Trail Etiquette:
- Horses, Hikers and Bikers. The first thing that you need to know is that there is a hierarchy on the trail. Horses have priority, followed by hikers, and then cyclists (if allowed). - Yield to Uphill Traffic: going uphill is hard work, and changing up your sp*ed can ruin your momentum. This is why people going uphill have the right of way. - Stay to the Right, Pass on the Left: If you want to pass someone from behind, get their attention by saying “on your left”. However, you don’t need to be overly formal or gruff and a friendly, “Hi there - can I get around you?” works just as well! - Leave no Trace: Clean up after yourself and pack out anything that you brought in. Clean up after you dog, and even bring home banana p*els and apple cores. - Tech: Unplug and remember that you (and your Twitter followers) aren’t the only people out there. Be aware of your surroundings and respect your fellow hikers. - Be Friendly and Have Fun: A “Howdy” or “Hello” can go a long way toward fostering a positive atmosphere among everyone on the trail.

“Less talk, more walk!” – George Masa

Would the Great Smoky Mountains National Park exist without George Masa “walking-the-walk”? In honor of Asian-Pacific-American Heritage Month, we’d like to honor the contributions of Japanese American George Masa to our park.

Masa was born in Osaka, Japan under the name Masahara Lizuka in 1881. He came to the United States in 1901 to study mining and ended up in Asheville, North Carolina, where he opened his own photography studio. He befriended writer Horace Kephart and the two camped and explored the mountains, working on maps for the proposed national park and Appalachian Trail. His photos, and Kephart’s words, inspired many to take action in support of the park, including John D. Rockefeller, Jr, who donated $5 million towards the purchase of lands for the new park.

Neither Kephart or Masa would see the official establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934, but two peaks bear their names, Mount Kephart and Masa K**b.
How can you “walk the walk” for your favorite public lands?
