As 2022 comes to an end, our team reflects on what a year we have had. It was our first year as a coordinating rescue and there were lots of challenges to overcome and ever changing logistics to support the northern communities and their dogs.

We are thrilled to be heading into the new year with 2 spay and neuter clinics set for January with the hopes of another 2-3 within the year. Along with the plans for smaller wellness clinics to provide vaccinating, check ups and deworming.

We are so grateful for the rescues that provided partnership with us this year and helped so many of our dogs start a new chapter in life and look forward to working with many in the new year.

This could you Timmins! We are on the hunt 👀 for more reliable, available fosters in Timmins, Ontario. It’s typically just a few days - between transport - but a huge need for us.

Our rescue network has many moving parts. Not everyone realized how many hands, homes and vehicles come together to support one dog. Sometimes you get to see one part of it but truly - there are many people, homes, hands and support given to help a single dog or pup come into our care. We can’t tag everyone!!

One crucial aspect is temporary foster homes in Timmins, Ontario. We have a few regular amazing homes but due to life and other events, many of our other fosters aren’t available anymore.

These wonderful dogs fly from the James Bay Coast to Timmins (where the airport is located). Sometimes it is one night - sometimes it is 7 days. But usually it’s just 2-3 days before they pack up and come south.

All the dogs you have seen on our channels first land in Timmins before we transport them via land - cars, vans etc to the south.

We are currently seeking short term, temporary fosters in Timmins. It isn’t a long term commitment but just short stays.

Not in Timmins? This is how you can help:
Tag a friend who lives in Timmins
Share to your stories and say “attention Timmins”

Send this post to a friend who lives in and around Timmins

The more people that share this, the higher likelihood we can find more amazing homes for our fosters to temporarily land in.

All of these photos are from one of our great fosters Erika! Thank you to Erika for opening her home and loving on the dogs while they crash at her home on their stop over.

If you are able to help, please email our founder Holly - [email protected]

Loves: kisses, playing, a good cuddle and other dogs 🐕

Rescue community, meet sweetie Daphne! This affectionate gal is available for adoption with Precious Paws.

We want to help as many of our alumni foster dogs find homes before the holidays as possible. Help us help Daphne find a wonderful family to start the next chapter of her life. Like, share, comment.

Daphne is a 10 month old Northern dog who was rescued from a northern Ontario community after she was hit by a car. Her family made the very difficult decision to send her south so she could get the veterinary care & intervention she required on her front left paw. She is fully healed and very ready to start the next chapter of her story.

Like many of our dogs, Daphne loves other dogs and is extremely friendly and playful with dogs. It sounds like she would make a great second dog in a home without cats. She is fostered with 3 other dogs and gets along with all - big & small.

More good news, Daphne has been exposed to dog savvy children in her foster home 💕 but she is excitable and is working on not jumping - so best if her family has older dog savvy kids.

This quick learner is working on her obedience and skills. She would thrive with more training.

If Daphne sounds and looks like a wonderful fit for your life and family, please apply for Daphne with Precious Paws.

SURPRISE - we have grown the Paws of the North family by 8!

Last Thursday night/Friday morning, one of our new fosters Angel went into labor. It was unexpected and required an emergency c-section. As you can likely guess, we had to move quickly to ensure the safety of all and we are so grateful for the Team at the Bracebridge Animal Hospital for helping deliver 8 healthy puppies safely.

Mama Angel and the babies rested all weekend and all are recovering from the eventful day we had on Friday.

With 8 puppies on our hands much earlier than we expected, we would love to have your support. Angel’s emergency life saving c-section was $3,000 and we are also in need of puppy supplies.

An end of an era ……

I started working with Finding Them Homes in the very first month that I created Paws of the North. The partnership was formed instantly when we realized our rescues shared the exact same values and passion when working with Northern communities and their dogs.

The past 3 years, I have been so grateful to work alongside Lisa & Julia and the team of FTH, as we work to support the communities of the James Bay coast.

Today, amongst some of our northern dogs, we raised our glasses in cheer to their 10 years of rescue service coming to an end.

From the support they have provided POTN the last few years to gaining lifelong friends, I will be forever grateful.

POTN will continue to support these communities and continue on the legacy FTH has created.

In closing, we are also very grateful that FTH provided POTN with their remaining charity funds to continue on the work we do.

