1st feeding. No pushing or shoving. Hardly any sound.

Until Splash came to clean up and puppies looked at her and said, "Nope. We're not done."

⚠️ With the hot, lazy summer days upon us it's time to be on guard for toxic blue-green algae. It is rearing it's ugly head again here in Colorado and potentially anywhere it's sunny and warm.

Keep your dogs safe by being aware. This stuff can appear in ponds, streams, kiddie pools and even bird baths.

The summer season has arrived, and with warmer temperatures comes the threat of dangerous blue-green algae in Colorado's waters.

BIS GMHR Int'l, Am & Mex Ch Cook's Midnight Bandit MH TT

I bred to Bandit twice and he's in the pedigree of almost all of my current dogs.
The first time I bred to him was with a daughter of FC AFC CFC CAFC DB's Cracker of Club Mead. The puppy I kept was much improved in type and structure. She was named Cat (short for Justamere Catalyst) and was a great retriever on land, but I could never convince her to deliver her bird to me before shaking water off her coat.
Cat's brother, Major, finished his SH and was an awesome hunter.
Cat's son, Gator (aka Tater), worked at Rocky Mountain Roosters, a 3,000+ acre hunting preserve in southern Colorado.
Her daughter, Belle, had three daughters that earned hunt test titles (JH, SH, MH) and a son that was trained for Search and Rescue. Another son retrieved numerous birds for an avid upland hunter. And at least four puppies in another of Belle's litters hunted with their owners and Bodie is still going at 13 years old.
Cat's daughter, Seeker, had at least two sons and a daughter hunt and/or run in hunt tests, plus two granddaughters that earned hunt test titles (Jenny SH and another working on HR), and two great granddaughters that have started titling. There are two more that will be running hunt tests.
For the second litter I bred Arwen, my granddaughter of FC AFC River Oaks Way-Da-Go Rocky, to Bandit. Again I saw improvements in type and structure. Only two puppies ran in hunt tests, but several others hunted. One of the puppies, Shadow, did a bang up job on an upland hunt with several more mature dogs when he was only seven months old. He also became a great retriever in the duck blind.
Arwen's daughter, Lily, had three puppies (sired by a CH son of Drifter) that actively hunted and one became a wheelchair assistance dog. Her son, Cap, from another litter was an avid hunter.
Lily's daughter, Ouija, had two sons that hunted and a daughter, Ethel, that was on her way to a nice career in hunt tests when she was sidelined by a mysterious illness.
Several of the dogs I mentioned have gone to the Bridge, but there are five here that carry on Bandit's bloodline.
I'm grateful to Jim Cook and his dog, Bandit.

Corky, the Lab from the post on Friday, has been called The Greatest Retriever Champion of all time.

Why?

Corky:
- won his first puppy stake
- earned 505.5 field trial points: 306.5 from Open competition and 199.0 points from Amateur competition
- earned an American Field Championship and Amateur Field Championship
- won 7 double headers
- qualified for 7 National Opens and was a finalist in 4 (1970, 1973, 1974, 1975)
- won the 1972 and 1975 National Amateur Field Championship and the 1971, 1973, 1974 Canadian National Field Championships
- was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992

As a 3 month old puppy, Corky was scheduled to fly from Minnesota to his new home in Illinois, but the airlines went on strike. As time passed, his new owner decided to have him shipped by rail, but as luck would have it Corky wound up with a layover in Minneapolis. By the time he reached his new home he was 4 months old.

Check out the video of Corky getting a bath just after he arrived at his new home.

Ridgewood Pl***oy went on win his field championship, amateur field championship and show championship to become one of only 37 Labs to earn a Dual Championship.

He is on the right in the photo with GlorLoral Watch My Smoke on the left. Jake Baird handled these dogs to first and second place.

"On March 1 [1963], a fast field of the nation's best retrievers and handlers gathered at the Shelby County Penal Farm near Memphis. A driving rain, with intermittent sleet and snow, prevailed throughout most of the first day, making dog work difficult. In the Open All-Age Stake, there were 45 starters, the field containing 13 Field Champions, and three Amateur Field Champions. The 1957-59 National Field Champion, Spirit Lake Duke, handled by Joe Schomer, and owned by Mr. & Mrs. George Murnane of Syosset, L.I., N.Y. was the leading contender for honors, since he had just the week before won the Open All-Age at Mobile, Ala., and in so doing, became the all-time high point Open Dog in the history of Retriever Trials.

