🟰 Pole work 🟰
Pole work is a great activity to have in every tool 🔨 kit!
It helps with:
✨ joint flexion
✨ leg range of motions
✨ spinal flexion
✨ core engagement
Plus, it’s a fun activity for you horse 🤩
Check out Bob strutting his stuff over the poles today 😎 look at those hock angles 📐 and the increased stride length over the pole 📏 😮

Clipping season has begin 🍂 ✂️. The first 2 ponies to show off their new do’s!
Before picture of Bob (the bay) 🐴 - showing off his new flame 🔥 design with blended legs and a freshly pulled mane! 🤩
Then Skye (pretty roan pony) - the colour changing pony 🦄 with a pretty freehand bow 🎀 and love hearts 💕
I love my @Wahl Professional UK Lister Star clippers and Admire trimmers 👍
Even tried making my own stencils 😁

Billy bootcamp 🥊 day 3! Jumping! Billy is not particularly forward to a fence and likes to drift to the side and his young rider does a brilliant job with him but just needs a hand figuring out how best to jump him 🙌 he was super 🤩 some iffy moments 🫣 but he jumped brilliantly 👍

Been a while since I’ve ridden this boy - he’s been having too much fun with his teenage owner 🥳 but he’s on a bit of boot camp whilst they are on holiday 🏖️
Still some work to do but he tried hard 😮💨
Big day for Molly! Thanks Bec for your brilliant help! First day under saddle and rider- onwards & upwards 🙌
So this happened today! There’s a first time for everything 🥰 Whilst doing a routine treatment on Clyde, he decided to show the true extent of his relaxation 😌 and lay down and fell asleep 😴 there were even some 💤 coming from him 🥰 Then, when he’d relaxed enough, just got up ✅ I think it’s safe to say, he enjoyed today’s session 🤣
Featuring my epionyuk heat pad plus because it feels like October weather 💨 🌧️

Busy day at The Vale Show. It rained 🌧️, it blew a gale 💨 and it was freezing 🥶 but we still met lots of new potential clients and Flo did a brilliant job demonstrating some of the strengthening exercises I prescribe to canine clients 🐕
Thanks @r_jones.equine for coming with us and being a great ambassador for Buff- vet physio 🥰
Nubin enjoying the start of his treatment today. Nubin is 21 and gets seen frequently to help prolong his ridden career 🏇 by helping alleviate discomfort from arthritis 🦴
It’s so lovely to see such quick progress! 🤩 I last saw Solo 5 weeks ago- he had come home 🏠 from being out on loan and the owners had some concerns 🤔 about his behaviour. He moved onto a yard with a wonderful lady 🥰 who has worked incredibly with Solo and followed advice and guidance ✅.
Last time I saw Solo I couldn’t touch his chest - I was greeted with teeth 🦷 and striking front legs 🥊. This week, he was a completely different horse! Much happier, less stressed and a lot more comfortable! 😊
It’s so rewarding when owners/care givers work with equine professionals to help improve the horse 🐴 Solo is happy and is owner is starting to ride him, whilst still following strict advice!
.
Also to add, I was out in the rain with my new @equidryuk equimac that I got for my birthday - stayed so dry! Love it 🥰
‼️ Why does my horse do that during a physio session? ‼️
Licking 👅, chewing and yawning 🥱 are some of the behaviours your horse will display during a physio session.
‼️ But why? ‼️
Horses are a prey species 🐎 so live their sympathetic nervous system is often the primary system in use- this is responsible for fight 🥊 or flight 🦅. During this phase, digestion slows, and restorative metabolism slows down so the energy and blood 🩸 can be directed to the heart, lungs and running muscles 💪. This also causes the release of cortisol which causes stress 😬 resulting in tight muscles
During a physio session, the horse begins to relax 😌 and the parasympathetic nervous system takes over. This stimulates saliva production, digestion restarts and endorphins (happy hormones) are released. During the switch to the parasympathetic system, your horse will lick and chew 👅 due to saliva production, and yawn to indicate relaxation. Muscle tone decreases as well due to the decrease in cortisol.
Some signs are much more subtle - signs include, blinking, softened lines around the eyes 👀, nose and mouth, swallowing, licking, chewing, yawning 🥱 and a change in posture, as well as a reduced reaction to the environment 👍

Rest & digest 😴
Horses have 2 parts to their nervous system:
- the sympathetic ➡️ fight 🥊 or flight 🪽
- the parasympathetic ➡️ rest 😴 and digest
The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system and is responsible for a state of rest in horses. The vagus nerve passes under the saddle where the girth is done up.
In some cases, over tightening a girth can put pressure 🤯 on the vagus nerve and disrupt the signals ⚡️ to the body and the horse ‘faints’ - vasovagal syncope 😴
The video shows how pressure from compression massage 🙌 causes the horse to suddenly go into a very deep sleep, very quickly 💤 and almost fall over. As soon as the pressure is removed the horse wakes up!
‼️ To prevent this, avoid tightening the girth too much. Do it in stages - girth it up a little, allow the horse time to breath 💨, then tighten again, stretch the front legs 🦵like in the video, then tighten again 👍.