Thank you Finding Them Homes; you’ll always be a part of our pack.

Sometimes it’s hard to share the not good news stories. Dog rescue has highs and lows. The roller coaster of surprises takes it’s toll. We have some difficult news.

We appreciate everyone’s patience in regards to an update on 40. We welcomed this handsome and famous senior into our care recently.

We didn’t share this news as we wanted his caring family to have time to receive updates and veterinary news. You see, 40 was very loved by family and the community. Everyone knew him. He showed up at the nurses building. He appeared on news recordings about Attawapiskat.

Now that family has been informed properly, we are writing to give you all an update on his health.

We wish we had better news but unfortunately the lump cytology came back cancerous.

The size and speed of replication of cells makes it too difficult to go under surgery and remove, especially with his age.

This type of cancer has likely spread to other areas at this point too, and even if it were to be removed it replicate and grow again fast.

Our doctor and surgical team feel it’s best for 40 to just enjoy retirement and the quality of life he has now (as he’s doing pretty well) and we will treat with pain if necessary until it’s his time ❤️

With that being said, he has settled into his southern life with ease.

40 enjoys his morning walk, followed by his Christmas advent calendar. He loves to snuggle in a cozy blanket and chew on his bone or favorite toy - Mr Reindeer.

Right now, 40 is still enjoying life and we will monitor and maintain the quality for a long as humanely possible.

Again, we are grateful for his family for entrusting us with 40’s care and will continue to be in communication with them on his health. We are making sure he is happy and comfortable.

Please comment below and send your well wishes to this famous Atta boy

Another day, another happy ending story for Skya! We are so excited to see this dog find her people. We have seen the updates and thus far, lots of kisses and love! Congrats to all! Much thanks to Mattie's Place for being a part of her story

[ SUCH A MAGICAL DOG ]

Skya is the sweetest dog one could ever hope to meet. Absolute perfection in each and every way imaginable.

She joined us from a very remote, Northern Ontario, fly-in only community, through Paws of the North Rescue

We welcomed her a couple months ago, after she had given birth to a litter but wasn't the mothering type, so her babies were raised by another nursing Mom and Skya joined us here at Mattie's Place.

Her pups later joined our rescue and are now available for adoption as well; Anna and Elsa.

This morning Skya and I hit the road bright and early for her official adoption day!

This family fell in love with Skya before they even met her. They loved her no matter what difficulties she may have (she does have some separation anxiety) and were ready to support her through anything she needs.

I'm so happy for this truly magical dog, that she has found an amazing family in time for the holidays!

Thank you so much Suzanne and family for your continued dedication to our dogs needing foster care. Time and time again you step up and deliver without hesitation.

Happy life Skya!

🚙PRECIOUS PUPS🚙 y’all know we have been BUSY when we haven’t had time to share the beautiful pups that have travelled south.

Recently, a few new followers have asked how dogs come into our care. We work with community members when they would like to rehome their dog or if the band council deems a dog a stray/not owned. A release form is always signed. We never want to remove a family’s dog without their permission. This is important for all the know - that we work with dog owners when they ask for help. Many of them follow us and continue to watch their dogs start another chapter in their life but it can also be hard for them. We believe strongly in supporting them with dignity & respect.

This week, we had two separate ground transport take place - supported by our amazing Northern drivers 🚙

First up, blue eyed beauties are travelling today & are headed to Halfway Home K9 Rescue

Next up, Gooper and 2 pup of the 4 light coloured pups have also gone to Halfway Home K9 Rescue

The other 2 sweet pups are off to Project Paws Dog Rescue

Huge thanks yo our Northern driver volunteers!

If you are interested in any of these puppies, please follow our tagged rescue partners & wait for them to be shared. They need to settle in & get checked out by a vet before they will be available.

THOSE EARS! Rescue community, meet Johnny. This smart boy is available for adoption with Save Me Rescue

We want to help as many of our alumni foster dogs find homes before the holidays as possible. Help us help Johnny find a wonderful family to start the next chapter of his life. Like, share, comment.

Wee Johnny here is 11lbs at 11 weeks old and we have it on good authority that although he was one of the smallest boys in his litter - he felt he was the mightiest! Strong, silent type they say. You may remember Mama G - well sweet Johnny here is from her litter.

