“How come the gates never line up when you close ‘em?” “I dunno, man. I fix ‘em so they close like butter and I turn around and they broke again.”

This handsome devil found himself in quite a pickle last night. In his efforts to remove his muzzle, he managed to hook himself to the fence. Before you get out the pitchforks, he has equine Cushings disease. Think 1200 lb non compliant diabetic with a teeny tiny brain. We are fighting 24/7 to keep him healthy and provide a reasonable quality of life. The muzzle helps us manage his diet without having to lock him in a stall for the rest of his life. He’s fortunately been a dummy since he was a young lad, so he’s not unfamiliar with the results of his actions. I’d like to think he knows we’ll be along shortly to put things right.

Mental health is as real and relevant as your physical health. Healing takes time and progress can hurt as bad as breaking down scar tissue after surgery. Do the work. Keep going.

King doesn’t like when you play games while grooming. Although I will say he’s getting kinder in his nudging.

There’s a good chance no one else will enjoy this as much as I did, but Duke had a run in with a foul tempered beast just beyond the gate of the dry lot tonight.

There were quite a few comments about Duke being too thin and we were starving him with the grazing muzzle. He may not be ready for the green shavings in Louisville, but he ain’t starving.

Duke got a little frisky in the hot pen after dinner yesterday.

Duke hates the grazing muzzle, but he knows it is part of what has to happen for him to get out to his friends. Part of it is trust, but part of it is having the patience to let him make that connection. This is a twice a day routine we go through and I’ve made it a point to not get frustrated when he fights it. He understands this has to happen for him to get what he wants.
