Top Tip of the Week - Rabbit 🐇

Rabbits are unique in that they are classified as hindgut fermenters, meaning they extract most of their nutrients from their food in their large intestine.

As a result, rabbits produce two types of faeces: hard pellets and soft, greenish-brown faeces called caecotrophs. Caecotrophs are essential to a rabbit's diet because they contain a high concentration of beneficial bacteria, protein, and other nutrients that the rabbit's body needs.
By eating their caecotrophs, rabbits can extract even more nutrients from their food and ensure that their bodies are getting all of the vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients they need. This behaviour may seem strange, but it's necessary for a rabbit's health.

Top Tip of the Week - Ferrets.🐾

Ferrets have a natural tendency to burrow and explore.
It's essential to create a safe and stimulating environment for them. One way to do this is by providing tunnels and hiding places within their living space. You can use ferret-specific tunnels or even repurpose PVC pipes or large cardboard tubes for them to play and explore in.
These tunnels fulfil their instinctual desire to burrow and offer exercise and mental stimulation.

Additionally, ferrets are known to be avid diggers. Providing a designated digging box filled with soft materials, such as rice, dried beans, or shredded paper, can be an excellent way to satisfy their natural digging instincts. This not only keeps them entertained but also prevents them from digging in inappropriate places.
For more information and facts on ferret husbandry, visit our website, novabright.io and check out our Small Animal Care Course.

It's fun fact friday! This week is all about dogs! 🐶

When checking a dog's airway, it's important to first check for any obstructions in the mouth and observe for abnormal movements or sounds in the chest.

To assess breathing, observe the rate and pattern of breaths and listen for any abnormal sounds.
A normal breathing rate for dogs is around 10-30 breaths per minute.
Checking circulation involves assessing the capillary refill time, which should be less than 2 seconds when pressure is applied to the gum line or inner thigh.

Remember that these steps are meant to help you assess your dog's condition in an emergency situation, but it's always important to seek professional veterinary care if you suspect your dog is experiencing respiratory distress or other health emergencies.

Its fun fact friday! This week is all about birds. 🦜

Providing enrichment is crucial for the physical and mental health of budgies and cockatiels.

These birds in captivity can become bored and stressed, leading to various health and behavioural issues such as feather plucking.

To provide enrichment, owners can offer a range of toys, perches, and food puzzles. Toys can include items like swings, ladders, and bells, perches of varying diameters and textures and pieces of natural wood or rope. Food puzzles can be created using specialised feeders or hiding treats and seeds around the cage. It's essential to rotate enrichment items regularly to keep the birds engaged and prevent habituation.

It's also vital to choose safe and appropriate enrichment items and supervise the birds with new items to avoid ingestion of unsafe items or any injuries.

It's fun fact friday! This week it's lizards. 🦎

Did you know that some species of lizards are able to detach their tails when they are under attack?

This is called "autotomy," and it allows the lizard to escape from predators while the tail continues to wriggle, distracting the predator and giving the lizard time to get away.

The lizard will eventually grow a new tail, although the replacement is not always as long or colourful as the original. This is a top consideration to make prior to attempting to handle certain species.

Fun fact friday! This week is chickens. 🐔

Did you know that chickens have a unique feeding behaviour, called "tidbitting"?

When a chicken finds something to eat, they make a series of high-pitched, repetitive clucks to let the other chickens know that it's found food.
This is called tidbitting, and it's a way for chickens to communicate with each other and share food.
So, if you hear chickens making this sound, you know they've found something delicious to eat!

It's important to teach children to pick up after their pets! With it being Pooper Scooper Awareness Week, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of picking up after your dogs! 🐶

1. It's a criminal offence in most areas of the UK to not pick up your dog p**p, you can be faced with a fixed penalty fine. 💸

2. It can spread disease. Diseases such as Parvo are easily spread by dog p**p. Parvo is a potentially fatal disease!😷

3. It can be harmful to the environment. If you do pick up your dog p**p but then decide to throw the bag into a bush or hang from a tree, it's not only unpleasant but can cause potential dangers to the environment and wildlife around them.😵

Pet First Aid Month!
In a pet emergency, first port of call would be to contact a vet.

Older children should always be told where to access the emergency vet number, especially if you own a pet with an ongoing illness or medical condition.
