We didn’t even get a chance to know him. ..

“Whip” our tailless whip scorpion made it through the cold and delays with Molly The Mantis. Except we woke up today to find him deceased.

He would have grown 100 times bigger and we were excited to have him as an addition to the family.

We hope to order a new one soon.

This is Molly. She is a dead leaf mantis. She mimics a leaf in the wild and pretends to be dead when scared or threatened.

When she arrived, she was lifeless and didn’t think she made the trip. She fooled me until I remembered her defensive skills.

When tarantulas are stressed or under attack they don’t always bite. They will extract tons of fiber like hairs that are irritating to skin and eyes.

Here you can see the flutter of tiny hairs and hope they travel in the air.

She knows they aren’t fertilized, so she’s webbing them up and throwing it away later.

We will take this opportunity to make her a new setting with fresh substrate.
