Saturday’s Pop Up Class! These dedicated ladies came out and trained for an hour in the cold weather!

When it comes to choosing treats for our furry friends, it's important to prioritize their safety and well-being. One popular choice that pet owners should reconsider is rawhide chews. Although they might seem like a fun and enjoyable treat for dogs, rawhide chews can actually pose significant risks to their health.

Chemical Concerns
Rawhide chews are often made from cattle or horse hides, which undergo a manufacturing process involving harmful chemicals. Initially, the hides are soaked in sodium sulfide to remove hair and fat. They are then treated with additional chemicals to split them into layers, followed by hydrogen peroxide to make them appear white and fresh. This process also helps mask any rancid odors. Moreover, some rawhide chews are colored and shaped with festive dyes and glue, further increasing the chemical load.

Choking Hazards and Intestinal Blockages
Beyond the chemical dangers, rawhide chews are notorious for being choking hazards. When dogs chew on rawhide, it becomes slippery when wet, which makes it difficult to remove if they start choking. Additionally, these chews can cause severe intestinal blockages that could require emergency veterinary attention. Unfortunately, these risks are more common than many dog owners realize, particularly around the holidays when these treats are often gifted.

Safer Alternatives
For the sake of your dog's safety, it's advisable to avoid rawhide chews entirely. Fortunately, there are plenty of healthier and more natural alternatives available:

Fish Skin Rolls: these treats are a little smelly, but are rich in Omega 3’s for a healthy coat. These crunchy treats are also great for Dental Health as they help remove plaque and tartar.

Yak Chews: Crafted from yak and cow milk, these durable chews are 3 ingredients and low in fat.

Sweet potato Chews: all natural, single ingredient treats will always be considered the healthiest treats for our dogs.

For dogs that love to chew, consider deer antlers.

Supervision is Key
While these alternatives are generally safer, no chew is completely without risk. It's important to always supervise your dog while they enjoy any treat or toy to ensure their safety.

Our pets' happiness and safety should always come first. By taking a little extra care in selecting their treats, we can significantly reduce the risk of health issues and keep our beloved dogs safe and healthy. Remember, a little vigilance goes a long way in protecting your furry friend's well-being.
