Maritime Animal Response Team is a group of dedicated volunteers trained as animal search and rescue technicians through the MARN (Missing Animal Response Network) organization. Our mission is to reunite lost pets with their families by providing tools and teaching techniques that use the animals' natural instincts to bring the animal home without fear or harm to themselves, wildlife or nature. MA

RT offers the unique skill set of having our own K9 tracking dog, along with live traps and cameras when needed. With boots on the ground we are dedicated to helping families reunite with their lost family members.

EXCITING PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT!

I’m sure it would come as no surprise that when we are trying to find people’s lost animals, we come across a lot of other animals who need help. In some cases, we have a fairly steady stream of extra animals with each case; we were talking about one today that has resulted in an additional 16 cats being rescued!

Most cities and towns have a place where stray cats can go but when it comes to rural areas, there isn’t a set-in-stone place that will take these animals on, and with shelters struggling to keep up with the ever-growing population of animals needing their help, we’ve had more than one incident where we weren’t sure what to do with an animal.

But now, in partnership with the Oromocto SPCA and Paw & Order, MART is excited to announce a bit of a side gig, called MART SVU (the Stray Victims Unit.) The 3 organizations collaborated to raise some funds to specifically set aside to care for these stray victims and you will continue to see events throughout the year to not only continue to fund this effort but also to raise awareness about how to help prevent more pets from becoming lost, since strays are sometimes the result of pets being lost. This division will focus primarily on cats, because dogs are protected by the NBSPCA, but may include other small animals where necessary. We will endeavour to share stories with you of some of the animals that benefit from this partnership.

This doesn’t change anything about MART’s primary mission. Our main task will still be reuniting lost animals with their families. This will simply allow us to help some other animals find families along the way.

In the final month of the year, we were able to assist 8 dogs, 9 cats and 1 bunny to get to safety and warmth whether in their home or with a rescue if they had no home.

Please watch our page for our annual summary and an exciting partnership announcement in the coming days!

Imagine the sky suddenly exploding unexpectedly. How would you react? Run? Hide? Cry? Do whatever you can to get away from it?

That’s what fireworks are like for your pets. Do them a favour and don’t take them to fireworks. Not on NYE or ever. Better yet, don’t do fireworks.

Shout out to all the animal rescues, animal caretakers, pet boarding facilities, veterinarians, vet techs and assistants who are spending some portion of their day feeding animals, cleaning up p**p, walking dogs and otherwise giving their love to animals while most of the world is sitting in pyjamas and drinking cocoa with their families on Christmas Day. We see you and we appreciate you!

The MART team would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy holiday season and remind you that in the midst of all the hustle and bustle there are some things you can do to keep your furry family members safe.

The activity can be scary for them. If people are coming and going frequently or you have guests over, give them a quiet place to go and something to do. Crate your dogs if they are a flight risk or nervous. Exercise them ahead of visitors so they’re tired. Don’t let them be at or near the door when you answer it!

If you’re travelling, keep animals in crates in your vehicle or at the very least, for dogs, tethered in the car. Leash them before opening any doors and for cats, just don’t let them out until you’re inside. Label the crate with the words “in the event of an emergency, DO NOT OPEN” and put an emergency contact number.

Remember, while the festivities might be fun for you, they aren’t necessarily fun for your pets. So keep them safe, enjoy your family and friends without them and if all else fails, you know where to find us!

Update - he’s been found safe! He was checking out someone’s garage and got stuck in there. And the fence has been fixed! :)

This guy got away with his brother yesterday when their fence blew down. They were seen several times and his brother since has returned home but he’s still out there. He’s been seen most recently near the Westmorland street bridge. Although he’s friendly , we are asking people NOT TO CHASE OR CALL OUT TO HIM! Because he’s been chased a few times already, and because he’s in a high traffic area, he may bolt and that can be incredibly dangerous! Please just call the number if you see him.

Heads up! Are you coming to see us at Paw & Order this weekend? The Mactaquac Dam will be closed on Saturday, according to 511. But not to worry! We’ve mapped it out and for most people, it only adds a small amount of time to your travel!

