*Swipe to see p**p picsâ˜ș*
This sweet guy, Twist, had wild “runs” for 10 days and it was only getting worse until we gave him Belly Blend. I was out of my personal stash of Belly Blend(ooops!) but I had some horse probiotic powder in my feed bins so figured I’d give it a try. We did 8 days of the probiotics with exactly 0 positive change(it actually got worse), however after 12 & 24 hours of Belly Blend (I didn’t check his fresh p**ps in the AM when I fed, but did again that afternoon) he has formed, healthy p**ps, with only a little liquid run off at the start. This has improved with every fresh p**p and I have no doubts it’ll be cleared up completely over the next few days. To be completely honest, I wasn’t SURE it would help because it was so severe, and especially not that fast, but I love it when our products prove themselves like this!🎉đŸ„č

*** THE IMPORTANCE OF AD LIB FORAGE ***

All of my horses have haylage left in their stables when they are fed at 6.30/7am, having been in since 4pm (in the winter).

It is so important that your horse doesn’t stand for hours and hours with nothing to eat. This increases the risk of colic, ulcers, and boredom. It also increases the risk of them choking on their breakfast, as well as potentially very slightly increasing the risk of laminitis, if they subsequently go out when they are very hungry, and pig out on good grass.

I do completely appreciate that lots of horses are very overweight, and that it’s just not possible to give them ab lib sweet haylage/hay for 15 hours a day. I have actually noticed that the more hay you give a horse, the lower the chance of them eating it all. Harry, for example, would clear a haylage net in an hour. He now has 2-3 huge nets overnight, and plenty left the next morning. Again, this may not work for every horse.

If you do have to limit forage, then try soaking hay, and giving more of it. If you can’t give ad lib forage, due to weight/laminitis issues, then you can’t
.but if your horse is a good weight, then ideally, he/she should have some hay left in the morning.

NB This is not a debate about whether or not horses should or shouldn’t be stabled, it is to advise that ideally, in an active horse that is not overweight, it is sensible to ensure your horse has some hay/haylage/grass, 24 hours a day.

This girl is no stranger to us here, but we have shifted her sponsorship from to Calibre this year to better suit the needs of her new horse, Solo. Welcome to Team Calibre, !

“Hi ! My name is Adrianna Gussen, and I’m a barrel racer. I was born and raised in Chilliwack BC, and I’ve been riding since I was about 5.  I started to compete more seriously in barrel racing in 2018. I always strive to have happy and healthy horses while competing. So Calibre Equines supplements became a staple part of my feeding routine. My go to’s are Belly Blend and Fresh Airways. Not only is this helping my horses maintain a happy gut, but it’s also insuring my horse’s airways are feeling their best whether we’re competing or just riding at home.

My main mount for this year is Pistol Dashin Horton (Solo). My other horse Gunnar, is now also coming back to competing slowly. So I occasionally may run two horses this season.”

Welcome back for a third year
.salisbury!!

“My name is Vanessa Salisbury, I have rode horses most of my life, starting in English/Western Pleasure then moving into Rodeo and Barrel Racing when I was a teenager. I now live in Central Alberta and have the pleasure of riding and training every day. Focusing mostly on Futurity & Derby horses and recently filling my permit in the CPRA. Some of my main mounts include “Mito Judge Jaxon” and “Judge Austin”. I feel very fortunate to be apart of the Calibre Equine team for another year as I find the products to be a staple in keeping my horses healthy and happy throughout the season.”

Next up, welcome Lucy Miller-Hogg & her lovely group of horses!

“My name is Lucy Miller-Hogg,
I'm an eighteen year old three-day event rider originally from the Sunshine Coast in BC, where our families 5 acre hobby farm is. I'm currently living in Chase BC working for Ali and Nick Holmes-Smith as a rider/groom. My overall goal is to someday make it to the top level of the sport, but for now I'm enjoying the process along the way.
I've ridden up to the preliminary level in eventing on a Clydesdale cross that I trained up from a three year old. She taught me a lot about the importance of a good fitness plan and really showed me how amazing horses can be if you believe in them.

I have two horses currently, my main one “Moose,” is a 17.1-hand thoroughbred that retired off the track as a 4-year-old in 2020. 2022 was his first season out and he blew me away, we competed at local events here in BC and a few events in the USA ending the season novice with qualifiers to move up to training level in eventing. I have some big goals for Moose this coming season, but it's most important to me that he's confident and happy, so we’ll just see what happens!

My other horse is “Diva,” she's a 6-year-old
16.1 hand Canadian warmblood that I bought completely unhandled at the beginning of 2022 from a field in Saskatchewan. It's been a long year getting her used to being handled and getting her to like people, but she's been such a rewarding mare to work with (I've also had a lot of help along the way with various trainers). She is now going walk/trot/canter and we're getting excited about her future as an event horse!

I like to keep Calibre Equine naturals in my feed program because it's a clean, all natural product with no fillers that my horses love to eat. it's also a local BC small business, which is great to support. I started Moose on Calibre’s Fresh Airways blend after I noticed that the dust from all the shows/trailering was having an effect on him and I've noticed a huge difference in his breathing.

