Black Rock Mountain Staffordshire Bull Terriers Specializing in Uniquely American, AKC, Don Matthews pioneered “Old-Fashioned” English Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

The Ultimate K9 champion and foremost all-purpose family companion. The best emotional support and service animal in the WORLD Laura and Jesse are from Treasure Coast, Florida and consciously produce Champion Staffordshire Bull Terriers. All puppies are hand raised in the home, crate trained and Pre-socialized with the "Puppy Culture" method pioneered by Jane Killion. Their foundation is from Sout

h African show champions and working Quinlent bloodlines from the Netherlands. Though they call the beach home, their heart and dog’s ancestral bloodline can be traced to the Appalachian mountains of Alpine Georgia. This is the home of Don Matthews, Alan Scott and John D Johnson, the three men responsible for the creation of the American Bulldog and the Classic Southern spirit of Black Rock Mountain "Old-fashioned" Staffords. Laura and Jesse's mission is to continue Building Better (small) Bulldogs with each new generation. Showcasing the Staffordshire Bull Terrier as the BEST all-purpose companion and service dog in the WORLD! Jesse and Laura’s fondness for English Staffies comes from their shared Celtic-American ancestries and both of their families being caretakers of heritage breed bulldogs. They have great pride in preserving the breed’s traditional British heritage and pioneering American legacy. Many believe, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has retained the strongest health genetics and the classic bulldog trustworthy temperament. The English Stafford is one of only two breeds nick named “the Nanny Dog” and mentioned specifically by the AKC as being extremely friendly with people, especially children. In a Post-Pandemic world, Staffies excel as emotional support and service animals. Black Rock Mountain dogs perform any task with unmatched diligence, endless stamina and unstoppable heart. With great power, intelligence and trainability the Staffordshire Bull Terrier must be matched with expert level responsibility in its ambassadors. Laura and Jesse like to keep in touch with photos and share in their pups adventures for years to come.

Anyone that has a Staffy knows, not just any toy will survive those teeth and jaw pressure. As a matter a fact few will. Even our Jolly Ball (made for horses) has a half chewed off handle. Excited to try this brand with our guy's.

Know your roots, and place your swords on the mantle of respect retired warrior. Rest at ease but stay sharp for any and all tasks. For your human, you bulldog king of heart, go in full steam ahead. With unmatched gameness you show no fear as you face the reaper time and time again for simple praise. You ask for so little. A scratch behind the ear, a feed and a well deserved 'good dog' is all it takes to get any job done. We honor you by building better bulldogs with each new generation. - Laura and Jesse with Black Rock Mountain Staffordshire Bull Terriers

The History of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The various bully breeds, as they’re nicknamed, have been around for centuries. They date at least as far back as the 15th century, when bullbaiting — the harassment of a bull by a bulldog — was not only the preferred way to tenderize meat on the hoof, it was also a popular form of public entertainment. Pit bull-type dogs came into existence in the 18th century, the result of crosses between large and ferocious bulldogs and smaller, faster but just as tenacious terriers.

The Staffords evolved from those early bull and terrier crosses. They were popular with working men, in particular coal miners in Staffordshire, England, who enjoyed pitting them against each other. That association with fighting meant that breed recognition did not come quickly for them, even though dog fighting had been outlawed in 1835. It wasn’t until a century later that England’s Kennel Club recognized the breed. The American Kennel Club recognized the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in 1975
