With temperatures already so high this season, Louie Roo would like to give you some ideas for keeping your birds cool!

- Ventilation. A coop without enough ventilation is like a car with the windows up. You want your coops/runs as open as possible during the hot months.

- Water. Ice or frozen water bottles in their water is a great way to keep them cooled off.

- Shade. Get your birds out of the sun. If you can't move your coop and it gets a lot of sun, adding shade may be needed. Shade cloths, plywood, or planting trees around your coop are just a few ways to add shade.

- Misters. Although most birds don't love to be sprayed down, a good misting is a good way to cool them off, especially if the wind is blowing. Even if you don't have a mister, a quick spray down of your birds a couple times a day can help a lot.

- Fans. If you have no wind or not enough ventilation, adding a fan for your chickens can make all the difference.

- Poultry popsicles. Cold and/or frozen fruits and veggies are a great way to help your birds forget about the heat... But be sure to stay away from corn. Corn has a heating effect on chickens as they digest it (keep that in mind for winter though!)

- Kiddie pools. Some birds LOVE to stand in water when they're hot. Just be sure your birds can get out if they want, and keep in mind you don't need to put a lot of water in the pool... just a few inches is plenty!

Louie Roo says it's ok if you do ALL of these things too 😄 Stay cool and enjoy your Summer!❤

The Tipple (Crane Fly) or "Skeeter Eater" as they're known here in the South, is completely harmless, and may help pollinate certain flowers. Unfortunately they are also harmless to mosquitoes.
