NEWS: Update on CDC Dog Importation Rule
Dear CKC Members,
We’re pleased to provide you with the latest update regarding the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Dog Importation Rule effective August 1, 2024. This update includes:
The latest news regarding requirements for Canadians bringing dogs into the U.S.
CKC’s latest advocacy activities
How you can advocate for CKC Members and purebred dogs
Latest Update
DISCLAIMER: the following is a brief summary of the requirements and changes. All information is subject to change at any time and the following is NOT an official record. Please consult the CFIA and CDC websites at all times for the official requirements and most up-to-date information.
Due to the ongoing advocacy by CKC and other organizations, as well as the continued negotiations by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) with the CDC, there are a few updates to help streamline the process. You will notice that there is no longer a requirement for certification of forms or records by a CFIA veterinarian, just a licensed Canadian Veterinarian. Your vet can find all of the requirements and export documents on the CFIA website.
The following is required for dogs entering the U.S. from Canada, as of August 1, 2024.
be at least 6 months of age
have an International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-compliant or universally readable microchip. [Note: all microchips sold by CKC are ISO-compliant]
have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt
must be submitted through the CDC website
a receipt is required for each dog and for every entry into the U.S.
appear healthy upon arrival
have an export document issued and signed by a Canadian licensed veterinarian (Authorized Veterinarian)
all dogs entering the U.S. from Canada will also need to be accompanied by additional documentation which varies depending on where the dog was vaccinated against rabies and where the dog has been in the past 6 months before entering the U.S.
When visiting the CDC website, you can click on the button labelled “Launch DogBot” and it will walk you through the forms you need to fill out. Alternatively, you can visit this page on the CDC website and read about the required forms under the title “Required documents for dogs that have been ONLY in countries that are dog rabies-free or low-risk during the 6 months before entry (and do not have Certification of U.S.-Issued Rabies Vaccination form or USDA-endorsed export health certificate)”. You will find 3 acceptable options for additional documentation needed in addition to a completed CDC Dog Import Form.
CKC Advocacy
Since our last update, the CKC has partnered with the American Kennel Club on a joint letter to Director Mandy Cohen, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with the aim of doing the following:
Raising awareness about both the CKC and AKC, our members and the registration processes and requirements in each country.
Highlighting the impact of the new dog importation rule on CKC and AKC Members; responsible breeders and dog enthusiasts.
Raising concerns and requesting exemptions for CKC and AKC registered dogs.
The letter from CKC and AKC can be found here.
CKC Member Advocacy: What You Can Do!
We encourage CKC members to write letters to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, copying the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Minister of Health highlighting the following:
The impact that the CDC importation rule will have on you and your work as a responsible breeder or purebred dog enthusiast.
Reiterating the concerns expressed by CKC and AKC in our recent letter.
Reiterating the requests made by the CKC and AKC in our recent letter.
To help you with writing a letter, we have created a LETTER TEMPLATE you can use. We ask that you keep the requests of the CDC consistent with what CKC and AKC have put forward. By keeping our requests consistent, we strengthen the concerns and solutions put forward.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the CKC Advocacy Team at [email protected] or by contacting our Customer Service Team via LIVE CHAT or by calling toll-free 1-855-364-7252.

A fabulous weekend at Erie Shores Kennel Club in Caledonia. This is why I love this breed so much, their temperament, beauty and all around good mannered dogs. A wonderful weekend to see some great friends and meeting some new ones.
Ms Rhea did very well, at 9 months old, she placed in all of her Senior Puppy Class Shows
Saturday 1st Place - Erie Shores Kennel Club
Sunday 2nd Place - Erie Shores Kennel Club
Sunday 3rd Place-Sweepstakes Golden Retriever Club of Canada
Sunday 1st Place Golden Retriever Club of Canada
It's official, Ms Aleigh received her certificate in the mail today
We are over the moon excited to announce that Ms. Cora has passed all of her health clearances and we will be expecting puppies some time in the fall.
The Sire for Cora will also have the same excellence in his linage and has passing health clearances.
For those that know me, my dogs are a huge part of my world. We have been waiting for some time now for clearances in order to continue our breeding program.
The road has been long, we are patient and knowing that we are giving future puppies the best chance and start in life is extremely important to us.
The next few months, Cora will be in the CKC Confirmation Show ring and we hope to obtain her CKC Championship before she has her first litter.
We are pleased to say that my beautiful Aleigh is a Grand Champion.
At the Seaway show this weekend, she placed Select in each of the three shows
Ms Rhea's entry in Jr Puppy reward her with reserve bitch in the one show.
we entered both girls in the sanction match and showed very well.
had a wonderful breeder friend by my side this weekend, thank you Jane Young-Lalande for your great company and advise
the show ring is fun, no doubt, a place to meet other amazing breeders, share idea and learn.
the most amazing part of my journey as a breeder is the wonderful families I meet and match to my beautiful babies. I love hearing from them on the growth of their pup, knowing the are healthy happy and thriving. the best part is the after visits with their hugs and kisses
Charlie is part of the pack on donating blood and saving another fur life.
His blood type is negative and in dog world he is a universal donor.
he was a trooper and enjoyed his treats afterwards
Aleigh and Cora soon be donors as well once they finish their heat cycle
puppy class tonight, Ms Rhea is learning a lot and loving her treats
