These are Coturnix quail, more commonly known as Japanese quail. The eggs weigh on average 8 grams... so you'd need a damn good amount for breakfast!

Did you know that they are named after John Saunders Sebright who created them, and lay tiny white eggs. 🐣

Made the baby chicken mansion smaller so these guys could have a bigger space, as there were just too many for the usual brooder 😅 As they get older this will be opened up to its full size giving them plenty of space. So many babies! 🐤🐥🐣

Out of this lot, I am unquestionably most excited about the Cream Legbars (blue-green in the middle rack) from Rebel Chickens 🥰

Doing the nightly checks and collecting eggs, and thought we’d double check none of Mrs Heft’s eggs had been stolen by rats. Don’t think we need to worry about anybody thieving off that moody broody! Can’t wait to see how many more we have tomorrow 🥰

... and have finished building this baby mansion for our future hatches! Definitely never want to look at another cable tie ever again 🤣

Definitely a much easier concept compared to the smaller and many pens we has set up. Those pens will now be cleaned, modified, and attached to use as mini coops for our breeding pens.. which we are also in the process of putting our first 4 up. One Chook Farm needs a holiday! 😲🐣

Setting up hatch cam was the best thing I ever did!

This little one has made its way in to the world a little bit early (pipped early yesterday morning - day 19), but it seems it’s friends are following suit. Another couple have pipped in there!

Fingers crossed this corner of the incubator are all pullets - they are a handful of carefully selected crosses so I can build myself a small flock of rainbow layers 🥰

James is seeking a new 🏡 with some ladies to call his very own. He is a big, beautiful purebred Australorp boy, who will be 12 months old as of New Years. He is genuinely one of the best natured roosters I’ve ever had, he will hop up in your lap for a treat but is generally found milling around your feet checking out what you’re up to.

He is unsuitable for our breeding program (he has one golden coloured eye, best seen in the last photo) so we are looking to place him with someone who will love him as much as we do. This boy is far too nice to end up in the pot, he is one of the nicest roos I’ve ever met!

A box of babies hanging out yesterday while the brooder got cleaned and food and water changed. In this little flock there are Australorps, Silver Laced Wyandotte’s, Pekin Bantams, Vorwerks, a Double Laced Barnevelder, and some of our crossbreds. Aren’t they just the cutest!? 🥰

The grown up birds had a nice dust bath in the sun, while I accidentally made half a bale of straw explode in the coop. The photo doesn’t do the depth justice, it’s half way up my shin, whoops!

Lil Red doesn’t seem to mind that it’s everywhere though, and they’ll have it scratched all through the pen by tomorrow anyway 🤷‍♀️😂
Just gotta fill up the feeder and then it’s on to the babies. Happy chooks!

Hello everyone, we are back!

We had some misfortune with our Japanese Bantams so we have decided we are no longer breeding them. We have moved into mainly Australorps and mixed breed layers (and possibly a few others down the track).

It's been a busy last few weeks with all these incubators running full time, getting brooders built and set up, and there's still a bit of work to go. 🔨

Site (and chick) supervisor Pippa and foreman Parker have been helping to keep an eye on things and assist with the set up.

Currently all incubators are in lockdown and we are waiting not so patiently to hear lots of chirping and say hello to all the new hatches for this round! 🐣,

Because 1 breed of chicken is never enough 🤫

These are our newest additions to the showing and breeding program- Australorps!

These funny little birds are so curious, first to meet you at the gate, will follow you around like a personal army, love a good cuddle, and will even have a nap on your lap!

Enjoying watching them grow up, we've have them from a week old and boy oh boy are they growing fast!! 🤣

In an unexpected turn of events, our first Black Copper Maran chick has hatched! After being in the incubator for only 9 days, we are pretty sure the eggs had been sat on prior to purchase. We had to put him/her out in the brooder pen a little earlier than we would normally like, but with no room in the incubator (still full of eggs with the turners in!) we made the choice to pop it under the heat lamp with the 2 other mixed breed chicks. Happy and healthy, chirping away and making friends. What a wonderful surprise! 🥰

16/01/2021

Our ladies have settled in to their new home nicely and have been laying like mad! Just in time for our River Eggtech incubator to come back from being calibrated, so hopefully in 3 long weeks we will have lots of little babies running around 😁

My favourite feature on this incubator (other than the brilliant viewing windows that stay clear even when the humidity is raised during lockdown) is the multi-sized egg turner. Although the small sections are designed for quail eggs, the Japanese Bantam eggs fit comfortably with 2 to a section, and can fit 3 if needed. This is great for us as it means we can fit up to 72 eggs in a 24 egg incubator!

It will be even busier than this in 3 weeks time if all goes to plan though - we are also testing out our new incubator with 2 mixed dozens. In there we have 6 each of Gold Laced Wyandottes, Pekin Bantams, Araucanas, and Black Copper Marans, so with any luck everything will make it through to hatch and we will have loads of cute babies to spam you all with! 🥰

Repurposing part of our old dog yard fence, a few pickets, chicken wire, and the aviary we got not too long ago. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but this yard was built in 2!

Still a bit of work to go yet making full length doors for the avairy bays, putting the roof on the outside part, but it’s a start for some happy chooks who were keen to get out and explore their new house 🥰
