Cant think of a better way to start the New Year by celebrating Jill Barton and EEA. Jill is the founder and director of Egypt Equine Aid, Australian charity treatment centre for working animals in Cairo, and Hercules, the handsome festive boy in the photo, representing the millions of working animals of Cairo
EEA daily sees streams of sick, injured, beaten and broken working animals brought to their clinic where all animals are treated for free. Some are treated and leave with their owner, some require long term treatment and healing in the peaceful and nurturing environment provided at the sanctuary. Sadly, for a few it is their final resting place, where they can lay down worn out bodies and depart knowing they are truly loved, and in peace.
EEA is also our biggest client for the protective nosebands and every animal that passes through the clinic receives a soft durable cover to protect sore noses.
Thank you Jill, for being there for the hardworking animals of Cairo and for generously supporting the girls of Baharwa to establish their project and help enable their economic independence
On behalf of all of us involved in Nile-Craft project we sincerely appreciate your leadership, your example and for being there for the animals, for your team of dedicated vets and the for girls of Baharwa.
Happy New Year Everyone!!

This week, with the help of supervisors Ranna and Mona, the girls have produced their first simple bags on the sewing machines. They are rightly proud of their new skills and are working on mastering the use of both regular and industrial machines, and hopefully producing a variety of sewn goods in the near future.
These bags will be sold in a Syrian grocery, which both provides delicious authentic Syrian foods and encourages customers to reject plastic packaging in favour of these simple but sturdy re-usable bags.
They are now also producing colourful tassels which will be sold in bulk!

Humans needed a kind, patient, hard-working little companion to help them carry their loads and earn their bread.
You would think we would show kindness and mercy to our uncomplaining friends.
But no, humans beat them, mistreat them and work them to their deaths.
Have you seen a donkey cry? Maybe you haven't looked hard enough.
Have mercy and compassion for these brave little souls and lighten their load with a touch of kindness.

Have you ever seen the cry of a donkey? If you truly see the tears of that poor animal, your heart will melt with sorrow. Big tears which flow from eyelashes to cheek, trembling lips, hunched back... 😢Let this pathetic picture encourage us to protest against the cruelty which humanity commits to this innocent animal.

PYRAMIDS horses and camels urgently need help!!

Since several months there have been no tourists at the pyramids area due to the lockdown. This of course has spelled disaster for many local people dependent on the tourist industry as well as the working horses and camels, who are suffering shortage of food, medical care and proper maintenance due to the financial crisis of their owners.

EUFAR (Egypt Unites for Animal Rights) is active there and volunteers go regularly to take food and tend to the welfare of the animals.

They desperately need nose-bands for the animals there. If you would like to help by purchasing a few nose-bands for these poor animals chained up there, they would be extremely grateful. All donations will be acknowledged by EUFAR. Please pm me if you would like to help. No amount is too little.

Meet our small sewing team of local girls (foreground). Yesterday was a special day as we were delighted to welcome the visit of Jill Barton from Egypt Equine Aid and her assistant trainee vet Phoebe. EEA treats dozens of sick and injured animals daily and it is their practice to distribute the nosebands free of charge to the owners of working animals that come to the centre. It was truly a great beginning for us as we launch our project, allowing the girls to make a small income while helping to relieve the suffering of working animals, and we are greatly looking forward to an ongoing connection to EEA. Here we are working and enjoying the shady gardens in front of the Nile at the Nile River School, Baharwa, Al Ayat.

Welcome to our NILE-CRAFT project for working animals, a sister project of Nile River School!

A familiar sight on the streets of Cairo, poor little donkeys, faithfully pulling their loads and their mostly impoverished owners, with a cruel and ill-fitting chain across their noses. These chain chafe non-stop and often create horrible wounds, which can also get infected and must be unbearable painful. The donkey must silently suffer their pain for they have no way to tell their owners, and little hope that the owners would even care. In the full heat of 40 + summers, the iron chains heat up and become like a branding iron permanently sitting across their noses.
The nosebands are designed to ease the suffering and are distributed for free, by volunteers. I have been making and distributing donkey nosebands for a while, but the needs far exceed the capacity of any individual.
Last week, with the kind help of Ranna Abu-Odeh, we began training some of the girls of the Nile River School in Baharwa village, Al Ayat to make these nosebands.

The dual aim of the project is to help the girls, who, as settled Bedouin in a conservative, traditional rural culture, are mostly confined to their homes, with minimal education and little hope of finding work beyond menial domestic chores and simple farming tasks. It is a simple project with the aim of imparting simple sewing and crafting skills as a first step to help them generate a little income and hopefully open their horizons, to future possibilities.
In turn, we hope this will sow the seeds of care for their domestic animals, and be able to supply some of the animals charities with the nosebands for the working animals they treat.

The hand sewn nosebands will be available to those interested in sponsoring our efforts for a token price to support these girls of Nile River School's Nile-Craft project and cover the costs of the materials.

These can be made available for pick up in Maadi, for you to distribute as you wish, or can purchased for donation to Egypt Equine Aid who see a steady stream of daily patients at their clinic for working animals in Sakkara or EUFAR. Both said charities also work with the animals currently suffering the collapse of tourism at the Giza pyramids.

Thanking you for your kind support both for our girls and for the working donkeys!

Please message for further information of to place an order.
