Here are some tips for looking after your dog this winter:
Coats and jumpers can help keep short haired breeds like Greyhounds, warm in winter. Waterproof coats can help dogs with non-waterproof fur (like Poodles) stay warm in heavy rain.
Clean your dog’s paws after each walk – salt and grit put down to keep the paths safe can irritate your dog’s pads and cause problems if ingested when your dog licks his paws clean. Keep the fur between their toes short to help prevent ice-balls forming. If they are prone to this, special boots are available.
If it’s not safe for you to take your dog out for his usual walk, play games in the house instead to keep them exercised and amused. Even a tennis ball in an old sock can provide an fun toy. If your dog is less active over winter, cut back a bit on the amount of food you give them to help prevent them getting overweight. You could try a food-puzzle toy which provides stimulation as well as an easy way to cut back on food portions.
Ensure their bed is not in a draft and provide extra blankets or old towels for them to snuggle in if necessary. Also, make sure your dog always has access to fresh water as central heating can be quite drying (we take our coats off!).
