Now there is a three-some that will keep any active family busy. Luke, a Kentucky native, who came to Almost Home Foster & Rescue as a semi-feral 2-year-old. Ammo, from Indiana, found her way to AHFK when she was surrendered due to “a new baby in the home,” and Bit-O-Honey, Wisconsin bred as a backyard breeder dog that didn’t receive the necessary medical attention when her navel become infected shortly after birth, causing staph infection that settled into her right hip muscle.

All three were adopted by Ben and Emily and their two daughters of Wisconsin. Bit-O-Honey, aka Bitsy is being instructed in the art of Puppy Manners by Helen, the oldest daughter who projects the values of Southern hospitality and manners herself. She is proper, and the perfect teacher and instructor to these baying Beagles.

Momma Emily states that Bit-O-Honey has the sweetest disposition, but can be oh, so sassy.

Thank you again for giving all three of these beautiful souls and home and a family with love, compassion, and patience. I am incredibly honored to have met and worked with this family.

Ceyone, a petite, Maltese/Toy Poodle Mix was found in the wee, dark hours of the morning, laying atop the garbage in a large, 32-gallon container. It appeared as if she was thrown out with the trash as one would do when cleaning their car. She was just laying there. Too stunned to move. Too afraid to venture into unknown territory? Too naïve about the big, cruel world out there?

As luck would have it, a resident in the area was just beginning her day. After cleaning up her kitchen she trotted her bag of garbage out to the container and there she was. Cold, wet, dirty, and laying in the garbage. A call was made to Kayla Dillow, one of the many West Virginia fosters that Almost Home Foster & Rescue has had the honor to work with. Kayla contacted AHFK immediately and asked if we could make room for this wee girl. We said, “Yes.” We named her Ceyone ~ One Rising with the Sun. Radiant and Bright Rays of the Early Morning Rising Sun.

We had received applications for the adoption of Ceyone even before she left West Virginia. We processed the applications and by the time she arrived in Minnesota, to Almost Home Foster & Rescue, we had a meet and greet lined up.

Last Saturday, Ceyone made the two-hour trip to the North to meet her new family. Momma Danielle and Poppa Jeff were excited to meet her. Sully, her new fur-brother, was a little indifferent, wondering “just how long did she think she was gonna stay?” Ceyone felt right at home as she did zoomies throughout her new home. And getting a family photo was nearly impossible.

Danielle and Jeff, thank you so much for opening your hearts and home to this little dumpster-diver. Thank you for giving her the home and family that she so richly deserves. We are furever grateful.

PUPDATE ON RICKY:

We are all on this earth to serve a purpose. For some, it never comes to light, and they wander, aimlessly for what seems like eternity. For others, it is apparent and immediate and lifelong passions and goals can be fulfilled, life is good. Life is lived and enjoyed.

I believe that the same holds true for our furry kids. Some dogs are never allowed to fulfill their true purpose here on earth and live in a world of chains, crates and cages. Then there are others who get that second chance and find their purpose, their worth, and in doing so, give others purpose and value.

Ricky started his life with humans that couldn’t or wouldn’t see his potential. They didn’t explore options and venues that would promote his value, what he could offer his family and others. He wasn’t allowed to be productive. He was given food…way too much, and he sat. Finally, the family tossed him out like litter from a car. This is where Matt and his family stepped in.

Matt lives in rural Maine. His front yard is a gorgeous view of the lake. His backyard is hiking and walking trails, a wooded area filled with scents and stimuli…a Beagle’s dream. This landscape provides the perfect setting for one to escape to, to meditate, to relax and take it all in…maybe even to get one’s head straight again.

Matt is caretaker for his mother. She is 90 years of age and has severe dementia. She is non-verbal. Well, she was that is, until Ricky arrived. Ricky took on the role of Therapy Dog Exceptional’, making himself right at home and finding a spot on Mother’s bed. This rousted Mom, she began petting Ricky, looked at Matt and said, “Whose dog is this?”

“In just a few days, Ricky has been a great therapy dog for my 90-year-old mother, who lives with me,” Matt wrote me this morning. “What a wonderful, gentle, affectionate guy.”

To the family that discarded Ricky in Cambridge MN…thank you! Although selfish and cruel, it was the best thing for Ricky. His new life is filled with purpose, with meaning, with love, it couldn’t be any grander.

About 4 weeks ago, Adam and his family had adopted Jewels. Jewels originally came from an Amish puppy mill but was purchased at an auction by another breeder. We at Almost Home Foster & Rescue were not aware of Jewels origination and thus, not aware of her lack of socialization with humans and, most of all, children. She was adopted quickly after her vetting appointments, and she was loved by all. The issue, Jewels was terrified of the children. Anytime they walked into the room, she fled. Her human brother sat down with her one afternoon, Jewels ran from him. It broke his heart. He couldn’t understand why Jewels didn’t love him.

