is our last puppy until who knows when.

Lizzie is retired now and we have yet to find a breeding prospect female puppy that meets our criteria.

Until and if that time comes, we’re living a happy life with our precious Shiloh and Lizzie on the ranch. And we are always here to support our wonderful Highland Glenn Havanese families!

Krystal being co-founder of the Natural Rearing Breeder Connection is very involved in the breeding community and promotion of Natural Rearing. She also continues to offer consultations through her small animal naturopathy practice, Radiant Animal Wellness.

Puppies go through a few “fear periods”. It’s part of gaining confidence and growing up.

Fear periods can last a few hours or a couple of days. We might not notice that a puppy is in one, but perhaps a littermate is, so we can safely assume the other pups are too.

It’s vitaly during those periods to never let a puppy become truly frightened! So when we notice that a puppy is in a fear period, we dial things down a bit. This allows their developing brains to process things.

Before we know it, that fear period is past and the puppies are back to business as usual!

Giving your dog a raw meat diet is actually quite helpful in summer. How so?

Raw meat contains a goodly amount of water, as any home cook knows. A raw fed dog consumes 80% of its daily water needs from the raw meat alone! Many new to raw feeding are amazed to see their dog drinking less water. Of course, fresh water needs to be available to your dog at all times.

A raw diet is just one more way to make sure your canine friends stay hydrated during the dog days of summer!

A dogs’ need for water normally increases in the heat of summer. Make sure your dog has access to fresh water at all times. This is a given at any time of year, but especially in warm temperatures. A pool of some sort is often appreciated by the water-loving dog, to splash or lay belly down in to cool off!

Shade is mandatory when spending time outside. The deep shade of large trees or even your house is wonderful because the ground remains cool. A dog will often scratch up a little depression in the soil as a cool resting spot.

Feet need extra consideration in summer. Concrete and especially asphalt get blistering hot! The rule of thumb goes that if the surface is too hot to hold the back of your hand on for any longer than a few seconds, it is much too hot for your dog’s sensitive paws. Serious injury can occur. There are dog boots available to protect your dog’s paws in summer or winter.

Insects are a blight in summer for our canine companions, too - fleas, ticks, mosquitos to name a few. There are many non-toxic things to use. Baltic amber collars and therapeutic-grade pure essential oils are very effective. The oils we like are geranium, lemongrass, citronella, lavender, and cedarwood. They smell wonderful and are safe for you and your pets!

With just a little thought and small adjustments, you can protect your Havanese.

The Avidog™ team collectively has over 50 years of breeding, training, and competing with dogs under their belts. They developed an amazing science-based early-puppyhood learning tool called an Adventure Box.

What exactly is an Adventure Box? Technically speaking it’s a square frame from which puppy-safe items with different textures and colors are strung. Things like lengths of hose, un-used paint cans, plastic funnels, utensils, etc.

Why use an Adventure Box? From about 3 ½ to 16 weeks of age is generally referred to as the “sensitive period”. Puppy’s brain is growing incredibly fast! The breeder has the puppy for most of this period, so the things they do or don’t do greatly influence the kind of dog the puppy will become. The new owner then carries on with the puppy until 16 weeks old.

During this period in particular puppies are gaining confidence as they experience the sometimes scary new things in the big world around them. While they are with their mother and siblings they are less afraid so gain confidence and mental/emotional stability by leaps and bounds.

The Adventure Box is a fun-for-them (and us!) way to introduce them to new things along the lines of touch and motion. As the puppies move in and out of the Adventure Box, eating or playing, the Avidog™ breeders found it helps develop stability in their pups, growing the size and complexity of their brains, helping them become more confident for life and develop problem-solving skills.

Zinn sure likes it!

The Havanese originating in the hot climate of Cuba, can handle heat better than most. Their double coat actually offers protection from the sun. However, it’s still a coat he can’t take off, so be careful and cautious.

Having your Havanese in a super short or shaved coat for summer does not help him, it actually means he has less protection from the sun's intense heat.

For exercise and other outdoor activities, try to do these in the cooler parts of the day, like morning or evening. On those wicked hot days, it’s better for both of you to just lay low and keep as cool as possible!

Make sure to provide a shady spot to help your dog cool down, take frequent breaks, have plenty of water, and watch them carefully for signs of heat stress/stroke.

This heat wave has us in survival mode so naturally our minds go to sharing how others can keep their dogs safe in summer.

Dogs need plenty of water when it’s hot out! But, excessive water consumption can cause the body’s electrolytes to get out of balance. There are a few things to prevent this.

First, add a bit of sea salt to your dog’s water or food. Second, make an electrolyte solution using 2 Tbsp. raw honey, ¼ tsp sea salt, ¼ tsp baking soda; dissolve into 1 quart of water. Give a dose daily. Or for convenience, use an unflavored electrolyte solution from the store.

