New Friend
There was some discussion, but no…this will not be our next intake…but he/she was pretty cute
Keeping cool or applying an all-over mud mask? You never know with Iman!
Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse are the only cows that have been really guarded around us, which has hence spilled onto Amy’s baby Geddy whose best friend is Lady Gaga. As you can see here, we continue to make progress and Lady G is slowly coming around. She finally took a German horse muffin from me a few weeks ago and I think that flavor explosion has really started to grease the wheels!
You’ll know we’ve made it when their ear tags are gone. #2024goals
Geddy Lee is getting more and more curious about us!
The new goats are adjusting well! Our vet is coming out on Friday to do the once over and assuming all goes well, we will be able to integrate everyone afterwards.
We are calling this goat week at F&H! I am going to do my best to share all of the pictures that are on my phone that I never quite get to posting…. 🙃
Have a good day, everyone!
A surprise structural test by Carlos Santana for the new run in today - not the best timing when I’m trying to finish the roof!
Post-Halloween goodness!
Little baby that came with his Momma a few weeks ago loves Lady Gaga! ❤️🐮
Lady Gaga’s Coming Out Party
In case anyone wants to see what pure joy looks like… Lady Gaga was THRILLED when her quarantine ended. She moved into the top pasture with the younger cows, but clearly *loved* meeting the big guys!
Welcoming the boys
I know we owe an update on Stewie’s big day, and we may have picked up someone else over this past weekend…but there’s just too much going on to post sequentially because what happened TODAY was too monumental not to shout it from the rooftops.
Early last week, we learned through another sanctuary of a severe animal cruelty case in North Carolina. Over 200 animals were found on a 2.5 acre property, either already deceased (we saw pictures of skulls and bodies) or in various stages of malnourishment and illness. Goats, sheep, donkeys, a mini horse, cows, chickens, and turkeys. All of the birds needed to be euthanized. Three mammals were also euthanized because they were too sick, although I don’t know what kinds. The “caretaker” was charged with 90 felony counts of animal cruelty.
We offered to take three of the Holstein calves, and went to pick them up today. Once there, we pivoted and ended up taking all four so not to break the boys up - they’ve already been through enough trauma. Sisu Refuge was there as well, picking up two mini zebu that had been labeled as mean but were really just nervous and not trusting (can you blame them?).
This was our first time intaking from a cruelty / hoarding case, and it was quite the eye opener. The county onsite vetting at the boarding location revealed that the boys had fevers, upper respiratory infections, and multiple parasites.
They are SO SKINNY. So, so, so skinny. Holstein tend to have protruding hip bones but the ribs and vertebrae is atypical. Our vet is coming out tomorrow morning to get eyes on them and see what else they need.
All we can do now is focus on the future and getting them to be their best selves in as short a period of time as possible. As soon as they were out of the trailer, they immediately started grazing. They gobbled up hay and grain, too. We promise they will only know the good life from here on out.
This certainly won’t be an inexpensive intake so if you are in a positio
I could not possibly be more excited to share that Tim finished the second pasture on Friday! It looks AMAZING. We of course wasted no time in opening up the gate so the herd could move into the new digs, which is twice as big as where they had been and has a lot more trees, shade, and terrain changes for them to explore.
This also signaled the first phase of Stewart Copeland’s integration. He had been alone over the past few weeks - at first, it was the normal quarantine whenever we bring anyone new in, but then it was because we didn’t want to just put him out with everyone. Our vet recommended we pick our nicest cow, and introduce Stewie to him/her first in hopes that they form a friendship that Stewie can depend on in the future. No question about it, that was our beloved Pat Smear. Since Pat is tight with Jay-Z and Freddie Mercury, we kept the three of them in the original pasture when the others moved to the new pasture.
So that means the next really exciting thing that happened on Friday is Stewie was moved into the original pasture and was introduced to his first friends. Heart. Exploding. 🥰🥰🥰
A HUGE day at Fat & Happy, made possible by months of hard work by Tim. We are all so lucky to have him!
Stay tuned for a post about Stewie’s big day! ❤️
Go home, 2022. You’re drunk.
(Sound on!!)
Some Monday morning goodness… Jay-Z hitting the bottle!
Tim is traveling for a few days so I am rolling solo. Thankfully the routine adjustments with Pat and Jay-Z in their new spot, and Fred and the goat to-be-named now in the mix have been manageable thus far. I was thinking of maybe pushing Jay-Z’s bottle to lunchtime but he made it quite clear that would not be permitted….
Have a good day, everyone!