Adam contacted AHFK and told me about Jewels plight. He told me that she did wonderfully amongst adults, she was comfortable walking around them, sitting with them, and enjoyed being near them, until a child entered the room…then she was off and hiding under Adam’s desk, her safe spot. He wanted a positive experience for both his children and for Jewels.

This past weekend I took Raina, an 18-week-old Cavapoo puppy, to Adam’s home. It was still dark when I arrived at their home and the temp was 44 degrees. Parker ran from the house when he discovered me walking Raina, barefooted, shorts and a T-shirt, but he didn’t care. He called the puppy, and she immediately went to him and slathered his face with kisses. Adam appeared shortly after and with Raina between them, Parker said, “Dad, she loves me, she really loves me.” With a catch in our voices and a tear in our eyes, his dad responded, “Yes, she does buddy, yes she does.”

Jewels came back with me. We felt that with a new puppy in the home her attention would be limited, and they didn’t feel that was fair to her. She needs a home where she can be the center of attention, where the mood and atmosphere are calming, where she can have all the time in the world to acclimate and decompress. Once we arrived home, her tail started wagging…her friends were in the play yard, and she was home…for now.

Thank you, Adam, for allowing AHFK the opportunity to find the right furbaby for your family. Thank you for being the amazing individual that you are, for being the “bestest” dad there is.

PUPDATE ON MAAKE (NKA MAX)

We’re a very happy little family ❤️🐶 So absolutely we are ready to adopt!!
He’s perfect an incredibly smart!! He knows the word “potty” and goes out without fail, his favorite toy is the purple ball but will pick out a tug toy from the pile as well and is eating his food in healthy portions.
He has been to the vet for the lepto shot and to the groomer for a bath and trim. I miss his furry face and body so I’ll let it grow out and keep him groomed.
All in all we both think he is the perfect dog for us and feel very fortunate to have him🙏
Sending a few pics and our thanks for bringing this guy to us.

Right now we still have plans to go to MN for Thanksgiving and hope your offer still stands to keep him for a few days.
If so, let me know and we’ll make arrangements.

Thank you again🙏🙏
Julia

Emmy, along with her two sisters, Rose and Raina, and her Momma, Sherry, were surrendered to Almost Home Foster & Rescue. A local breeder is closing his doors and has asked for our help in finding homes for those remaining at his facility. We don’t say “no” to those needing help in our own backyard.

Emmy is a 17-week-old Cavapoo. Momma is a King Cavalier Spaniel & Toy Poodle mix. Emmy’s poppa is a purebred Toy Poodle. Emmy’s adult weight is estimated at 17-24 pounds. Because Emmy and her sisters are too young to spay currently, they are eligible for our “Foster to Adopt” Program. Full transfer of ownership will occur upon certification of spay; approximately 7-9 months of age.

Emmy was the first to leave the AHFK “next.” We had received multiple applications for the Cavapoos that we had previously brought into rescue, and working with these families, we offered to continue the adoption process with Emmy, Rose, and Raina. Dede’s application was at the top of the pile.

Dede’s has a large, securely fenced backyard and gated deck area. Dede is a stay-at-home pet parent and has frequent visits from her grandchildren. There is also another puppy and senior dog in the home. Emmy will never be alone and will always have company. She has already begun to puppy-play and spends hours with her fur-siblings in the backyard.

Thank you, Dede, for opening your heart and home to Emmy. Thank you for giving her the home and family that she deserves.

In May of this year, it was witnessed that Ricky, then called Whiskey, was tossed from a vehicle. The Good Samaritan that witnessed this horrific event, scooped him up and surrendered him to Gratitude Farms of East Bethel. Because of the nature of which Ricky was abandoned, the local authorities were called, and the request went out via social media to find his owners and answer a few simple questions. Did they dispose of their dog in this manner? Was he stolen? And, Why? Just WHY?

Almost Home Foster & Rescue had reached out to Gratitude Farms and inquired if there as a microchip that would link back to our rescue. We had adopted quite a few Beagles out in that area. There was no chip. We extended the offer to help if they should need. Our offer was accepted, and I drove to East Bethel to pick Ricky up.

The owner had come forward to reclaim his dog. He had seen the negative comments and wanted to make all of this go away. The Sherrif however, had an ultimatum for him, Surrender the dog to Gratitude Farms, or Pay the fines and charges affiliated with that of an Animal Cruelty Offense. He surrendered his dog. Why? – Because his 8-year-old son had difficulty leash walking him. So, instead of teaching his child and training his dog – he got rid of the dog.

