Folks, please don’t take this post offensively, but stop watching YouTube videos on how to breed fish for profit. The best way to consider this type of business venture is by finding a mentor who is willing to take the time to educate you and be honest.

Breeding fish on any type of large scale is HARD work! MANY of us who have successful businesses still work a 9 to 5 job to make ends meet. I will use myself as an example.

During the first two years of building my fish rooms , I invested approximately $25,000 for equipment necessary to breed quality fish. My electric bill ALONE to operate my fish rooms for ONE month averages $300. My total expenses for ONE month averages $800 - $1,000. That requires the sale of a lot of fish just to break even. My fishrooms consist of 110 aquariums. I Do some sort of maintenance DAILY. I’ve sacrificed a lot to do this. Why? Because I enjoy providing aquatic life to all of you. But , I also feel a purpose for breeding and maintaining bloodlines of endangered fish.

I will use a statement made by my friend , Greg Sage; who has operated Select Aquatics for fourteen years. “ If you operate an aquatic business that lasts three years , you are considered an old-timer.”
I have my own theory on why he feels this way. Many people do not realize the hard work and commitment needed to operate this type of business. Trust me, it’s not a quick and easy money maker.

I guess the reason I am posting this lengthy message is I feel that many people are being spoon-fed a false sense of security. They feel that they can just quit their jobs and go into the aquatic business. Friends , do not make this mistake. If you choose to breed fish , go into the venture with an open mind and a source as a compass to guide you for success.

Hello everyone! I thought I would take a minute to discuss Ilyodon furcidens, (The Trout Goodeid.)

Recently, this species has become popular with hobbyists that are interested in working with Goodeids. With all the hooplah, there is a little bit of misinformation being circulated. Ilydon furcidens is not a critically endangered fish. Currently, they are not listed on the CARES Priority List for Conservation. However, that is not to say that this species' status would not change in the future since many freshwater fish are on the verge of being threatened due to pollution and invasive species impacting their native waters.

Regardless of their current status with the CARES Program, Ilydon furcidens is one of my favorite Goodeids in the fish room! I am currently working with three separate breeding colonies in order to provide these popular fish to hobbyists.

Currently, I do not have any offspring available. However, I am hoping that will change this season.
