I’ve given a lot of thought to how to make sure my puppies and toddlers get along over the years, and these tips are the ones that I refer back to most frequently!
1. Use an exercise pen. I love using an exercise pen with my puppies anyway, but when you add a toddler to the mix (yours, a grand baby, or a friend) an exercise pen becomes essential. I set the pen up with a kennel, food and water and some choice toys. My toddlers have always been happy to sit on the floor and play with the puppy through the pen walls. But if the toddler, or puppy, gets to rough either party can disengage. I’ve found this to be really key to making sure that neither the puppy or the toddler gets overwhelmed with the other one!
2. Do not - DO NOT let your toddler play with the puppy’s food or bones. In an ideal world you teach your puppy to never recourse guard. But will your toddler only ever interact with YOUR dog? It’s unlikely. Guarding food is instinctual behavior for the dog. To ensure everyone’s safety teach your toddler to respect the puppy’s food and bones. If the toddler won’t leave the puppy alone while he/she eats, feed the puppy in his/her kennel in the afore mentioned exercise pen.
3. Teach your puppy to not mop on your toddler. Imagine you are as tall as your toddler and a dog comes tearing across the floor and plants his two front paws on your shoulders knocking you to the ground - would you be scared?! I bet you would be! Teach your puppy to sit for attention instead of jumping. Whenever your puppy jumps withhold affection, gently (or firmly depending on how determined the puppy is!) place the puppy in a sit position and then pet the puppy. They will learn very quickly that if they want attention they should sit down! This behavior typically doesn’t take more than a week to teach (if you’re consistent!).
Bonus: Have Fun! Your toddler and puppy are watching you to see how they should react to all of the new experiences. Reassure them with a smile

Standard poodles make wonderful family pets. They don’t shed, are about as hypoallergenic as a dog can be, are incredibly intelligent, are easy to train, and are wonderful with kids.
Our standard poodles are raised in our family, which includes young kids! The puppies are vet checked when they’re eight weeks old to make sure they are healthy and ready to join their forever families.

Copper is the daddy to our beautiful litters of dark red standard poodle puppies. He is a big boy, weighing in around 65 pounds. But he is a gentle giant, always wanting to be as close to us as possible.
Copper’s puppies all seem to get his perceptive eyes, and dark red coat. Because Copper is genetically clear I know none of his puppies will be affected by any of the things that we can test for!
In my experience, standard poodle males are shadow dogs. Always following us around, putting their heads in our lap, and watching us carefully to know if we are happy or sad. They’re also very very good with our kids. 💙💙💙

What makes a great puppy? Good parents, lots of hugs and kisses, time, energy and maybe little girls playing dress up with them doesn't hurt either! Our pups definitly go home loved and cared for! This is Oreo - the Standard Poodle who started it all for me. Truly I picked a standard poodle because I was sick of shedding. I wanted a dog who didn’t leave hair everywhere he went.
