Just wanted to give a little update of us here at Southern Oak.. we are sadden to say that we lost our beautiful boy Copper a few weeks ago. He had unfortunately ate something he shouldn’t have and by the time we caught it and made it to the ER vet, it was already too late. Devastated is an understatement.. 💔 He is the father to most of all of our puppies and it makes our hearts so happy to see all of his babies keeping his Legacy alive! As of now, we are unsure when we will have another litter. It will be another year or so. Below is some pictures of our sweet Copper. For those that have gotten one of his puppies from us, we would love if you all could share pictures of them below 🥹 Thank you. ❤️

We’ve been super busy lately so we haven’t been keeping up with the dates and honestly this year is FLYING! 😅
But we want to wish a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our 8/7/22 litter!! 🥰

Pictured is Zeus at his BIRTHDAY PARTY 😍😍 How freaking cute is that?! He even had a dog birthday cake and doggie friends come! 💙🐾

This is why we do what we do. I absolutely LOVE watching our families enjoy their babies & spoil them 🥰

As the weather warms up you might be tempted to shave or clip down your Australian Shepherd to keep them cool.

STEP AWAY FROM THE CLIPPERS!

Science has proven that double coated (guard or top coat and undercoat which is fluffy and soft) breeds should not be clipped down but should instead be kept throughly brushed to remove the dead undercoat. The undercoat is vital in keeping your Australian Shepherd warm in the winter AND cool in the summer. If you shave them, they’re unable to regulate their heat naturally which makes them more susceptible to heat stroke and sunburn to the skin.

Instead, grab a regular metal comb and “line comb” the dog to remove dead undercoat. Go slowly.. line by line down to the skin. This will help your dog keep itself cooler and reduce shedding in your home!

Know the breed before you get an Australian Shepherd!!!

If you have ever wondered why it is or was hard to train your Aussie not to nip and why many Aussies don’t have tails these pictures tell the story. They are bred to herd anything from ducks and sheep to large angry cows and bison. They do it with stealth and well timed nips. Not all large livestock are friendly participants.... some are like the customer or client from hell. Some Aussies are born with naturally bobbed tails which comes in handy when trying to prevent painful or catastrophic tail injuries like degloving, paralysis and death. Through early attempts to breed in the naturally bobbed tails the results where also breeding in serious spinal defects making docking the only safe way to prevent tail injures. This isn’t a debate on right or wrong it’s just information on how it became breed standard.

Fun Fact: There is nothing Australian about the Australian Shepherd.... they are American bred 😉

Some of the best dogs are black tris. A blue merle COULD be pretty but have a bad temperament. Don’t over look the black tri. Don’t buy a dog only because of the looks but look for temperament, structure, genetics, a good responsible breeder and much more.

To clarify, this post is not to put down blue merles. I’m simply stating as a breeder blue merles are usually first to go and black tris are left behind. This post is to encourage buying a dog based on multiple factors not just color. The color of a dog doesn’t mean it will have good temperament or what not. You can pick a dog based on color but there’s no promise it will have good temperament, etc. Also, don’t buy cheap dogs just because they are cheap.

It’s National Puppy Day… and we currently have puppies being born from Daisy & Copper! 🥹

Stay tuned for pictures in another week ❤️
