Good day everyone! Some incredible news to share. Thank you to all of you who took action to help these beagles, by speaking out, fostering, adopting, and making some noise! We love you for it

Two years ago, police and federal agents raided a dog-breeding facility west of Richmond, confiscating more than 4,400 animals – many in urgent need of veterinary care. This week, Sandy Hausman reports that Envigo pleaded guilty to a violation of the Animal Welfare Act and will pay the largest fin...

State Sen. Creigh Deeds adopted a beagle from the infamous Envigo breeding farm. In early April, she got spooked and ran away. Here's how she was found.

🚨 This is urgent! 🚨

PETA and other animal protection advocates recently asked Gov. Glenn Youngkin to offer an amendment to HB 2348 and SB 1271 restoring language requiring that every year, taxpayer-funded universities post publicly the number of all animals in their laboratories. Right now, the bill only requires facilities to report animals covered by the federal Animal Welfare Act (which protects only 5% of the animals used in experiments).

We need your help! The governor may take action on these bills any day now, and he needs to hear from his constituents. Please urge him to amend both bills.

🐾 Wally's available for adoption! 🐾

When PETA’s fieldworkers found Wally, he was chained outside to a wire crate in the middle of winter. But the months-old puppy was barely recognizable as such due to a severe case of mange—a parasitic skin disease caused by mites—that left him looking more like a baby rhinoceros. He had lost much of his fur, and a secondary infection caused his thickened, scaly skin to become inflamed and itchy.

After just a few weeks of veterinary treatment and some loving care in a foster home, Wally’s fur grew back and his skin (and spirit) healed. These days, he’s the exuberant, playful puppy he was meant to be all along—and he finally looks like one, too.

Do you have room in your family for a fun, free-spirited puppy like Wally? E-mail [email protected] to learn more.

Wally had mange so severe that he barely looked like a puppy. After some veterinary care courtesy of PETA, he’s got a new look and a new lease on life.

Virginians care deeply about animals bred and used for testing.

🐶🐭🐰🐱🐒

As we recently posted about, two transparency bills (HB2348 and SB1271) were weakened at the last minute. But it’s not too late!

Animal protection groups have asked Gov. Glenn Youngkin to offer an amendment to both bills, restoring the requirement that public universities share publicly the number of all animals in their laboratories—information that animal shelters, wildlife rehabilitators, and breeders of dogs and cats for experimental purposes are already required to keep and share. There is no reason why our public universities should be exempt from this basic transparency requirement!

Please urge Gov. Youngkin to amend HB348 and SB1271. Click below to take action!

We fought hard this session to make some progress for animals who are used for experimental purposed in publicly funded facilities in our state, but at least one lobbyist, behind closed doors, at the 11th hour, reneged on previously agreed upon language. That is not right, and we will not give up. Are you with us? I hope so, as we will soon be asking you to speak out. Stay tuned!

“The way the bill came out of conference, it doesn’t include all the animals who are involved in research and it doesn’t require them to present the information to the state, which was the whole point,” said Sen. Jennifer Boysko.

Action needed 👇

Senate Bill 1271, a bipartisan bill that seeks to establish a baseline regarding the number of animals used in experiments, is heading to the Senate floor!

This legislation has evolved significantly from its initial version, and is now very straightforward. If passed, it simply would require publicly funded facilities to report to the Commonwealth the total number of animals (and their species) used in experiments every year.

Please help get this bill through the Senate by urging your Virginia senator to vote YES on SB 1271! It’s important that they hear from you right away, as they will vote by Tuesday (2/7). It takes only a moment using the link below:

Hello Friends, please read, like, share and prepare. Did you know that Virginia General Assembly session 2023 convened yesterday? We are BACK with bills that will need your voice, your support, and your ACTION. Following the historic passage of five “Beagle Bills” in 2022, some of our legislative champions have filed vital legislation to advance protection for animals used for experiments in Virginia. More than 30 facilities in the Commonwealth still experiment on animals, including dogs, primates, pigs, rats, mice, birds, and many other species.

We will need you. Please, re-activate your interest in this page, and let’s get started. The animals depend on YOU, Virginians, to make noise. We will keep you very closely posted on the legislation, post action alerts, real-time updates from the General Assembly, and tell you how you can help. Are you with us? We hope so. Our bills ask for transparency, accountability, and compliance with existing federal law. Stay tuned!

Our dear champion Sen. Stanley has introduced SB1230, which would establish penalties and restrictions for animal testing facilities that have violated the federal Animal Welfare Act.

And wonderful champions Sen. Boysko and Del. Shin have introduced companion bills, SB1271 & HB2042, which would require all facilities using animals to submit annual reports regarding their use of animals, and would establish whistleblower protections.

Ruby, pictured below, would like to know if you are with us! Like, share, and get ready to contact your representatives! Thank you!

🚨 Attention Virginians! 🚨

In 2022 the Virginia Coalition for Beagle Protection accomplished SO much for animals. Because of our passionate supporters, Virginia passed lifesaving legal protections for cats and dogs bred for experimentation—and rescued more than 4,000 dogs from their real-life Envigo nightmare!

But we still have work to do—and we need your help.

The 2023 Virginia General Assembly session begins on January 11, and we are anticipating legislators will introduce several important animal-related bills.

Can we count on you to help us again? Drop an emoji below if you’re in 👇

Did you hear that Congress passed the FDA’s Modernization Act 2.0 last week? It’s just awaiting the president’s signature before becoming law 😊

Once signed and enacted, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will be allowed to consider superior, non-animal drug testing methods, instead of requiring deadly and scientifically bogus animal tests.