Ricky suffered some anxiety due to the abandonment. He was very vocal when left alone, or in a crate. Ricky needed a human…he had one before and couldn’t understand where they were. We had inquiries and applications, but none could provide the security and companionship that Ricky needed. This is, until we received an application from Matt.

Matt is a stay-at-home pet dad. His home sits on lake front property in Maine. His backyard is a Beagle’s dream of forest and hiking trails. Ricky hit the all-time family exceptional’ with Matt. We have already received raving comments from Matt and how Ricky has settled in to his new home and surroundings.

Thank you, Matt, for giving Ricky everything that he deserves and needs. Thank you for being his family. Heart hugs!

Every so often there is a furbaby that crosses our threshold at Almost Home Foster & Rescue, and one knows that this will be a tough one to let go. Maake was that furbaby. He came to us by way of Oklahoma. After being tormented and abused by a youngster, Maake threw his head in the direction of the child as a warning. He didn’t bite. He didn’t nip. But, the family, after beating the holy terror out of him, marched him to the vet and demanded that he be euthanized. Maake was so incredibly sore that one could not touch his back, his back end, his ribs, or his collar area. This little guy was a mess.

The vet had the family surrender him over to him. He then called an Almost Home Foster & Rescue foster and asked if we could take him and get him out of Oklahoma. We did. It took Maake a couple of weeks to heal and allow us to touch him. But, for all the abuse that he had endured, Maake was quick to trust those with a soft hand. And one that offered “cookies” as a treat.

When the adoption application came through for Maake we were diligent in processing it, we scrutinized it, we looked for every reason not to approve it. We questioned the family. We spent more time with them at the meet and greet that they almost had to offer us lunch. They were perfect…THEY WERE PERFECT!

John and Julia, we are so incredibly grateful for giving Maake, nka Max the perfect home, the perfect family, the perfect environment, one without triggers and fear. Thank you for opening your hearts and home to this little boy. WE are furever grateful

Lucky…Lucky in Love, Lucky 7, “As Luck would have it…” Lucky and his fur-sister Ringo were surrendered to AHFK Foster Momma Felicia Stilley of Oklahoma. Lucky’s momma was entering hospice care with severe dementia and could no longer care for her furbabies, and the family didn’t want them either. It was suspected through a caretaker that the animals were abused, severely; by whom, we were not told. Felicia picked up the two and took them home, vetted them and sent Almost Home Foster & Rescue a message.

“I have three Chihuahuas. Can you take them?”

We said, “Yes.”

We met in Kansas City…Well, the three Chihuahuas were anything but, but then, Felicia already knew that as the grin on her face gave her away. Lucky is a Terrier, close enough. He was overweight and suffered from “episodes” not really a full-blown seizure, as he didn’t lose consciousness, but something similar. He was prescribed phenobarbital; 22.5mgs/twice daily.

Upon arrival in Minnesota, Lucky saw our Veterinarian of Record. He suggested reducing the meds. Lucky was put on 30mg once daily…at nighttime. The difference was amazing. More energy, playful, and has a spring in his step.

Lucky had been with us for 6 months and it had been decided that Lucky would probably spend his days here. He had adapted well to being one of our “kitchen” dogs…treated like our resident dog. He slept in our beds, cuddling with us as we watched TV. But then…an adoption application came through for him. And as Ron stated in the application, “I take anti-seizure meds also.”

Lucky, whether luck or fate or destiny, Lucky found the PERFECT home and family. Thank you, Ron and Mary, for giving this boy the perfect life. You have made our hearts happy.

Bolt was surrendered to Lisa Dawn Hatfield of West Virginia. His owner had a terminal medical condition, and she was no longer able to care for Bolt. She entrusted Bolt to Lisa. Lisa found what she thought was a nurturing home and family, however, Bolt was given away to another family member. He was attacked by other dogs, nearly killing him. Lisa, once again, rescued him. He was covered in fleas and scabs and had lost a great deal of hair and weight. To ensure his safety and health, Bolt remained with Lisa. She knew, however, that he needed a home and family of his own. She turned to Cliff Bethke to help her find a rescue to take him.

Almost Home Foster & Rescue had a transport leaving West Virginia within the week. We were able to get Bolt a Health Certificate, finalize his vetting and get him on board. Bolt arrived with Elmer T and George on September 29th.

Just two weeks later we had an application for Bolt. Carole, an AHFK alumni adopter, had recently lost her hound dog Duke and was looking for another family member to fill the void. Just three years prior, Carole had adopted Kassie, and Maltese/Chihuahua from AHFK.

We checked in on Bolt and his new family a week later.