Have fun and be safe!

Going along with last week’s post about keeping your dog safe in summer, let’s talk a little about heatstroke.

A dog’s normal body temperature is somewhere between 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

A dog will start to experience heatstroke at over 105F. At around 106F to 108F, organ damage can occur. Always keep a re**al thermometer handy to check your dog’s temperature if you suspect heatstroke.

Here are some signs to be on the lookout for:
• Excessive panting
• Excessive thirst
• Glazed eyes
• Hyperventilation
• Increased salivation
• Dry gums that are pale or grayish
• Bright or dark red tongue or gums
• Rapid or erratic pulse
• Weakness
• Staggering
• Seizures
• Confusion
• Inattention
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Collapse

Summer adventures are afoot and traveling with your sweet Havanese is fun!

There are simple precautions to take to protect your precious dogs while they accompany you. The main one is to never leave Charlie or Poppy in the car, not even while you do errands!

Canine sweat glands are found only on their nose and foot pads. Dogs regulate their body temperature primarily by panting, which, truth be told, isn't terribly efficient!

Thus, in a relatively short period, an overheated dog can suffer severe, irreversible damage to the brain, heart, liver, and nervous system.

The temperature in a closed vehicle, even with the windows cracked, can reach dangerous levels in no time flat. Take a look:

Vehicle Temp Inside
Outside Temp 10 min. 30 min.
75 94 109
80 99 114
85 104 119
90 109 124
95 114 129

Frightening.

Please, do not leave your dog in a vehicle! In many states, it’s actually illegal. Unless you can take your dog inside the store with you it is better he remain safely at home.

Have a safe and pleasant summer!

The Havanese has a royal history in Britain as well as Cuba. 👑

As early as 1700, Queen Anne appears to be the earliest royal owner of note. After seeing a troupe of them perform at Court, she obtained two for herself. Then in the 1800’s, Queen Victoria, an avid animal lover, acquired two directly from Cuba.

Havanese were also popular among Britain’s literati. 📕 Charles Dickens had one named Timmy of whom he wrote about. The philosopher Thomas Carlyle also wrote about his dog Nero, who lies buried in his garden to this day.

The critical socialization period for a puppy is 3 to 12 weeks of age.

Most people think of “socialization” as exposing their puppy to as many new people and experiences as possible while still young. Although this is part of the process, it’s not enough.

Our goal as breeders is to raise dogs that have the emotional intelligence to connect with humans. Emotional intelligence can be taught to very young puppies and one of the goals of Puppy Culture is to teach breeders how to do this.

Our puppies go home with their families at 10 weeks old. This gives them two weeks still in that critical socialization period to adjust to their new family’s lifestyle and be safely introduced to new people and experiences.

The use of any puppy raising program does not guarantee a perfect adult. There is no such thing as a perfect dog anyway! However, the benefits are obvious to those sharing life with a dog raised with one like Puppy Culture.

Speaking of recall, look at those little legs fly to me! 💜

Recall is incredibly important for a dog to learn. It can mean their life! Thanks to Puppy Culture protocols, we are all to instill strong recall from a very young age.

Does this mean that our puppy’s recall is 100%? No. And sometimes there are fascinating scents that really capture a youngster’s attention, but they are much more reliable than if recall is started at an older age.

At each mealtime (four times per day) we use our special puppy call for Zinn. He gets so excited when he hears my sing-song "puppy, puppy, puppy!" knowing something wonderful is coming! 🥰

And this puppy call translates into him developing a good recall already. ✅

24/06/2024

Look at precious little Zinn. His personality is absolutely charming!

He is 7 weeks old now and doing well as we go along with the Puppy Culture protocols.

This spice shelf is steps for him to play on. It’s his new item for the day.

Amazing how such a simple little thing can bring such happiness to a puppy!

Our Story

On our off-grid Ranch in the remote mountains of northeastern Washington State, our passion is breed conservation of heritage livestock like Shetland Sheep, Alpine dairy goats, rabbits, and laying hens. Since 2012 we have also bred our working partners the English Shepherd.

Chronic health issues made us want a small companion dog. After much research, the delightful Havanese won hands down. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Why the Havanese? Our lifestyle is rugged so a delicate dog was not an option. The Havanese are quite sturdy and ready for adventure! They are very healthy and long-lived, smart, loving, and cuddly with their humans and friendly with strangers, alert to their environment, playful, and silly. They are very interactive and make us laugh every day! And of course, their beauty!

Dogs are first and foremost beloved family companions to share cuddles and adventures with. We are not currently able to show our dogs but respect those that do.