That means another win for beagles—and other animals used in cruel experiments! 🥳

WE DID IT! 🎉🙌

The groundbreaking FDA Modernization Act—which will help stop horrific animal tests at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—has passed Congress in the omnibus bill!

The FDA will have the authority to spare rabbits, rats, mice, dogs, monkeys, & so many other animals in drug development once President Joe Biden signs it into law 💖

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving to our faithful followers! We have so, so much to be thankful for this year. Just last year at this same time, more than 5000 beagle dogs and puppies were held captive at Envigo's horrific prison, where they were deprived of everything natural and important to them. Thanks to a collection of good humans, they have all been liberated. We are especially thankful for you, our powerful army, for legislators like Sen. Jennifer Boysko Sen. William M. Stanley, and Del. Rob Bell and so many others who helped ensure that the right thing happened, for the Department of Justice, the Humane Society of the United States, Homeward Trails, PETA, and all of the coalition members who united for the sake of the dogs.

Today--after more than 60 years of operation--the prison stands empty, and sweet little beagles like Rose, pictured here with adopter Stella, will never be bred, shipped and/or experimented on. They are where they belong - in homes with people who love, cherish and respect them.

Thank you to each and every one of you for helping to make this happen. We will need you during legislative session 2023, so please keep sharing and following this page.

Have a peaceful and love-filled holiday

So this little muffin is starting to review applicants for her forever home!
Bonnie is anxious to get started and settled into her new life as part of a family, but we’re encouraging her to be picky.

A few things Bonnie is hoping for in her forever home and family:
• A home with another dog
• A fenced-in yard
• Humans with patience
• Humans who like to cuddle with their dog

A little bit about Bonnie:
• Bonnie is 2 1/2 years old
• Bonnie is an Envigo survivor
• Bonnie loves people and other dogs
• She is very fearful of kennels/crates and WILL NOT BE a dog you can crate train. She spent her life in a cage and she’s not going back in one.
• She is shy and skittish
• She startles at different noises, sometimes loud, sometimes not loud at all
• Bonnie would like to be invited to sleep with her human in her human’s bed

Bonnie is a very sweet and soft little beagle girl. She’s quite playful and likes toys!
Bonnie loves walks and is getting better on leash every day, and learned to use a doggy door, too.
We fell in love with Bonnie pretty much at first sight and we are so excited for her to find a home where she can flourish and be doted upon.

In early August, Homeward Trails Animal Rescue rescued dozens of Envigo survivors for placement and adoption. One of these dogs, a puppy previously known only as CNE CCU, was shuttled by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) to the Virginia Beach SPCA , where he was quickly adopted ❤

Last week this puppy’s new guardian watched a recorded interview with PETA’s Daphna Nachminovitch (the video is linked in the comments) – and recognized his ear tag number! She messaged us, sharing that he now goes by Copper, and is “living his best life at home in Virginia Beach,” where he joined an active duty military family with two teenage human siblings and two canine brothers. We couldn’t be happier to learn of this sweet boy’s happy ending!

If you have adopted an Envigo survivor, please send us a message – we love sharing adoption stories!

Calling all senior beagle lovers! There is a sweet beagle girl in the Richmond/Henrico area who is in need of a home.

Aptly named “Beagle,” this dashing 9-year-old gal recently said goodbye to her guardian due to their declining health. Beagle is reported as a sweet girl who loves her walks and treats. She also loves a good nap and can be territorial over beds/couches, so it’s recommended she go to an adult-only home. She would do best in a home with a fenced-in yard and someone who can help her feel safe and secure. She is already spayed.

Beagle is currently living with family who can share more information about her personality. If you’re interested in potentially opening your home to her, please send us a private message and we will connect you with her people!

When rescued from Envigo's breeding facility in early August, Violet was nervous and very underweight. She was bullied by other dogs due to her small size 😟 A veterinarian said she had already had a litter of puppies (despite being only a year old - really just a baby herself!).

Since then, Violet was adopted by a wonderful family and now enjoys a view of North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains 🌲🌲🌲 Her older beagle brother has already taught her a lot, including how to:
🐶 Take a well-earned post-hike nap
🐶 Play in creeks
🐶 Investigate all the sniffables around the yard
🐶 Greet the cows who live next-door
🐶 Beg for extra treats (and get them)
🐶 Howl like a proper beagle

Go live your life, Violet. You finally have all the love and respect you've always deserved 💜

This week, we got to honor some of the Virginia legislators whose hard work during General Assembly session 2022 resulted in the historic passage of the bills now known as the "Beagle Bills." To say that it took a village is an understatement. And you, our followers and supporters, were part of that village. Together, we made history. In the General Assembly, we had the incredible fortune of working with legislators who cared about right and wrong, who were not afraid to take chances or fight for justice. Even though the Beagle Bills passed unanimously, there were road blocks along the way, and the bills passed in spite of some people's efforts and endless resources, and in spite of Envigo hiring a lucrative lobbying firm. The Virginia Coalition for Beagle Protection--YOU--our online army, helped get us here. Thank you to each and every one of you. If any of the legislators recognized in this post represent you, please take a moment to thank them with a note. A big round of applause for them, and for you.

Senator Jennifer B. Boysko

Delegate Shelly Simonds
Delegate Michael J. Webert
