Sweet Delphine colicked late Friday evening and, at the advice of our vet, was euthanized around 1am Sunday morning. We were told she had been a brood mare before going to auction. Whatever her life was before coming to us, it filled her with fear and anxiety. She'd flinch whenever you'd reach out to pet her, or try to give her treats. As a brood mare, she had received little to no training or handling. Not only was she constantly afraid, she had no idea what we were asking. We gave her all the space she requested and progressed on her schedule. She told us her boundaries, and we respected and defended them. She learned early that treats are awesome, and especially loved carrots and powdered donuts. No one could've blamed her if she had allowed the trauma and abuse to make her mean or aggressive. Instead, she became the sweetest horse I've ever known. When my day comes, I look forward to meeting her in a wide open pasture and scratching her bottom while we watch Gwinnie run around on healthy legs. #whatsyourstory #horse #rescue
Delphine colicked last night and the vet recommended keeping her isolated so we can see if she poops and control what she eats. She's up, so that's good. Her gut was quiet when the vet gave a listen, which is bad. She's got a dose of banamine in her, so she's not hurting, but I'm scared.