Coming from New Maryland or Oromocto? Cross the bridge at Westmorland St. It will take you 2-3 minutes extra to get there.

Woodstock? Cross in Nackawic and you’ll be 2 minutes extra.

Hanwell? It’s only 2 more minutes to cross at Westmorland street.

Harvey/ Upper Kingsclear? I’m sorry it’s an extra 25 minutes but I promise you it’s worth the drive!

Downtown Fredericton or Fredericton north? It’s always been shorter to take the north side route through Douglas!

In September of 2023, McLovin didn’t come home after a bad storm. His family posted about him but to no avail and they feared the worst. Fast forward a year and Glenda, a cat lover who had volunteered with Car-MA in the past, started noticing a long haired grey cat in her yard. She started feeding him, even built a shelter for him, and although he wouldn’t come near her, she managed to get some pictures to post online. Someone tagged his family and they were sure it was McLovin! We happened to see the post and reached out to Glenda to see if we could help in any way.

We got a trap and camera to her and together we plotted how to trap him but she did all the hard work. We had a near trap at one point which set us back because he was on to us. But Glenda didn’t give up. She continued to try to earn his trust and last week we felt he might finally be ready to trap again. And this time it was a success!

McLovin is now back home with his family, decompressing, resting and staying inside. He’ll need a vet visit for fleas, ticks, worms and a quick check up but appears to be in good health otherwise. He’ll also visit a groomer eventually because his fur is so matted from his time outdoors.

This is the good news story we all need right now! If your pet is missing, don’t give up! And if your faith in humanity is waning, think of this and know there are still good people out there!

October set a record and I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. 34 animals reunited with their families or brought in from the cold in October. That’s more than one for each day of the month. Read that again.

17 cats and 4 dogs were reunited with their families. In the process of doing that, we rescued 13 strays, many of them kittens.

There are only 8 of us on this team (honestly 9 but one won’t admit she’s on our team yet!). We also have volunteers out there who help with posters, fundraising, trapping, temporarily housing strays and sitting watch so I want to send a special thank you to them. We’d be out of our minds without you!

We also have rescue partners who help us every day; we see you. Thank you. ❤️

I don’t normally make this plea but after this number, here it is: if you can keep your cat in, please do. If you’re adopting a new animal, learn about decompression. Don’t let kids hold the leash. Get a fence or tie your dog. Spay and neuter your pets. Get them microchipped, put an ID collar on them or get a gps tracker. Please stop dumping animals to fend for themselves.

We know things happen and we’re here to help if they do.

As cute as these guys are, lots of dogs and cats aren’t fans of Hallowe’en! The barking excitedly and wagging tail don’t always mean they want to meet the scary monster on the other side of that ringing doorbell. In fact, it likely means the opposite!

Do yourselves and your animal family members a favour and take care of their emotional well-being around this holiday. Extra noises outside, ringing doorbells, people coming and going - it’s a lot for them. Some things you can do to help them:

1. Exercise them before it all starts. Get in a good walk so they’re tired and not amped up.
2. Give them a quiet place to be where they feel safe like another room or a kennel.
3. Distract them with something to occupy their minds like a Kong stuffed with yummy goodness or a favorite toy.
4. Don’t let them answer the door! Don’t even let them be near the door! (That’s how they get out!)
5. Be patient with them. Don’t get upset if they’re upset. They don’t understand this weird holiday or why the doorbell keeps ringing or why so many strangers are around.
6. Keep them away from candy. It can make them really sick.

We’d like to take a moment to thank Lesley Thomas, one of the founding members of MART, for her time and dedication to the cause of reuniting lost animals with their families. She has spent years honing her skill and reunited dozens, if not hundreds of animals with their families. Lesley has made the difficult decision to leave the MART team to pursue other passions and while we are sad to see her go, we wish her a world of success with her newest work and any future endeavours. We know this is not goodbye because when you love animals your path continually crosses with like-hearted people. And of course the door is always open if she someday wishes to return or assist with any cases. You’ll be able to find Lesley growing her latest passion, Alert K9. www.alertk9scentdetection.com.

Please join us in wishing her well! It won’t be the same without you, Lesley!
