My goals are to help others with their horses, using scientifically supported information. My story - Growing up in a rural area of Queensland, I learned early on that horses are my life's passion. My journey began in pony club, a small dabble in show jumping and a few local gymkhana's, before I was caught by the rodeo bug. Barrel racing all over Queensland with my Dad and our horses, I discovered

a lack in evidence-based information and technology for performance horses outside of the south-east corner. On graduation of high school I began studying a bachelor of equine science that has only driven me to learn more and more. My goal is offer science-based supportive services to rural horse enthusiasts and performance horses, bridging the gap to country areas.

ANYONE ELSE FED UP WITH MISLEADING ADVERTS?

"Here at Feedmark we're big on HONESTY". Really? Let's have a look at that statement and Feedmark's recent Facebook post below.

IS IT HONEST to selectively compare ingredients to show yours as the best when a number of other companies have MORE active ingredients - you just don't include them as then yours would not be "top"? NO!

IS IT HONEST to try and pass off plant Omega 3 as being equivalent in terms of joint health to marine Omega 3 - there is actually no comparision! Marine is absolutely proven to be signficantly more effective. Its just that plant is much much cheaper? NO!

IS IT HONEST to use plain, cheap ascorbic acid which is unstable and poorly absorbed by horses and compare it to companies that use more stable, bioavailable, effective and expensive forms of Vitamin C such as ascorybyl palmitate or ascorbyl monophosphate or calcium ascorbate? NO!

IS IT HONEST to just list "Boswellia 12,000mg" (actually 12g) when the key information here is NOT the amount of "Boswellia" but the amount of Boswellic acid? NO.

IS IT HONEST to claim that only glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and HA are the only "4 research proven key ingredients" when signficant numbers of publications also demonstrate efficacy for marine Omega 3, Vitamin C, green lipped mussel and collagen peptides, to name just a few? NO!

IS IT HONEST to claim yours is the "probably the best" when you have no clinical trials and other companies do? NO!

Bottom line. Smoke and mirrors! "Bullsh1t Baffles Brains"..... To talk or write absolute nonsense but do so with such conviction everyone comes to believe it unquestioningly.

And for those people screaming at their phones saying "well, he would say that, he owns a supplement company", you are at least 10 years out of date! I founded a supplement company 24 years ago. I sold it over 10 years ago.

With show season just about here (in CQ anyway!) let's remember that there are more long term health issues associated with obesity in horses, than there are from malnutrition!
A fat horse does not equal a healthy horse.

For any help with horses this show season, please send an email or PM 🐴

Something I always do when looking at a horse is assess their body language and behaviour for signs of discomfort, pain and anxiety.
This new publication is a great read and great to keep on hand if you own a horse.
The horse can tell us so much about themselves, if only we are able to listen.

NEW BEHAVIOUR ETHOGRAM CAN HELP YOU RECOGNISE WHEN YOUR HORSE IS EXPERIENCING DISCOMFORT OR PAIN

Pain and discomfort behaviour in horses can be very subtle and can often go unrecognised by horse owners, equine professionals, vets and caregivers.

Catherine Torcivia and Sue McDonnell – from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine – have just published a new ethogram (catalogue) of equine pain and discomfort behaviours based on decades spent evaluating the behaviour of both normal and physically uncomfortable horses at their referral hospital and within a research context.

The ethogram includes 64 specific discomfort behaviours in eight categories: posture and weight‐bearing; limb and body movements; head, neck, mouth, and lip movements; attention to area; ear and tail movements; overall demeanor; altered eating or drinking; and vocalisations/audible sounds.

The researchers believe that the ethogram is a relatively complete catalogue of behaviours that could be used as a reference to recognise discomfort in horses, both for general husbandry and for clinical veterinary assessments.

The team said “When assessing discomfort in horses, it is important to observe remotely. Regardless of how well‐trained a caretaker may be in behavior observation, if discomfort behavior is interrupted by their presence, information regarding the horse’s condition is lost."

The behaviours listed are based on thousands of hours of study and each behaviour has been assessed repeatedly. When watching film of a horse to assess their comfort level, the team considered the first occurrence of a potential discomfort behaviour as an indicator to continue watching for any repetitions. “We would not consider a single occurrence of any one behavior to be conclusive evidence of discomfort.”

The team also stated that “Before making a judgment about the causes of a behavior, or what a specific behavior might indicate regarding discomfort, it is important to be sure that it was not an isolated event with an alternate explanation.”

If you see any of the behaviours catalogued in this study performed by your own horse (or indeed any horse you know) do call a vet to give them a thorough check over.

This is a truly fantastic resource for every horse owner, equine professional or caregiver. There have been some wonderful studies in the last few years looking at the body language and behaviour of equines in pain and now this comprehensive catalogue gives us yet more valuable information to further the welfare of horses worldwide.

The paper is free to access and shows the full catalogue of behaviours, each with an illustration and a link to one or more videos of the behaviour described.
