A wonderful information posted from The Renew Centre in Uley.

Massage is the hands on approach to muscles. There are many different techniques that can be used within a massage treatment, and be used for many different types of injuries. Massage at The Renew Centre can be utilised as a stand alone technique, as part of a treatment plan, as part of hydrotherapy, and as part of the sport medicine routine maintenance for your dogs.

As dogs get older, the joints don’t tend to work as well, and they get stiffer, so the muscles tend to spasm around the joints, creating more pain in this region. Massage and muscle work will drastically reduce the stiffness and pain levels in the older, more arthritic dogs. Massage can also be performed in the underwater treadmill, so that the relaxation and being surrounded by the warm water of the tank, has a deeper and more profound effect on the body.

Remembering one of our Golden Oldies, dearest Wisp.

My first thoughts were how sad we all were to hear it was time for Wisp to leave her body and of course how much she would be missed by her family Noreen and Jon. Anyone who has loved and cared for a companion animal for any length of time will know the heartache that comes with saying goodbye.

Wisp was often at training both in obedience groups with Ann and Liz when she was younger and more recently the Golden Oldies Canine Club and Fun Agility sessions, she was also one of my dog Erics favourite furry friends, although he found her speed terrifying he definitely was in awe of her smart, beautiful and independent lady attitude. Even in her later years she was the most exuberant dog to go through the tunnel and over the sensibly sized jumps. My goodness she was so full of the joys of life it was inspiring to see.
The last time that I saw Wisp was at a fun agility session and once Noreen had warmed her up and given her the go ahead Wisp tucked her bottom under and went of like a rocket putting a smile on everyone's face, I had the pleasure of giving her back rubs and telling her how wonderful she was which of course she knew already, Jon and Noreen had made sure she knew that without any doubt in her sharp mind.

After a very tough start to life she was a lucky soul to find herself with Noreen and Jon, she will be sorely missed but fondly remembered forever.

I know that Wisp will be greatly missed at training sessions by all who met her, she would light up any space just like the star she is today.

Love to both Jon & Noreen from all of us at SWDTBC.

Only a few more days until we get to meet the next class of Golden Oldies and we cannot wait.
Lets celebrate the ups and downs of sharing our lives with our companion animals. What has been the best bits of spending time with your dog and what have been the worst? I'll start..... see in comments section

We celebrate oldest living humans, so why wouldn't we celebrate world's oldest dog? ☺️ TobyKeith (not the country singer) was born on Jan. 9, 2001, and was 21 years and 66 days old on March 16 when Guinness World Records confirmed he was the oldest dog alive.

"People can’t believe how good he looks for his age," the dog's owner, Gisela Shore, told Guinness.

She has had him most of his life and adopted him from a shelter when he was a puppy. His tips for staying young are to bark less 😄 play more.

Even though plenty of people have seen this post today I thought it was worth a re share.
Its worth ensuring your garden is secure and that your dog has its collar and ID on before it goes out for toilet breaks whist its windy weather, if its really bad then perhaps pop it on a longline and go out with it if its safe to do so.
A day spent doing short fun training exercises indoors with your dog can be equally as rewarding as going out when the alternative might be losing your dog or gettin blown away!.
Stay safe friends and if you are stuck for things to do with your dog get in touch for some ideas x

Be careful out there!

Hi to all you Golden Oldies page supporters, I am needing your help with something. I am trying to find the perfect photo of a puppy to use on a new leaflet I am creating and wondered if any of you could post your best puppy pics into the comments section below. The photo has to be clear, it can be of any of your or anyone else's puppy so long as the owner is happy for the image to used on a new leaflet for training. Any help would be greatly appreciated plus it would be lovely to see your photos. Many thanks, Sally

This can be a bit of a tricky subject to discuss with some owners.
I personally know pet owners that have had to deal with the long term effects of ball launchers or repeated ball throwing, where when the animal was young it was a great way to wear them out and give everyone a peaceful evening only to find the later years were spent trying to manage its pain alongside a huge monthly medication bill. It's not about not throwing a ball for your dog, its about being aware of the long term implications.
This is yet another brilliant post from Canine Arthritis Management as well as Holly’s Army .
Go check both pages out for further useful info to help your companion animals.

