It’s that time of year again, when RHDV2 pops up in WA, whilst it’s active all year round it certainly loves the warmer spring/summer months. This year is showing it starting inland and moving towards the city with cases in York, Northam, Wundowie, Glen Forrest, Aubin Grove, Hilbert, Albany, Maddington and Murdoch.
Whilst there has been a very clear reduction in pet deaths in the oct - march 2022/2023 period, mostly due to our high vaccination rate and of course awareness, it’s important to note those stats can only continue if your rabbits are kept up to date with their vaccinations.
If you haven’t already or if your rabbit is overdue for their annual 12 month Filavac vaccine, now is the time to get this done. Stock of the vaccine is good and most vets keep it readily available.
Just to remind everyone, should you have an unusual death or multiple deaths, you can still contact warci for a test kit and paperwork. Tracking the virus whereabouts is important.
WARCI members test any unusual deaths, this helps the community and of course helps to keep our club safe. This year unfortunatly we have had one member have a death of an unvaccinated young rabbit that was unable to be vaccined at the time due to a minor health complication, all other vaccinated rabbits are to date doing fine.
I reiterate stats from last year in regards to the vaccine success rate.
🐇 Do you know of any vaccinated rabbits that have died from the virus?
Yes. I can confirm, I do check with the CSIRO on a weekly basis, there are two confirmed tests for a Filavac Vaccinated rabbit testing positive to RHDV2. Obviously this can change daily and I am waiting for the most recent report as there has been a higher death toll over east in the past couple weeks.
I must stress that I only take into consideration CONFIRMED TESTED VACCINATED deaths. If a person says they have lost vaccinated rabbits and don’t test, I can’t take those into account as I cannot verify they are vaccinated to begin with. (People do lie) it is a different test that needs to be ordered, to which I don’t tend to ask pet owners to do, but I have been requesting show exhibitors to do to aid the entire bunny community with their results. However, if you are a pet owner and your rabbits are vaccinated and you have multiple deaths and you are willing to do the liver and second test (it’s not the nicest) please let me know.
If you need a test kit, contact WARCI we keep a supply for WA, if you are out of state please contact [email protected] , your local rabbit club or submit a request on feralscan. All avenues maintain your privacy.