"The difficult tests included a double marked retrieve, with a blind, and honoring, in downed corn, with standing water from the down pour, followed by a water triple mark, with dogs completing the first tests, moving to a tricky channel blind. The final and decisive test consisted of a triple land marking test, with a blind. The marks were in very heavy cover, and the blind out in an open field. The Judges, Alan Williams of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and Peter Stroh of Detroit, Mish., were able to pick their four place dogs without further tests.

"The coveted First Place honors went to Ridgewood Pl***oy, owned by Herb Shultz of Sheboygan, Wisconsin and handled by Jake Baird of Random Lake, Wisconsin. Pl***oy in this win, was taking his first Open Licensed first. It was just a year before that Baird handled this same dog to win the Qualifying Stake in Memphis. The dog is just three years old, and led the field a sizzling pace throughout the entire Open Stake. In second place was GlorLoral Watch My Smoke, also handled by Jake Baird, and owned by John Roughen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. T.W. (Cotton) Pershall took third place honors with Pomme De Terre owned by John Olin of Alton, Ill., and was in contention all the way. Fourth place was captured by an amateur handler Mrs. George Flinn of Greenwich, Conn. with her Stilrovin Tuppee Tee, the only Golden in the Placings. All the other dogs were Black Labradors. Judges Awards of Merit went to Spirit Lake Duke and Ace Hi Lone Star.

"Among the professionals attending were Joe Schomer, T.W. Pershall, Jack Robinson, Tom Sorenson, Jake Baird, Ed Carey, Bud Hedges, Gene Kirby and Ford Graham.

"On Sunday March 3 the weather took a break for the best and the Amateur All-Age Stake began under cloudless skies with a field of 23 dogs, comprised of the nation's top amateur handlers and dogs. Mrs. George W. Flinn of Greenwich, Conn. completely dominated the Amateur winning First Place with Mainliner Mike II, owned by Mrs. Flinn, and J.W. McAssey of Denver, Colo., and placing Stilrovin Tuppee Tee Second. The magnificent water blind work of these two dogs was the deciding factor in their wins. Close behind was Black Jet of Audlon, handled by Mrs. H.G. Keeler of St. Louis, Mo. In fourth place was Sand Gold Kim, owned and handled by Jerry Bernstein of Chicago, Illinois. Sand Gold Kim is a litter mate to the Open All-Age winner Ridgewood Pl***oy.

"The Judges, Cecil New of Memphis, Tenn., and Peter Stroh of Detroit devised four excellent tests to determine the relative merits of both dogs and handlers. The first series was a double mark in downed corn with a blind, and honoring. A diversion dry shot was fired. A triple water marking test followed, and the stake was culminated with a long water blind with a diversion shot fired in the area of a previous mark. The water blind proved to be the downfall of most of the dogs, some of which had had excellent work to this point. Judge's Awards of Merit went to Lady Minto owned by Jack Bonnell of Fort Dodge, Iowa, handled by Dr. Roy Hutchinson also of Fort Dodge; Yellowstone Ninety Proof, owned and handled by George Robert Pidgeon of Memphis, Tenn.; and La Sage's Neb, owned and handled by Mr. Robert Eckis, Boston, N.Y. All placed dogs were Labrador with the exception of Tuppee Tee, and Lady Minto which are female Golden Retrievers.

"The Qualifying Stake was won by Tred Avon Doll, owned by Pete Crittenden, Leesburg, Fla., and handled by Gene Kirby of Mobile, Ala.

"The Derby Stake was won by Macopin Triplicate, owned by Mr. & Mrs. George Murnane of New York, and handled by Joseph Riser."

Why we're called Justamere Ranch

When we first started breeding Quarter Horses, many years ago, we needed a name that would be memorable and distinguish us from our competition. At the time we owned a 5-acre piece of land that seemed too small to be called a "ranch." However we were inspired by one of our favorite horse trainers, Al Dunning, who had a place not much bigger than ours and who named it "Al Mosta Ranch." Since we owned just a mere 5 acres it seemed fitting that our place would become Justamere Ranch.

Although we still have a couple of horses, now our time is taken up by dogs - feeding dogs, training dogs, whelping dogs, competing with dogs and, of course, pooper-scooping!

This is a life-long passion for me: starting in 4-H (more years ago than I care to think about) and continuing through various breeds, including Irish Setters, Golden Retrievers, Doberman, German Shepherds and a Dane. I've trained and/or competed in field work, obedience, rally, tracking, bench shows, Schutzhund and (way back when) in junior showmanship.

For over 20 years now my passion has centered on the Labrador Retriever. I love watching their eyes light up when they get their first bird. It's as if they're saying, "THIS is what I was born to do!"