Your dogs walks and exercise are about so much more than their physical health - its really important for the mental health too. So even in dogs with arthritis we want to make sure their time on walks is fun and stimulating.
That doesn't mean however that they should be doing repetitive and high impact activities like ball chasing!!

I know it might make us sound boring, but honestly this type of activity can be harmful in a lot of ways and there of lot's of things you can do instead!
Check out the graphic below and make sure to look out for posts the rest of this week for ideas on what you can do to help ditch the ball throwing!

What are your dogs favourite low impact and joint safe activities? Let us know in the comments below.

A great post by Caroline at Deaf not Difficult page. It is always good to stop and think WHY? might my dog appear to be particularly stubborn or defiant in their later years. I myself know the trap owners can potentially fall into when you feel like they are still only middle aged when in fact they are alot older than we like to admit, their age rolls off the tongue easily and with an air of proudness when people ask but does it truly hit home when you say the words. Its sometimes hard to come to terms with when we know our precious dogs are ageing, for some dogs our ignorance is certainly not bliss. Take a moment to consider your dogs age and what it might mean both pysically and mentally for them and we will all be better for it 🥰

As dogs age, one thing we always need to bear in mind is the change in hearing that can also naturally occur.
This can be for so many reasons including natural degeneration, different ailments and diseases, toxins that can build up naturally over the years and so on.
Whilst it is not always easy to spot on its own, we can look out for tell tale signs such as:
The recall is not as good as it once was,
They aren't as responsive any more,
Seem to respond to higher or lower sounds but not 'normal' range, Can appear more anxious,
Bark at things they wouldn't have done previously or what appears to be nothing at all,
Not as confident etc.
There are many more signs changes could well be taking place, but it is important not to think that as your dog is getting older it is becoming stubborn, awkward, more difficult, determined not to pay attention.
This is not normally the case at all, they are just going through some body changes and we need to be flexible and able to change with them to provide support during this time.
It is something I cover in great depth on the courses I teach, and also encounter a lot of as a behaviourist.
Older dogs are fabulous, we just need to take the time to understand what is happening for them and provide what they need. It is what we would want after all.

25/11/2021

The benefits of training your dog to do things confidently such as walking up and down a ramp is priceless when they get into their older years, it would be easy to think that a dog can be taught to use the ramp when needed but remember as the dog ages they can have a tendency to begin to lose their confidence in being able to navigate new obstacles and surfaces.
Not all ramps will suit your dog, research them and check the length and stability so you can be sure the incline wont be too steep for them and not too heavy for you.
Any experiences you've had with dog ramps please do share in the comments section below.
Have a great day with your dogs 🐶

It can be tricky to retrain an older dog out of a behaviour or habit they have had for a long time. This is why training your dog at a young age to use a ramp or steps to get in and out of the car, or to wait to be lifted if they are small enough, can be really helpful for managing arthritis in their senior years!
Jumping out of the car can place more than 4 times your dogs weight through their front legs! This is A LOT of pressure to be placing through already weak and painful joints.
Train the early in life and give 👍

A 29 year old dog, wow! How old is your dog now?

that the greatest reliable age recorded for a dog was over 29 years old?!

Old age for a dog depends heavily on their breed and size, but there are ways to tell if your dog is getting on in years.

Not just for the dogs.

I am thrilled to be able to offer this course to owners and their older dogs.

Inspired by my old rescued Battersea Boy Eric I decided to launch a group purely for dogs that are in their latter years. It offers an opportunity for owners of older dogs to come along and really encourage new activities and further enrich their precious dogs lives.

I have been inspired by the enthusiasm of the dogs and their owners at these sessions. It really is time well spent that we can hold dear for years to come.
