The Bucket List Adventures of Rusty & Yoda

16 months ago we got a text about an emergency- a baby frenchie who needed to be surrendered- not even three months old, with the same condition as Rusty. After a specialist visit we were told we'd be lucky if he lived for more than a few weeks with his condition- that it'd be nothing short of a miracle if he made it to 8 months.

I remember being told we needed to think carefully if we could handle the heartache - that he'd be there one minute and gone the next. And this morning, that's exactly what happened- except we were lucky enough to get an extra year of time with him. And for that we are so grateful.

It didn't matter if we had days, weeks or months- he had our hearts from the moment we met him. Yoda was loved by so many and I hope he knew that. People squealed when they saw him and he made everyone laugh. He loved to run laps around the house with his toys, go on adventures, say hi to everyone he walked by- he didn't know how unfair it was he got handed this card and taught us to live each day like it's your last. Even though it would never have been enough time, the heartache is worth it- we are so thankful he came into our lives and that Bullies 2 The Rescue allowed us to be his family.

Let us tell you about Utley-
Utley came to B2TR May last year. He was a pretty sick kiddo. He was dropped at the shelter at 10 years young. 10 years old and discarded at the shelter, skin and bones with a request to send him over the bridge.

We found out pretty quickly he had something going on and ended up diagnosed with Megaesophagus. He got a Bailey chair and the right diet, and here we are over a year later.

Utley has been to the beach, goes out to events, he has been an amazing big brother to our hospice heart kiddos, even has a pig sibling!

The Calendar, once printed, will fund research for Megaesophagus. That's a big deal to him and us. Another way this sweet face will help others.

June is mega esophagus awareness month and he's in a contest to be in a ME calendar!

He's a rescue so we're unsure of his birthday- say March 10, 2009 His rescue day, he was saved from being euthanized in a shelter by Bullies 2 the Rescue! May 14, 2019 The day we got a confirmed ME diagnosis- August 9th, 2019 which led us to this wonderful group and getting him in the right routine

Yoda was a perfect boy for his cardiologist appointment so we stopped by a store on the way home so he could pick out a new toy ❤️

His echo shows essentially the same issues as when he was 3 months old- pulmonary stenosis and an atrial septal defect- and that the right side of his heart is having a hard time pumping and he’s in the pre-stages of heart failure. We’re adding a new med to his routine that will help his heart function. Unfortunately he is still not a good candidate for the balloon surgery.

It's baby Yoda's BIRTHDAY MONTH!

9 months ago Yoda came to Bullies 2 The Rescue- after a cardiologist visit and follow up to another specialist we were told his life expectancy would likely be weeks maybe months. I was told we'd be lucky if he saw 6 months, and if he lived to 8 months it'd pretty much be a miracle. The vet instructions were to keep him comfortable until he passes but guess what here we are- weeks away from his FIRST birthday! We'll be celebrating this little guy all month!

We’ve had a few people reach out to see how Yoda’s doing since losing his heart brothers. He is great thankfully - and I think it’s partly in thanks to our newest foster- so let us formally introduce Elmer!

After losing Jackson, Bullies 2 the Rescue needed a foster for a spina bifida puppy. We saw a big resemblance to Rusty and were lucky enough to become his fosters. He quickly became Yoda’s wrestling and napping buddy.

We also want to say a big thank you to everyone that has reached out or commented. ❤️ We read all of them and so appreciate it.

The day we've been dreading came yesterday.
Rusty made his way over the rainbow bridge where we know Jackson was waiting for him.

Rusty was something special- the happiest boy you could ever meet. He was so in tune with emotions, anytime you laughed his tail would go crazy, he could always tell who was sad in vet's offices and would leave me to go sit by them, whenever I was nervous at the vet he'd pick up his paw for me to hold. We called him our Velcro dog because he was always at our side. Between those big eyes and tail he could -and did- get away with anything.

We were hopeful for 3-4 months and are so lucky to have had over a year with him. In the time we had he went to a baseball game, saw a waterfall, made friends everywhere he went, went on a hike in the mountains, went to the beach with his Aunts, met Santa, had a big birthday party-as much as we could do until he decided he was ready.

Watching a two year old dog you love slow down because of a disease you can't stop is tough, really tough and saying good bye was heartbreaking-but it's all been worth it to have had him in our lives.

He captured the hearts of a lot of people and we're thankful for everyone from Bullies 2 The Rescue and Bullie Nation for loving him. People have asked if we're crazy and why would we sign up for the heartbreak- take one look at Rusty's face and that's why. And we'd do it 1,000 times over again. We'll miss him more than he'll ever know but are so grateful for the time we had.

Until we meet again, run free my sweet Rusty.