If you are looking for a highly intelligent dog who is coming with his basic trainings, well you better apply for Johnny before someone else does! This lucky boy is being fostered by dog trainers. Before you start that online app, do know that Johnny is super smart and so he would thrive with owners who are experienced and want to continue his training.

So what else do you need to know? Crate trained. Working on his housetraining. They are being exposed to life - grooming, other dogs but not cats yet.

If Johnny sounds and looks like a wonderful fit for your life and family, please apply for Johnny: http://savemedogrescue.ca/dog/johnny-2/

We can’t wait to see Johnny become a wonderful adult dog.

Nothing makes us happier than to share the good stories - our wonderful dogs finding wonderful home! Thanks to Mattie's Place for helping Rocket start his next chapter in life

[ A HUSKY FAMILY FOR A HUSKY PUPPY ]

In October, Rocket joined Mattie's Place from a very remote, fly-in only Northern Ontario community.

He joined his foster family and blossomed with kids and a dog and loads of love.

I set out to find him an incredible home and knew this was a great match when I ready country property and huskies. This wonderful couple own a beautiful country property. They have 2 senior dogs and 1 wonderful young husky, Maple, that is so thankful to have a playmate in puppy Rocket. They've had years of huskies and understand the breed deeply.

Rocket has settled in wonderfully since officially joining his new family yesterday and I'm so thankful he has a home to call his own for the holidays. He'll continue to thrive in this environment with 3 older dogs there to guide him.

Thank you Amy Polson & Family for your dedication to Rocket and helping him learn about life around him under your foster care.

When we work together, very special things happen. The Northern Holiday Box Project was just an idea in the late fall - a way to send a gift of love and appreciation to families in James Bay.

Inspired by the idea of kin, dogs play an important part in First Nations communities & families. We wanted to not only support the dogs but their loving families as well.

Last night, the final step was executed - the holiday boxes that you donated and sponsored were dropped off at the Timmins Airport by our Northern Team and wonderful driver Yannick (he did the DRIVE SOLO!!!!).

We also were able to move a large amount of donated crates, dog food and canine supplies to our Northern storage unit for future shipments.

Thank you to every person who contributed and donated their time to this project. It is our first year doing this and weren't sure how it would turn out.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude.

We have almost met our goal to cover transportation costs as the final receipts for moving everything come into our hands. Uhaul rental, gas and of course - the most expensive cost - cargo shipping from Timmins to the Communities.

If you would like to help cover these expenses, we would be so grateful - donate here: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/76999?v1=true

It’s been a whirlwind few days for us & our new friend Coco.

We know so many of you were extremely worried about Coco - as were we. Things were dire. Between our partners being closed for intake - the holidays - the urgent nature of his fracture from being hit by a car, things were not easy to coordinate.

There was tears, pleas and a lot of messages sent back and forth about how we could get Coco to help ASAP.

Enter the main players in this chapter of Coco’s story.

Our Northern team in Timmins for coordinating with Hard Rock Animal Hospital and getting him seen right away by a vet

Pilots4Paws for volunteering on short notice to fly from London, Ontario to Timmins to personally es**rt Coco to Toronto so he could be seen by a surgeon. Jeremy + Randy were able to quickly and safely transport Coco to Toronto where he was met by our next player…

Cate - an alumni and regular driver. Cate didn’t bat an eyelid when she heard about Coco’s urgent and time sensitive situation: “I will foster him”. Although this time of year is hectic for most, Cate welcomed Coco into her safe home with a moments notice.

And finally, Denise of Mattie's Place. On short order, Denise worked her magic and came up with the real Christmas miracle. She got Coco an appointment to receive the surgical intervention he required ASAP. As Mattie’s Place just shared, Coco is still in surgery with the team at Caledon Mountain Veterinary Hospital under the care of Dr. John. Caledon Mountain Veterinary Hospital

We are so thankful to everyone who worked together to help this sweet boy.

We are stronger together. If you would like to continue to support Coco and his expensive journey to recovery, please head to Mattie’s Place page where Denise has shared the full story: https://www.facebook.com/MattiesPlaceToronto/posts/pfbid02v3x8E9XRkifZvtPY5hkJqnz9ZQq22XeotiYm81SQiaDmUEnANv82DZLwexQAHwTbl

SANTA 🎅 IS ON HIS WAY 🛷

Early this morning while you all slept, our very own northern driver legend set out for Timmins.