“Hi Dianne, Bolt made himself right at home. He had a little separation anxiety initially but is getting more comfortable and assertive every day. Still need the diapers but that should improve.

He will be a handful with all his energy, but he is a wonderful dog who has won my heart.”

Carole

Thank you, Carole, for opening your heart and home to Bolt. Thank your for giving him the family that he deserves.

24/10/2024

The State Transport Pages, located on Facebook, require a rescue to be affiliated with the animal that is being moved across state lines. The rescue assumes the responsibility of said animal, and the guarantee to “intake” the animal should the adoption, transfer, health of the animal be comprised. This month, Almost Home Foster MN License assumed that role, ensuring Tucker could move from one state to another, from one family member to another, safely, securely, and with back-up for his well-being.

Tucker’s family lived in the Cheyenne WY area. They were moving to North Carolina to be closer to family. Tucker’s mom investigated multiple “paid transports” for Tucker. The cost was overwhelming, and the reviews of others were horrid. An ache in heart developed and she was at a loss as to how to keep Tucker safe as he travelled across the country.

Through the grapevine, they were directed at Michelle Zdybicki. Through conversation, reassurances and lots of faith, Tucker was surrendered to AHFK and it is here that he was able to begin his journey East…to family and to his new home. Mom and Pop would be following soon.

Thank you to Michelle Zdybicki and all the dedicated drivers and overnighters who aided in getting this boy back East to family where he will be joined by his human parents soon.

This is an incredible village and community, one that we at Almost Home Foster & Rescue; MN License 132328 are extremely proud to be a part of.

This story is worth repeating, as another Hound Dog, George Mason is now safe and secure, loved and healthy.

Once upon a time…Yepper, that is how long Pamela Rosenthal and me have been in cahoots – been acquaintances, fought for animal rights, health, and welfare, and worked together in rescue.

Our first encounter was through the Beagle Freedom Project; Campaign Identity Program. Together, with hundreds of others, we advocated for the information and then the release of the Beagles and Hounds that were being used for laboratory testing and experimentation in the colleges and universities throughout the US. We found however, that typically we were too late, we were advocating for a Beagle that had already been euthanized. That is when, with the help of others; Rebecca Neff Pugh, Karen Musselman Sellner, Kelly Mackey, Patti and Rick Richardson, Erica Leary, Sarah Mews, and many others, formed a tight-knit bond, pulling dogs from shelters and pounds throughout the south and getting them to Minnesota to be vetted and readied for transport to California…to Rescue for North Bay Beagles, a Beagle rescue founded and operated by Pamela Rosenthal. Hundreds of Beagles and Beagle-mixes were saved using this network of individuals.

In January of 2016 Pamela asked me to be the Intake Coordinator for her rescue. We had another 2.5 years of pulling and saving Beagles from the south. Then, due to health-related issues, Pamela was not able to continue. Almost Home Foster Kennels applied for, and obtained a license and 501c3 status, changing our role from foster to rescue.

Although unable to continue with the full aspect of rescue, Pamela and Ed still stay involved. Pamela has always had a love for the senior hound. Pamela contacted Almost Home Foster in September and asked if we could pull and set up transport for a Senior Hound in Amelia County Virginia. With the help of Gail Asher, Mike Dunlow of Dunlow's DogHouse, LLC, Michelle Zdybicki and all of the dedicated, volunteer drivers, George Mason made his way out of Amelia County Virginia, travelling, literally across the USA to Corvallis Oregon.

Pamela and Ed, thank you for your never-ending commitment to save those that have been neglected, abused, and sometimes, the forgotten. Thank you for giving this boy a second chance at life.

Heart Hugs always!

Elmer T was welcomed into Almost Home Foster & Rescue by way of Nicholas County Animal Shelter in Summersville WV. Amber and Logan Gregory agreed to foster Elmer for our rescue until we had room to bring him in. That day finally arrived and Elmer, together with Bolt, also from WV were transported to Minnesota.

Elmer, a young, energetic Beagle, try as he might, could not find his niche here. There were many other fosters to play with. Large, securely fenced yards and activities to keep him busy, but he bayed and cried...alot. I contacted Terri Morris, also a foster momma for AHFK, who initially pulled Elmer on our behalf and discussed how unhappy he was, he just couldn't settle in and feel, "at home." She offered to talk to Amber about his attitude.

This was news to Amber and, "Could we send him back? Could we adopt Elmer? He did so well here. He and Chloe...."

Chloe! This missing puzzle piece. Elmer was missing Chloe!

So, back to West Virginia, back to his roots Elmer went, and AHFK recorded another Foster Fail into our Adoption Books.

Thank you Amber and Logan for always being there. Thank you for giving this guy his Chloe back, for giving him the family and home that he deserves. We are furever grateful.
