Start your week off with a smile! Every Monday, we’ll feature a local organization making lives better for Rhode Island cats and the people who love them. This week we’re featuring “Best of Rhode Island” winner Ten Lives Cat Rescue!

Started in 2018, Ten Lives is a Rhode Island nonprofit organization committed to saving homeless, abused, and abandoned cats. They are entirely volunteer-run and utilize foster homes instead of a shelter building. In addition to working in the field to rescue cats, Ten Lives’ volunteers educate communities about cat overpopulation and how to make a difference.

How could we not support a rescue that offers a second chance to seniors, the physically and emotionally scarred, the behaviorally challenged, and those who need critical medical care? The “Forgotten Felines” program focuses on community cats who are not yet ready for adoption. With the use of socialization sessions, positive reinforcement, and consistency, specially trained foster families can make remarkable breakthroughs with these cats and ultimately change their futures.

While some groups shy away from cats considered more expensive and difficult to adopt out, Ten Lives has always reached out to help us and many groups across Rhode Island when a cat is in need of placement. They provide veterinary care and rehabilitation services for these special kitties before finding them adoptive homes.

Find out how to volunteer, foster, and adopt at https://tenlivescatrescue.org/. You can also directly support Ten Lives Cat Rescue by donating today! General donations are accepted online, as well as an opportunity to sponsor cats waiting for adoption. Donations are accepted for the Lazzy Fund to treat cats with illnesses or injuries that require veterinary care well beyond routine services. Supporters are also urged to join Ten Lives in reducing overpopulation through their “sponsor a spay” initiative to provide low-cost spay/neuter vouchers to community members in need of services for their cat(s).

What’s better than bringing home a handsome black kitty named Salem just in time for the start of fall? How about a supersized one! Salem from Providence Animal Control Center is our newest “Josie’s Cat”. He’s an extra-large adult and he’s hoping that will help him get noticed!

Like so many other shelter pets, Salem had to leave his beloved home environment because his person was no longer allowed to have him. Now he’s starting over again and with special needs. His care team noticed that Salem was drinking and urinating more than usual, and upon his veterinary exam, he was diagnosed as diabetic. Thankfully, he can be treated through an oral medication that’s inexpensive and easily added to his food!

Salem is already feeling better and will be heading back to his friends at Warren Animal Hospital soon to get a recheck. At a blanket-warming 17 lbs., keeping his weight at a healthy level should also help to better control his diabetes.

Salem is a big ol’ sweetheart and full of love to give! He previously lived with both a cat and a large dog and likely would do find in a home with other respectful pets.

Providence Animal Control Center is located at 200 Terminal Road, Providence, RI 02905. An application will need to be submitted and approved before scheduling a visit. An adoption application can be downloaded at https://www.providenceri.gov/animal-control/adoptions/.For more information about Salem, please call (401) 680-7591 or email [email protected].

This week's “Josie’s Cat” might have a scary name, but he's a true sweetheart! Meet Vader from Pet Refuge. Can you believe this angel was dropped off at a vet’s office for a scheduled euthanasia? He has no health or behavioral problems – he simply became an inconvenience when his owners had a new baby on the way. Thank goodness the staff refused to comply, and now this very good boy has a chance for a real family.

Vader is considered a senior at 12 years-old but is in fine health. He is a handsome, all black, big cuddly kitty. Vader is also a shelter favorite! He’s a champion biscuit-maker and quick snuggler, known to purr so hard that he does a cute little purring drool. Vader also gives and receives hugs! Shelter staff think he would make a purr-fect emotional support pet.

Vader gets along fine with Pet Refuge’s office cats. He’d likely do well in a home with older children and even friendly pets after a slow, supervised introduction.

For more information about Vader, contact the Pet Refuge at (401) 294-1115 or make an appointment to visit at 500 Stony Lane in North Kingstown, RI 02852. Visits to the shelter are for approved applications only, so please download an application at thepetrefuge.org and either email completed application to [email protected] or drop off.

Start your week off with a smile! Every Monday, we feature a local organization making lives better for Rhode Island cats and the people who love them. This week we’re featuring our cat-loving friends at Rhode Island Feline Rescue!

Rhode Island Feline Rescue incorporated in 2023 as a no-kill,
foster-based rescue. Founded by three animal rescuers, their staff is entirely comprised of volunteers. They serve community cats and cat families in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts.

Despite being a small and newer rescue, Rhode Island Feline Rescue has stepped up to the challenge of working to reduce cat overpopulation in the state. Their foster cats range from former street cats to nursing moms and kitten litters to an elderly bonded pair. You’ll also find them at local events across Rhode Island with cat-themed merchandise!

Find out how to volunteer, foster, or adopt at https://rifelinerescue.org/. You can also directly support Rhode Island Feline Rescue by donating today! One-time donations are accepted online as well as the option to donate on a recurring basis as a “virtual foster”.