With a packed Uhaul truck, filled with gifts of appreciation and love for families in James Bay along with kibble, crates and supplies like leashes, collars and treats - our special holiday mission moved forward.

That’s the good news. The bad news is, we are short on covering transportation (ground and air) to cover the expense of moving supplies north.

If you thought filling your tank was expensive wait until you see our receipts 😱

For todays transport north alone, our bill will be over $1,000. We are so grateful for those who have already donated - we have $350/1,000 donated.

Do you think you can help us cover the remainder today?

We need just $600 donated today to cover the truck rental and mileage. $500 for gas. So $1100 total.

We know we can do it! Donate using this link to help cover todays trip - https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/76999?v1=true

We can’t wait to fill hearts & bellies this holiday season.

THE NORTHERN BOXES & SUPPLIES ARE READY TO HEAD NORTH FOR THE HOLIDAYS

It really does take a ”village” - from donors to packers, to drivers, to sorters to those who shared - so many of you were involved in this initiative.

Tomorrow very early, an Uhaul truck we have rented driven by Yannick will be departing for Timmins. In that truck are the Northern dog holidays boxes (and bags!), crates, leashes, collars, kibble and other canine supplies,

We had so many people sponsor boxes, donate supplies and give their time to help make this happen - thank you to everyone!!! We are so appreciative of you

Gather round friends, today we are sharing a very special dog with you.

Meet Ashay. This gentle distinguished gentleman is available for adoption with Mattie's Place.

If we were writing his Bumble bio, this is what it would say.

Love Netflix? Me too, if you are looking for someone to snuggle up with and be a couch potato with, you have stumbled upon the right good boy. Looking for my special someone to have a low key life together - hang out in the backyard, watch the world pass and take short walks to sniff and see the neighbours.

Although we don’t know, it’s suspected that this long haired beauty is around 10 years old. Ashay is looking to enjoy his retirement with someone who doesn’t mind that he is taking life slowly these days. Love him for his strong senior vibes - he loves his toys, affection and meeting people.

If you have pets and cuddles to give - Ashay could become your very own gentle giant. We know that Mattie’s Place is looking for the right home for our boy here - one that will as low key as he is. If you are happy to have a gentleman in his senior golden years join your quiet home, we would love to see Ashay find his forever home.

Are you his person? Learn more about Ashay & apply for him with Mattie’s Place

Urgent care update for Coco.

We are so thankful that Coco has landed safely in Timmins. Late last night he arrived safely into our care with trusted fosters and was taken early this morning to Hard Rock Animal Hospital to better understand his injuries.

We are so happy to know there are no extensive internal injuries to Coco. He does however have a clean fracture of his left front leg (you can see his fractured leg in the video we shared yesterday) and will require surgical intervention.

At this time we are in the works of securing potential placement with a partner rescue and finding a surgical team to take care of this in the next few days.

Emergencies like this do not happen all the time, but when they do, they are costly and a huge drain of our rescue finances. We want Coco to get the care he needs and make a full recovery but we can’t do that without your help. Having him flown out and seen today by the staff at Hard Rock was a hefty bill alone.

If you could consider making even a small donation towards Coco’s vet bills, we would be very grateful. This boy deserves the best and we are so glad his owners reach out to ask us for help.

Donate to Coco’s vet bills here - https://pawsofthenorthrescue.com/help/donate/

Donations over $25 are eligible for a Canadian Tax Receipt! Your accountant will thank us later!!!

Rescue community, meet Juniper - or Juni for short! This beautiful smaller gal is available with New Collar Collective

We want to help as many of our alumni foster dogs find homes before the holidays as possible. We could not think of a more deserving dog - Juni has been in care for awhile now and has been patiently waiting for her forever home. Help us help Juni find a wonderful family to call her own. Like, share, comment.

This super friendly gal is around 3 years old. Juniper came down from the James Bay Coast to safely have her last litter in care. She LOVES to be outdoors and makes a great running buddy (just ask her foster). She loves walking, watching squirrels, just smelling that delicious fresh air.

Love adventures? Juni does too! What a coincidence! She is medium energy and enjoys being with her people.

