Playtime is a great time to help your dog work on important skills like impulse control and thinking when excited! We love teaching dogs the rules of tug to help them practice these skills.

The rules of tug:
1. Sit to ask the play the game.
2. Don't take the toy until you're told "take."
3. Release the toy when you are told "out."
4. Never put your teeth on human skin.

Our current Discovery Kits are all about dogs' emotional experiences. The Dog at Heart kits explore what emotions dogs do and don't experience, what emotions feel like for dogs, and how to use all that info to help your dog thrive. Learn more and subscribe at www.dogbybox.com!

We put a lot of energy into the skills we want our dogs to have to make our walks, hikes, and outings easier. What about the skills we can hone to make those situations go more smoothly?

1. Proactive planning - Think about what challenges you and your dog might face and how to best prepare for them. Choose locations and times to set you up for success. You might want to pack more treats or better treats.

2. Situational awareness - Knowing what will get your dog worked up (in a good way or a bad way) and doing your best to spot it before they do can help you prevent emotions from getting too high.

3. Reading your dog's body language - If you can learn the signs that your dog is starting to get fixated, excited, scared, etc. before their feelings get the best of them, you can redirect them and set them up for success.

Now that Memorial Day has passed, we're officially in frozen Kong season!

This was probably already obvious, but a 2021 study found that edible chew toys and food puzzles kept dogs busier for longer than non-edible chew toys. So when you need to keep your dog calm and out of trouble, what's better than Kong that you freeze to make it last even longer?!

Our Dumpster Thrivers Discovery Kits launched this month! In Dumpster Thrivers, we dig into what it's like to be a scavenger, why our dogs still love to scavenge even though they don’t need to do it to survive, and how to let your dog indulge in their desire to scavenge in ways that are safe and fun.

Globally, 70% of dogs still get most of their calories from scavenging, which means they spend large chunks of their day searching for food. All that time spent scavenging is quite satisfying for dogs. Their brains are designed to crave it. So while it's wonderful that our dogs have reliable access to high-quality food, the loss of scavenging is a bummer for them and can leave them feeling bored, with mental energy to burn. This excess mental energy can show up in our dogs in a variety of ways from inappropriate chewing and digging to pestering to barking.

So, we recommend letting your dog scavenge a few times a day. They can scavenge for meals and snacks using store-bought and homemade food puzzles.

If you don't have a bunch of food puzzles, or even if you do and you just want some variety, here are some of our favorite recycling materials to turn into food puzzles:

Packing Paper - Spread packing paper out and then sprinkle treats on it. You can crumple it into balls or roll it and then knot it into a pretzel!

Yogurt Containers and Peanut Butter Jars - Serve as is, frozen, or with treats sprinkled in!

Boxes - Sprinkle treats inside and add toys, packing paper, or other objects for your dog to search for. If your dog is a newbie, cut the flaps off. For advanced dogs and super chewers, tuck the flaps into themselves.

Never give homemade food puzzles to dogs with a history of ingesting non-food objects.

Fun Fact: Touch is an oxytocin booster for dogs and people!

Give both of you a mood boost by giving your dog a massage. Follow this sequence of simple, gentle techniques for a relaxing at-home massage:

1. Gentle Compression - Start by slowly moving down your dog’s body, pressing gently with one or both hands for a few seconds. When doing their limbs, use one hand on each side of the limb. Watch out for spots of tension or areas that cause your dog to stiffen or become more alert.

2. Effleurage - Then use long, gentle, hand over hand strokes, slowly moving from your dog’s head all the way down their back and legs.

3. Petrissage - Finish by gently kneading in a circular motion, spending a little bit of extra time in tense areas. Work from the neck, up the back of the head and then down through the body.