Congrats to our former "Josie’s Cat", Stefan from Scruffy Paws Animal Rescue, and to his wonderful new family! Happy trails (and tails) to you! 😺

Wondering how Stefan's meet and greet went? Well the picture below speaks a thousand words. 😹

Congratulations Stefan! We are so happy for you bud. You were definitely a special case for us and we learned so much during the time you were in our care. We still remember the day you were surrendered and when you walked out of that carrier circling and screaming it scared the $ out of us. But after you settled in, we went for consultations, detetmined you were deaf, and spending time with you, we realized you were just a special boy that thrives on attention.

🗣 to everyone who donated to Stefans medical care so we could get him seen at the neurologist and have his catscan performed. This was so extremely helpful for us and his adopter to have this information. 💜

14-year-old Southie has a story that is not unique. He was living outside in West Warwick when a community member noticed that he had an eye injury and was struggling to eat. Thankfully, they contacted us for help and our Community Cat team immediately went out to humanely trap Southie.

Once in our care, we immediately noticed that Southie was very thin, his fur was falling out, and he had a nasty upper respiratory infection. After a thorough vet exam, we learned that Southie had severe dental disease, including a hole in the roof of his mouth, making it difficult for him to eat.

We also discovered that South had entropion, which is a condition that results in the eyelid rolling inward and irritating the eye. Surprisingly, Southie’s bloodwork was normal and the vet suspects that the fur loss is related to poor nutrition.

Southie’s veterinary care is estimated to cost nearly $4,000.

Help us in our fundraising efforts by participating in our 50/50 raffle now through August 31st. https://secure.givelively.org/event/ten-lives-cat-rescue/meow-mixer-50-50-raffle

Have you seen this delicious kitty? Meet Fig Newton from Cranston Animal Shelter, RI! He has a serious exterior but a sweet center, just like his namesake, and he’s ready to be your number one cookie.

Fig is estimated to be about a year-old and has sleek black fur and hypnotizing gold eyes. He is a fan of having both the inside and outside of his ears rubbed and scratched and demands more the second you stop! He is known for rubbing his head into your hand and purring loudly. Fig Newton is currently on a special diet to prevent urinary stones which he will need to continue in his future home. Thankfully, he enjoys it!

He is by nature a laidback guy, but Fig can become overstimulated with his paws or back and being touched. He does not enjoy being picked up but will naturally come over and seek attention from those he trusts. For that reason, he would do best in a home with no young children.

To meet Fig Newton, please visit the Cranston Animal Shelter between 12:00pm – 4:00pm, Tuesday through Friday, or between 11:00am – 3:00pm on Saturday. Adoption applications are available at the shelter, located at 920 Phenix Avenue, Cranston, RI 02921. Call 401-464-8700 or email [email protected] for more information.

UPDATE: GOAL REACHED! THANK YOU!

Help needed ‼️ Clover was recently adopted and is very loved but almost immediately began exhibiting symptoms of being unwell, including coughing, lethargy and not using her litter box. A vet appointment showed she has dental disease and a possible heart condition. She is in need of a follow up vet appointment for additional heart and lung diagnostics to better understand what is going on and how to manage it, as well as to rule out anything life threatening. The estimate is $775. Clover’s owner is currently a full- time nursing student who thought she was adopting a healthy cat companion. She doesn’t want to return her to the shelter, but doesn’t have the financial means for such large unexpected vet expenses right away. She does hope to be working soon, but needs some help for now to help Clover get better. Returning her to the shelter would be very sad for both of them 💔If you’d like to donate to help Clover and her owner, please do so at RIpetnetwork.org/donate. Thanks!

Start your week off with a smile! Every Monday, we feature a local organization making lives better for Rhode Island cats and the people who love them. This week, we’re featuring our friends at Rhode Island Pet Network!

Beginning as a social media networking platform, the small but dedicated team behind Rhode Island Pet Network formed into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in early 2023. They continue to showcase adoptable pets and the many rescue organizations around the state, but now can make their impact go even farther. Their nonprofit fundraises to cover as much of veterinary and behavioral costs as possible for adoptable Rhode Island animals and pets of owners who are struggling with their own health or financial hardship. These special cases involve those who have exhausted traditional avenues or have higher than usual expenses.

We were fortunate to work with them in their earlier days and more recently, when Rhode Island Pet Network helped to cover all the costs of our Second Chance family member, Gray. He was suffering from Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) last fall. Without them raising funds to cover a prohibitively expensive treatment protocol, Gray would not be with us today!

As they continue to grow, Rhode Island Pet Network plans to expand their presence across the state. They also aid owners who need to rehome pets or are otherwise unsure where to turn by connecting them with local organizations. Learn more about pet resources, upcoming events, and ways to help at https://www.ripetnetwork.org/. You can also directly support the efforts of Rhode Island Pet Network with a donation today!