She loves playing and romping with dog pals but isn’t suited for a home with small animals like cats! Juni seems to have high prey drive. She is fully house trained and being an adult, is not destructive in her foster home.

She doesn’t live with children but appears to be happy with them like most northern dogs.

Are you her person? Learn more about Juniper & apply for her with New Collar Collective

WE COULDN’T SAY NO.

Should we have said “no”? Yes. Could we? No. We cannot ignore the families who rely on us.

On the weekend, we got an urgent call for help - Sweet Coco had been hit by a car.

As the world turns to close down for the holidays, take time to rest and celebrate - rescues close intake for the holidays. We understand.. But we aren’t.

Because Coco and his loving family members need us.

The world keeps moving - accidents happen and we can’t always plan for when the communities that need us call us with an emergency.

We need a Christmas miracle for Coco.

Based on presentation in videos we were sent, we believe its a fracture. We are waiting for a call back from Animal Health Partners today - the emergency veterinary hospital in Toronto.

We are estimating that Coco’s fracture repair surgery can cost upward of $7,000-$8,000.

We have put the wheels in motion to get Coco the care he needs. immediately responded and is going to fly him on Wednesday from Timmins to Toronto.

Now we just need a miracle to help cover his emergency veterinary care bills.

If you can help Coco, please donate - https://pawsofthenorthrescue.com/help/donate/

All donations over $25 get a tax receipt for 2022! We need the power of our community to come together. Get this guy safely into the hands of some of the top vets in our province to help him live his best life.

THIS WEEKS TRANSPORT 🚐 OUR PRECIOUS CARGO HAS ARRIVED SAFELY🚐

If you were following along with our stories this week, you may have seen some new dogs travelling over the last few days. We had both ground and air travel happening for our pups.

On Thursday, we had two cuties arrive down south. Wee Tuco and Angel arrived with love thanks to the wonderful volunteers of the Northern Rescue Drivers Group!

Tuco was eager to join Matties Place and booked in at the spa right away for a fresh new Christmas look! Tuco’s family decided to surrender him so he could get the grooming and vet care he needed to have a long healthy life.

Angel is joining our Paws of the North pack for the holiday season as she will be expecting some babies to arrive any day now! Angel will be joining Project Paws Dog Rescue once she has weaned her pups. She will be spayed and vetted and ready for her own home eventually. Her puppies (we think this one is going to be a big one!) will join our other partnering rescues once they are ready as well.

Flying with style yesterday, Sally joined pilots Jeremy and Angelo for a short trip south to Brampton. Sally has joined me Save Me Dog Rescue to start her next chapter. A tiny 10 week old shepherd mix won the hearts of the pilots and got extra cuddles. She is headed to Precious Paws Dog Rescue along with a litter of 7 puppies. We are so grateful for this new partnership program with Pilots for Paws - it makes the trip south much shorter and therefore, less stressful for the puppies.

We love sharing the happy tails of dogs who are starting their new journey.

If you are interested in any of these pups, please follow our partners rescues for their next chapter in life.

As always, a huge thanks to the Northern rescue drivers + the Pilots for Paws team for dedicating their time to help these beautiful dogs.

If you would like to help donate towards assisting us transporting dogs that have been surrendered by their owners to our rescue, please donate using this link:

Rescue community, meet The Rock. You might remember this handsome guy as he was an urgent medical case we had to flew out for care. He is available with our partner Project Paws.

We want to help as many of our alumni foster dogs find homes before the holidays as possible. Help us get these amazing dogs into wonderful loving homes. Like, share, comment. Can you help us find his forever home?

One word for The Rock: CHILL

His rescue is just GUSHING about him. “The Rock is a fabulous dog. Honestly this guy, I can’t say one bad thing.”

Here’s what you need to know about this handsome adoptable dog. He’s calm, easy going, great with new people, exposed to children and housetrained. He walks well on his leash - LOVES his daily walks and if he could, sits outside watching nature. Oh and he’s crate trained!

We helped The Rock receive medical that is not available in his community. He had infected puncture wounds that required surgery and to be drained. This hasn’t stopped The Rock from being good with other dogs (although he is not currently living with any other dogs). The Rock is vaccinated and neutered - all ready for his forever home.

Are you his person? Learn more about The Rock & apply for him with Project Paws Dog Rescue (based in Barrie)