I'm super excited and grateful to be apart of the Calibre Equine Naturals team for 2023!”

We are SO excited to announce our 2023 Sponsored Rider line up!
This girl needs no introduction, but we are so proud to welcome Justine Elliott to our team. We are thrilled you decided to try Blondy on our products and even more thrilled that you love them!
“My name is Justine Elliott, I’m 20 years old and live in Lacombe, Alberta. I grew up around horses my entire life being a horse trainer's daughter. I’ve been barrel racing for quite a few years but only started going pro in 2018. In my High School Rodeo days, I showed in the cutting and cowhorse along with pole bending and goat tying. Blondy has been my main mount through it all, including my early years of High School Rodeo being my barrel and pole horse. She’s carried me to four consecutive Canadian Finals Rodeos, two Calgary Stampedes and a Canadian Championship in 2021. Blondy has also been the CPRA’s Horse With the Most Heart for two years and brought us to being season leaders in the CPRA in 2019 and 2021. I’m super excited to be a part of the Calibre Equine team in 2023 and can’t wait to see its benefits in my horses!”

Sometimes it's not ulcers.

Sometimes it's not kissing spine.

Sometimes it's not EPM.

Sometimes it's not the bit.

Sometimes it's not the saddle.

Sometimes it's not the trainer.

Sometimes it's the fact you're a crazy human who continues to anthropomorphise these behaviours and insist that it couldn’t possibly be a pain related issue or anything related to you.

Sometimes it’s the fact that your horse was designed for the purpose of moving 20+ kilometres per day with their head down grazing and is now confined to a box stall and fed up on high energy grain whilst going without hay for hours each day, creating a sore tummy and a greater likelihood of having ulcers as a domestic horse than not in addition to being chronically understimulated and largely unable to exercise unless they have a human on their back playing puppeteer.

Sometimes it's the fact that you dress your horse in a variety of equipment with the purpose of restricting the movement of their mouth (flash) or creating more leverage for you to be able to ride and direct them easier by using a number of different harsher bits or gadgets like draw reins. This effectively removes any ability for quiet communication, so when your horse can’t take it anymore, they must get louder.

Sometimes it’s the fact that way too many unqualified trainers play saddle fitter and tell students their tack fits when it actually does not.

Sometimes it's the fact that your horse absolutely adores running away from you because it is one of the few things that brings them relief from the otherwise high pressure, high stress lifestyle that can be rides, especially when their communication of stress and/or discomfort is being labelled as personality and otherwise viewed through an anthropomorphic lens.

Sometimes it's the fact that you think your horse will wait for you while you mount or dismount but your horse is chronically stressed and cannot fathom the idea of standing still for a couple of seconds while they’re in fight or flight mode so they instead use the opportunity for relief by moving.

Sometimes it's the fact that the majority of the stress and avoidance behaviours we see ARE correlated with mental and/or physical discomfort and have shown consistent correlation in extensive equine behaviours studies.

Sometimes it’s the fact that we have a 70-90% rate of stomach ulceration in domesticated horses so your horse is more likely to have them than not.

Sometimes, the issue is that we as humans are really great at denying anything that would push us to self reflect and see the gravity of what is an industry wide issue of ignoring the horse and then when they finally get loud so we have to notice, blaming their loud behaviours once again on them.

Horses do not lie, their behaviour is honest. Humans, on the other hand, DO lie. Especially to themselves. To protect from having to sit information that is hard to hear.

It’s taking the easy way out to anthropomorphise your horse. But, I can promise you that if you actually put the time, money and belief into diagnostic work, you will have a very good chance of finding out what physical issue is causing their behaviour. Many who claim it can’t be pain related just don’t actually put the work in to find out because the real truth is often expensive and could be painful. For years, I avoided the truth for the same reason, all without knowing that was why.

If you learn to look for the reason behind their unwanted behaviour instead of just looking at the behaviour at face value, you also may find what situations, equipment and other factors contribute to it.

If you consider ruling out pain first and honestly looking at your horse’s living situation from a welfare standpoint, you may just realize how often pain and inadequate management cause behavioural issues, because these factors are behind the vast majority of issues we run into with horses.

After all, I thought it was “never the horse’s fault” or are we just saying that to sound good?

Chaste Tree Berries are well known in aiding mares (and women) with regulating hormones. This magical little berry can also help with reducing stress hormones, improving liver function, reducing inflammation, aiding in horses with cushings disease, and even has a calming effect on stallions and geldings.
A little downside to Chaste Tree Berries: they’re little, hard, bitter, easy to fall to the bottom of a bag and the feed bucket, and don’t mix well with feed & other supplements.
We buy our dried berries whole, and grind them ourselves, to ensure the product is excellent, and to make sure those picky horses don’t push the little berries away when they’re eating.
Chaste Tree Berries are a key ingredient in our Twisted Sister supplement, which has been a game changer for so many mare owners! When mixed together with the rest of the ingredients in Twisted Sister, this is a tasty, palatable addition to every mares feed program đŸ€©
