Start your week off with a smile! Every Monday, we feature a local organization making lives better for Rhode Island cats and the people who love them. Check out the cat caretakers at South Kingstown Animal Shelter!

SKAS was founded in 1980 to accept neglected, abandoned, and stray cats, dogs, and other domestic animals. Serving as a regional center, animals are admitted from the towns of South Kingstown and Narragansett. A new and improved shelter building opened in 2012, where all medical care is made available to incoming animals. Shelter policy is to only euthanize because of incurable medical conditions or dangerous behavioral problems and not for space or length of time available.

South Kingstown Animal Shelter participates in several programs to better the lives of their resident animals as well as the greater community. As part of the Fear Free Shelter Program, animal welfare employees are educated about the emotional needs of rescue pets and how to increase their enrichment opportunities. SKAS also belongs to the Pets for Patriots Program, which aims to connect military veterans and their families with companion animals. Additionally, the Town of South Kingstown offers assistance for residents in need of low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for their pets.

While the shelter does not have volunteer positions available, donations are always encouraged! Checks and money orders can be made payable to the Town of South Kingstown and cash is also accepted. South Kingstown Animal Shelter is located at 132 Asa Pond Road, Wakefield, RI 02879, and is open weekdays from 8:00am – 3:30pm and on weekends from 8:00am – 2:30pm. Visit https://www.southkingstownri.gov/1331/Animal-Shelter to download an adoption application, spay/neuter application, or to learn more about the shelter’s programs. Email [email protected] or call (401) 789-5515 with additional questions.

This distinguished black gentleman is Jackson, our newest “Josie’s Cat” from Pet Refuge! At first glance, Jackson might look like a Scottish Fold. But this big boy likely suffered from ear mites early in life which led to his folded in “cauliflower” ears. We think they give him extra character!

Jackson is now 11 years-old and facing his second stay at the refuge. He was adopted two years ago and was well-loved, but his former owner became very sick and is unable to care for him now. Understandably, Jackson is quite confused and sad about his change in circumstances. He wants nothing more than to return to being a loved house cat!

Despite his uncertainty about being back in a shelter setting, Jackson is still so grateful to his volunteer friends who pet him and give him attention. He has a gentle personality and will make a great companion! Jackson even does well with children and other cats. He is hoping his third home will be his forever home.

For more information about Jackson, contact the Pet Refuge at (401) 294-1115 or make an appointment to visit 500 Stony Lane in North Kingstown, RI 02852. Visits to the shelter are for approved applications only, so please download an application at thepetrefuge.org and either drop off completed application or email to [email protected].

Don't pass by these gorgeous blue eyes! Meet Briggs from PawsWatch at the Community Cat Center. This Siamese guy is very special and in need of an equally special home.

Briggs is about seven years-old and has been at the center since June. This poor guy has overcome a host of medical issues, but the good news is that he finally has a diagnosis! Briggs has Triaditis, a condition causing chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and liver. Antibiotic treatment and a diet change have led to much improvement!

Briggs does still suffer from occasional vomiting. As a result, the center will continue to see him as a patient in the future. In the meantime, Briggs will need a forever foster home! He is a little attention hound who loves to snuggle and would prefer to be an only pet.

Pawswatch at the Community Cat Center is located at 39 Putnam Pike, Johnston RI 02919. The center is open Monday through Saturday, 9:00am – 1:00pm. For more information about Briggs, or to request an application, email [email protected], call (401) 603-0368 or visit https://www.communitycatcenter.com.

We got a late start on cooler fall weather this year - that means there's still an abundance of community cats being born outside. 😔 Just one person can make a difference by introducing Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) to your local colony! Learn more on how to get started here:

People all over the country, from all walks of life, care for outdoor cats every day. Like them, you’ve discovered cats in your community, and you want to help them. The millions of cats who make their homes outdoors are called community cats. You may also hear them called feral cats, though not a...

Start your week off with a smile! In time for Veterans Day, we were recently contacted by a new nonprofit based in New England. This Making a Difference Monday, we introduce you to Vets for Pets New England! They cater to veterans and active duty service members looking to adopt in our region, with a focus on Rhode Island. While they have been featuring dogs, cats will be added in the future, too! We look forward to seeing Rhode Island shelter and rescue cats placed with deserving service members soon. Visit https://kingdomofanimaliallc.com/vets-for-pets to see current pets up for adoption!
