In light of the upcoming fall season and subsequent holidays, if looking for a new furry friend, please consider checking out your local animal shelter or rescue.

If a new friend isn't on the horizon, but the desire to donate to a good cause is, then please consider donating to a local shelter.

Every time rescue is asked to take an owner surrender- we have to somehow make room on our little raft for that dog. When an owner says stuff like “I don’t have time to give them the best life” or “I have to move” or “they have too much anxiety” it really falls flat because that means if we bring them on the raft, another dog out there in the freezing water gets to die.

Every day in rescue we adjudicate life and death by gate keeping who can get on the boat.

Rescues and shelters are the tiny rescue boats.

The ship is our community at large.

The iceberg is comprised of puppy mills, careless owners, backyard breeders, and a$$hats who won’t spay/neuter.

They’ve done it again! The Baltimore Orioles saw that BARCS was in a state of emergency again this week and invited our BFF Adoption Waggin' to the game on Sunday! Catch us in Maryland Square inside Camden Yards (located near Gate A) beginning at 10:30 a.m. All adoption fees are waived! Fans with game tickets who adopt an animal can pick up their pet after the game.

***BARCS is out of space. Since our SOS post earlier this week, we took in ANOTHER 220 homeless and lost animals. Our situation remains critical and dogs in our shelter are at risk. Without the help of our community and peers, our team will be forced to make impossible choices.

Adoption fees are waived at the shelter and all offsite events through the weekend. Please consider adopting, fostering or helping to spread the word.

Please....if you aren't in a position to adopt, consider fostering. Even if it's a week or holiday weekend, getting animals out of the shelter for a break can be huge for them! It also gives the shelters an idea of how a dog may truly be in a home.

THIS is why we say fostering helps us save lives. Without a foster, there would be no way for us to know Silver Dollar’s true personality—which is a total 180 from who she was at BARCS.

“Silver Dollar is doing exceptionally well in her foster home and it’s only day 2! She was growly and reactive in her kennel—not showing well at all for visiting adopters. We moved her to an office in the shelter, where she was doing better, but still a bit uneasy. Once we found a foster, She immediately started thriving! She went to a local pup-friendly restaurant and was so friendly with everyone. ☺️ She’s a very different dog than what we saw in the shelter environment!”

We see this kind of thing happen a lot—not all dogs are mentally resilient enough to handle huge changes in their lives, like losing their family and only home they’ve ever known. Suddenly they are in a loud place, with a lot of unfamiliar smells and faces. We can’t blame them for being upset and totally “different dogs.”

Have you ever considered fostering? Not only does BARCS need you, dogs like Silver Dollar NEED you. Fostering is a literal lifeline.

The bugs are coming! The bugs are coming! While many insects are helpful, others can cause distress or pass disease to you and your pets. Consider having some of these plants around to keep your garden and your pets from being bugged by unwelcome pests.

With the extreme remps and wind chills, please keep this info on hand!

If you are not able to safely rescue an animal, or are unable to stop, etc please call your local animal control and provide as much detail as you can.

If you do find one and have the ability to bring the animal in and provide a temporary foster, please contact your local AC and leave a found report. Get the animal checked for a microchip (any local vet will do this for free).

Just a friendly reminder!

Please watch out for your pets when in this killer heat!
Older dogs are more at risk…
Overweight dogs are more at risk…
Short nosed dogs like bulldogs, pugs, frenchies are more at risk…
Remember, they can’t sweat like humans can! They can’t manage their body temperature as efficiently as we can.
