S**t walks among us!
Well done DMPD and Animal Services

Protecting families in our neighborhoods sometimes begins with protecting our pets.

The FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that research shows a well-documented link that animal cruelty is a predictive or co-occurring crime with violence against humans (including intimate partners, children, and elders) and is associated with other types of violent offenses.

Yesterday, our officers partnered with the Animal Rescue League in an animal abuse investigation. Two pets were rescued from a dangerous situation, and 32-year-old Marcos Antonio Valadez was charged with one count of Animal Abuse.

JIMMY UPDATE: In partnership with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, the ARL is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) involved with the emaciated dog found in Indianola who the ARL has named Jimmy. Anyone with info should contact Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at 515-223-1400 or submit tips at www.crimestoppersofcentraliowa.com.

Jimmy arrived emaciated, frail and urine-stained with almost no muscle. He has gained 23 pounds in our care (inset) and is slowly recovering, but he still has a long road ahead.

See the original story here: https://ow.ly/3kNt50ONqB7.

The ARL would like to extend a huge thank you to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office for using this reward in their investigation. We hope it will help lead to a quick resolution in this case.

KAL UPDATE: Alaxandria Byron, 26, of Des Moines, has been arrested and charged with 1 count of Animal Neglect – Death or Serious Injury in the case of Kal, a Great Dane found shut in a kennel with no food and water and suffering from severe emaciation. Kal continues to recover at the ARL under the close watch of our 2 ARL staff veterinarians and the rest of the ARL’s Miracle Medical Team.

ORIGINAL STORY

HELP NEEDED: He was trapped in a wire crate … and he was literally a skeleton.

That’s what our ARL Animal Services Officer found when responding to a tip about a dog in need of urgent care at an apartment on Des Moines’ southeast side.

When the ARL officer arrived, she found the Great Dane named Kal shut in the crate with no food and no water – wasting away in an apartment where people were living. And no one was helping him.

When the ARL officer told the owner to let him out, he bolted for the bathroom and began guzzling water out of the toilet. He was so hungry and thirsty it was heartbreaking.

The ARL officer immediately transported Kal to our Emergency Care Team, who was waiting to treat him. The sight was shocking: We could see every bone in his body. He was so emaciated and dehydrated that even his head and eyes were sunken in. He had no muscle mass whatsoever and weighed just 44 pounds. He wouldn’t have survived much longer.

We immediately gave him food and water, and he ate and drank ravenously, pushing the bowl around the floor to get every last morsel. His dehydration was extreme, so we started him on IV fluids. He is now on a careful refeeding program to help him safely regain his weight. He is safe now, but he has a long road to recovery. The investigation into this case is ongoing.

Kal didn’t deserve to be treated like this. We can’t imagine how someone could stand by and watch him waste away. With your help, Kal will never again know the horrors he suffered, and once he is healed, he’ll have the chance to find the loving home he so deserves.

Just awful

HELP NEEDED: Amilia (pictured) and Scrappy were found trapped in their kennels inside an abandoned apartment on Des Moines’ south side, with no food or water. The situation was dire.

When the call came in to ARL Animal Services, an ARL officer rushed to bring them to our Miracle Medical Ward, where our veterinary team was waiting to provide critical care. What they saw was shocking: 2 large-breed dogs, both skin and bones, each weighing just 22 pounds.

The dogs both needed urgent care, but it was Amilia we were most concerned about. Not only was she emaciated and extremely dehydrated, she was showing signs of respiratory distress and shock. She could barely stand and was too weak to walk. Her condition was critical.

We X-rayed her immediately to make sure she wasn’t suffering from an obstruction in her digestive system. But X-rays showed there was NOTHING in her digestive system. Not in her stomach. Not in her intestines. She had been without food and water for so long that her body had literally nothing in it.

Our veterinarians said she would have died within hours if she had not been rescued. Even once she was in our care we weren’t sure she would survive.

We knew we had to rehydrate her as carefully and quickly as possible, so we started IV fluids and monitored her condition closely. In the first day in our care she gained 9 pounds – just from rehydration.

She and Scrappy are now on a special refeeding program to help them regain weight as safely as possible. For dogs with such severe emaciation, the initial period of reintroducing food is the most dangerous, so our team is monitoring them very closely. They have a long road ahead.

Your support today will help provide Amelia and Scrappy and others like them the lifesaving care and rehabilitation they need. Just use the button below, give on our website at https://bit.ly/3Hxsfz0 or give via Venmo -Iowa.

P.S.: Raevon Teel, 20, of Des Moines (pictured) has been arrested and charged with 2 counts of aggravated animal neglect in this case.

Nicely done Sheriff Davis, ARL and all the agencies that helped rescue all these dogs♥️

Daniel Gingerich was arrested!

IN THE NEWS: Daniel Gingerich, 26, whose Iowa puppy mill was shut down by federal authorities, is now facing criminal charges in Wayne County. Gingerich has been charged with 2 counts of animal neglect with serious injury or death, an aggravated misdemeanor, and 4 counts of animal neglect with injury, a serious misdemeanor. The charges carry a potential maximum jail time of 8 years. Gingerich turned himself in to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and was released on $1,000 bond.

The ARL assisted authorities last fall in a massive multi-day rescue operation to remove 514 dogs from multiple properties tied to Gingerich. Most of the dogs and puppies are now in loving homes, while a few are still in our care working their way toward adoption.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Wayne County Sheriff Keith Davis, who worked tirelessly with our cruelty intervention team for months on the Gingerich investigation and wouldn’t stop until he had everything he needed to file charges. Sheriff Davis also provided valuable support to our team during the rescue operation and when we were in the field.

REPULSIVE !!

ARRESTED: Quince DeWitt Spooner, 35, of Des Moines, was arrested and charged yesterday with 1 count of animal neglect in the horrific death of his dog, Yola.

Yola was dumped outside of a veterinary clinic, left in a basket on Christmas morning, emaciated, dehydrated, anemic, and soaked in her own urine. She was the most emaciated dog our ARL Animal Services officer had seen in 30 years on the job. Yola had obviously been suffering terribly for months. Because of previous donations made to our Miracle Medical Fund, we were able to try to give her a chance at recovery. We requested that the veterinarians at the clinic try to save her life. They gave her round-the-clock care for two days, but she was so frail and so weak, her body simply wasn’t able to respond to treatment. It soon became heartbreakingly clear that the most humane thing to do was to help end her suffering. Our Animal Services officer immediately drove across town to be with her as she took her final breaths.

Yola had suffered immensely at the hands of the person entrusted with her care. No dog should have to go through what she went through. Sadly, Yola was not able to be saved, but there are still ways you can help end animal suffering:

(1) Because of donations to our Miracle Medical Fund, we were able to give Yola the best fighting chance possible. You can give to our Miracle Medical Fund in her memory so that we can help future pets in dire medical need. Just go to https://bit.ly/3nLq3wL.

(2) Join our ARL Humane Action Network to be alerted to animal protection bills at the state capitol. You can also sign up to receive Action Alerts at https://bit.ly/3E2Ir9q to be notified to times when you can take action to make a difference for Iowa animals.

We’ll keep you posted on this heartbreaking case as it advances through the court system.
