I just happened to snap this adorable photo of Oso this evening and I thought it was a good opportunity to share some news.

Although it makes us sad, we will not be having anymore puppies with our current dogs. Oso, Maple and Roma are now retired from breeding.

We chose not to breed Nairobi due to multiple emotionally traumatic events in her young life. We know that big traumas can potentially alter brain chemistry and we didn't want to risk passing any uneasy emotions down as generational trauma to future puppies. Mental health standards for breeding are just as important as physical health standards.

We've put in a lot of training with her and she's thriving, but we didn't want to take a chance on poorer quality offspring.

We'd love to pickup breeding again in the future (5+ years down the road), but right now we're focusing on giving back to our current pack for all that they have given us and ensuring the rest of their lives are of impeccable quality.

We're so grateful for everyone that has supported our puppies and provides them with loving and caring homes.

-- With Big Paws and wet noses, we wish you and your furballs all the best! 🐾💜🐾

Here's a few recent Nairobi pictures 🐾. Everyone has had their puppies for at least a week now, how are they all settling in?

This page will be far less active now that the puppies have gone to their homes, but I'll still share occasional photos and updates on here.

New Owners, the Big Paws Training Discussion group is where most of the posting will be now, if you haven't already joined, please do.

One of my favorite socializing techniques is to drive to different places and just sit in the car with the window down, observing. This allows for car ride practice, exposure to different sights, smells and sounds, and the occasional meeting of intrigued humans depending on where you are.

Here Nairobi and I are sitting in a Target parking lot, just taking in the environment in a non-threatening way.

Moose got picked up this morning. Dottie and Copper leave this evening.

Reminder: be loving and gentle with your puppies. Your heart is bursting with love for them, but they're going through a huge change by leaving behind their siblings and parents. Their comfort zone is disappearing and it will take them a while to find solace in your company and home.
They are huge puppies, but don't let their size take away from the fact that they're still babies exploring everything for the first time. ❤️🐾

In fact, pick up day is almost here.

New owners, I recommend writing down all your questions so we can discuss them at pick up time. (Hint, if you don't write them down you usually get overwhelmed by puppy cuteness and forget that you had any questions at all).

Let's talk GROOMING!

The puppies have been practicing grooming exercises, but last night was the big test. Everyone got their nails trimmed! I'm happy to report that it went well. A few puppies were still a little nervous of being up high, but they all did great with being restrained and having their paws and toes manipulated.

Here's a few things to keep in mind to be sure your pup excels in this department:

🫧 Practice having them be up on a table. Make sure the table is sturdy and large enough to support them. When you groom at home you may not always have them on a table, but when they go to the vet or the groomer they will be up on a table for an exam or grooming. Practicing at home, makes them more successful at those appointments.

🫧 Don't attempt things like nail clipping, ear cleaning or teeth brushing by yourself, in the beginning. While your puppy is still learning what is the appropriate behavior during these activities, it is very wise to have a second person help you. One person can secure and restrain the puppy while the other person does the grooming deed. Typically we have the security person also hold the paw and prepare the nail or flip the ear and massage the ear. If you're the one restraining the puppy, your priorities are to hold them in a secure but calm manner, be their source of comfort and keep their paw steady for the nail clipper person to do their thing.
I like to hold one arm over their back and under their abdomen for a secure but gentle grip. Then with my other hand I'll hold whichever paw or ear is being worked on. If they were having their teeth brushed instead, my free hand could help support their muzzle.

🫧 When holding a leg/paw for nail clipping, be sure to keep their limb lower than their hip/elbow joints. You don't want to raise their leg too high and make them uncomfortable.

🫧 For tasks like this that require long term cooperation, I like to use a spatula with either peanut butter, pumpkin puree or plain yogurt on it.
Once they are on the table, they get the spatula. You can either hold it in front of them during the grooming or take breaks from the grooming and give them rewards. You could also use a plate if you wanted them to have full access to the reward the whole time. I personally prefer the spatula for training these activities because eventually I want them to be able to behave for the grooming activities and only get their reward at the end, but it takes a lot of approximations to build to that point.

🫧 You can "practice" the activities of grooming by yourself and without the table, to help make the actual process easier. Also, you'll eventually be able to do these things solo, but in the beginning it's best to have a second person to help things go smoothly and safely.
To practice the grooming activities break down each thing into smaller things. Practice manipulating and holding their paws and toes. Associate the grooming tools with rewards and good things. Teach them to target on a mat or other object and then use that during object to target them in place during grooming sessions. Play with their ears and mouth/teeth. Practice brushing them all over with your hand and soft brushes before using combs or hard brushes.

🫧 Schedule a training grooming appointment for around 4-5 months old, your groomer will thank you for starting them young.

As always, ask me any questions you might have!

Puppies are not naturally going to enjoy car rides. It's a skill we have to work on. Here are some things you can do to help your puppy get comfortable with transportation:
🔸 Drive carefully; make your turns and stops slower and more gradual than normal.
🔸 Don't let them sit on your lap if you're driving.
🔸 Take them on short trips; even just a few miles.
🔸 Bring a long another dog that is comfortable in the car. (Don't bring a long a companion that is nervous in cars).
🔸 Practice hanging out in the car when it's parked, you don't always have to drive them somewhere to help them get used to the car.
🔸 Give them a safe space to lay in the car to feel safe.
