Rat Care Basics - Socialising and Playtime
Rats are incredibly social and enjoy cuddling and playing with their humans. They form very close bonds with their humans.
Rats should have at least 1-2 hours out of the cage everyday. You should spend some time cuddling and playing with them during their free roam time.
They benefit from different enrichment activities like dig boxes and pea fishing.
Rats can be litter trained, which can make free roam time easier for rat owners.

✨ Cage Inspiration ✨
Dinosaur Jungle Cage
Rat cages should have lots of space for climbing, sleeping and playing. I like to add houses, baskets, plant pots and hammocks for lots of sleeping options.
I like to include wooden chews for the rats to chomp.
Rats can be litter trained, so feel free to include litter boxes and p*e rocks to reduce the spread of poops.
A humidifier near the cage can be a great addition due to rats being prone to respiratory issues.
My bars are a little far apart, so I have covered the cage in chicken wire.

Rat Care Basics - Diet
Rats benefit from a varied and nutritious diet. They need a combination of rodent block and fresh food to promote a healthy and happy long life.
Rats are easy to feed because they eat a lot of what you already have in your fridge! Feed everything in moderation, you can have too much of a good thing. They should have access to hard food throughout the day to promote dental health.
Unlike dogs, rats CAN eat chocolate, so they can have a little nibble every now and then. Like us, the sugar isn't great for them, so sugary treats like biscuits, chocolate and carrots shouldn't be part of their regular diet, just sneaky treats every now and then.
