Our mental images of the extinct thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, are likely tinged in greyscale, since that’s the main way we’re used to seeing them. But now, one of the most famous videos of the animal, shot in 1933, has been professionally colorized for the first time.

Making Perfect Progress!

Did you see our first photo of this growing Florida Cooter on August 14th? https://www.facebook.com/TurtleSurvival/posts/10158623695181680

Now you can see the development of its scutes, the outer keratin layer covering the bony shell. The dark areas depict expression of the pigment melanin in the thin epithelial (skin) layer beneath the scute!

Here, Cris Hagen "candles" a developing turtle embryo with a flashlight. You can clearly see the young turtle and the network of blood vessels in the chorioallantoic membrane through the eggshell.

These eggs are from a Florida Cooter (Pseudemys floridana) that was hit by a car in early July. Cris Hagen performed an egg extraction to give the eggs within her a second chance. For this young turtle, all looks to be doing great and it should hatch in just a couple weeks!

Toad head agama: Phrynocephalus mystaceus Galli
When threatened, the toad head agama will open it's mouth and hiss while displaying it's mouth flaps. It also curls it's tail to look like a scorpion tail to help deter other animals from eating it. If that doesn't make a predator leave it alone, it wiggles it's body until it stinks into the sand and buries itself. Nature is weird. This is another really awesome lizard from Phill Arids Only

Happy World Snake Day! Let's see your "cute" snake pics!

Why is July 16 designated as World Snake Day? Yes, snakes give many folks the wi***es or heebie-jeebies with many studies reporting that at least 60% of Americans have a fear of snakes. However, snakes deserve much credit for the invaluable services they provide in ecosystems around the world.

While pet owners, snake conservationists, and snake keepers celebrate Snake Day every day, today is a day for those people to educate others.

Even those with a sincere fear of snakes, known as ophidiophobia, should take time from their day to attempt an appreciation and understanding for snakes. They are amazing animals that make contributions to the world.

One of the most important roles played by snakes is their position in the food chain. Not only do they keep rodent populations in check, but many snakes feed on insects. Rodent overpopulation cause safety risks, such as fires, and rodents are known carriers of many diseases that affect humans.

To help some of the snake haters possibly see snakes in a different light, here is a photo of, well, cute snakes. Please post your cute snake pics, too.
