Cassowaries eggshell fragments found at two prehistoric sites in Papua New Guinea suggest that humans may have been farming Cassowaries as early as as early as 18,000 years ago. They are ancient bird's that began to evolve around 60 Billion years ago, during the Cretaceous period, when non avain dinosaurs were the dominant Animal's life on earth.
They are 3rd largest and 2nd heaviest bird's in the world
They belong to Australia and dispersed to new Guinea during the Pleistocene. Would mean CASUARIUS CASUARIUS ( Southern Cassowary)
Is the oldest Cassowary Species.
IDENTIFICATION MALE, FEMALE & BREEDING
Visually it's difficult but we can try because female is having brighter colour, she is having bigger casque competitive male her casque size is 5.1 to 6 inches male are having less than female, female weight is around or up to 67Kg and male weight should be 40 to 45Kg.
Female is bigger in size and males are slightly small.
Cassowary is a solitary Bird, they come close only for mating usually it starts in MAY & JUNE To October.
Cassowary don't form permanent bond or mate for life, and the female mate with several male's in seasons, in doing so, the female bird will produce several nests, laying eggs between 3-5 By different Father's.
Male Cassowaries are going to taking care of eggs like incubation and hatching he also going to raise chick, in between this process female will just lay eggs and leave it with male.
The incubation period is around 50 days, and after that male Live with chicks more than 9Months for raising them, the size of Egg is 5Inches and weight of egg is 650GRMS (23OUNCE)
