Top Raw Feeding Mistakes❌
My DMs are flooded with raw feeding questions. I applaud you all for wanting to feed raw, but I’m not gonna lie... you guys need to start reading first. Raw feeding can be very beneficial to your dog if it’s done right, but I’m sad to say I’m seeing lots of mistakes.
Here are the top mistakes that I’m seeing when it comes to raw feeding:
1) The bowls are incomplete. A Prey Model Raw Diet consists of 80% Meat, 10% Bone, 5% Liver, 5% Other Organ. You CANNOT feed your dog a bowl of liver and call it a well-balanced meal.
2) Owners are feeding cooked bones. It’s called a raw diet for a reason. Yes... dogs can digest raw bones. They however CANNOT digest cooked bones. Cooked bones will splinter, cause bleeding and/or blockages, and send your dog to the emergency room later on.
3) There’s no time for transition. Most of the time I see owners switching their dogs to raw food right away... and then can’t understand why their dog has diarrhea. Their stomach needs time to adjust. If you feed kibble, I’d suggest fasting your dog (do not fast puppies!) for a day and then slowly introduce meats such as chicken, turkey, or beef. IMPORTANT: do NOT give your dog different meats each day especially in the beginning. Stick to the same meal for the first week and then slowly transition to other proteins.
4) Zero reading & Zero research. Don’t get me wrong, I love helping you guys... but many of you are asking the same questions over and over. PLEAAAAASE take advantage of the free resources on our blog. Search “raw diet” for these posts on our page.
