"On March 1 [1963], a fast field of the nation's best retrievers and handlers gathered at the Shelby County Penal Farm near Memphis. A driving rain, with intermittent sleet and snow, prevailed throughout most of the first day, making dog work difficult. In the Open All-Age Stake, there were 45 starters, the field containing 13 Field Champions, and three Amateur Field Champions. The 1957-59 National Field Champion, Spirit Lake Duke, handled by Joe Schomer, and owned by Mr. & Mrs. George Murnane of Syosset, L.I., N.Y. was the leading contender for honors, since he had just the week before won the Open All-Age at Mobile, Ala., and in so doing, became the all-time high point Open Dog in the history of Retriever Trials.
"The difficult tests included a double marked retrieve, with a blind, and honoring, in downed corn, with standing water from the down pour, followed by a water triple mark, with dogs completing the first tests, moving to a tricky channel blind. The final and decisive test consisted of a triple land marking test, with a blind. The marks were in very heavy cover, and the blind out in an open field. The Judges, Alan Williams of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and Peter Stroh of Detroit, Mish., were able to pick their four place dogs without further tests.
"The coveted First Place honors went to Ridgewood Pl***oy, owned by Herb Shultz of Sheboygan, Wisconsin and handled by Jake Baird of Random Lake, Wisconsin. Pl***oy in this win, was taking his first Open Licensed first. It was just a year before that Baird handled this same dog to win the Qualifying Stake in Memphis. The dog is just three years old, and led the field a sizzling pace throughout the entire Open Stake. In second place was GlorLoral Watch My Smoke, also handled by Jake Baird, and owned by John Roughen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. T.W. (Cotton) Pershall took third place honors with Pomme De Terre owned by John Olin of Alton, Ill., and was in contention all the way. Fourth place was captured by an amateur handler Mrs. George Flinn of Greenwich, Conn. with her Stilrovin Tuppee Tee, the only Golden in the Placings. All the other dogs were Black Labradors. Judges Awards of Merit went to Spirit Lake Duke and Ace Hi Lone Star.
"Among the professionals attending were Joe Schomer, T.W. Pershall, Jack Robinson, Tom Sorenson, Jake Baird, Ed Carey, Bud Hedges, Gene Kirby and Ford Graham.
"On Sunday March 3 the weather took a break for the best and the Amateur All-Age Stake began under cloudless skies with a field of 23 dogs, comprised of the nation's top amateur handlers and dogs. Mrs. George W. Flinn of Greenwich, Conn. completely dominated the Amateur winning First Place with Mainliner Mike II, owned by Mrs. Flinn, and J.W. McAssey of Denver, Colo., and placing Stilrovin Tuppee Tee Second. The magnificent water blind work of these two dogs was the deciding factor in their wins. Close behind was Black Jet of Audlon, handled by Mrs. H.G. Keeler of St. Louis, Mo. In fourth place was Sand Gold Kim, owned and handled by Jerry Bernstein of Chicago, Illinois. Sand Gold Kim is a litter mate to the Open All-Age winner Ridgewood Pl***oy.
"The Judges, Cecil New of Memphis, Tenn., and Peter Stroh of Detroit devised four excellent tests to determine the relative merits of both dogs and handlers. The first series was a double mark in downed corn with a blind, and honoring. A diversion dry shot was fired. A triple water marking test followed, and the stake was culminated with a long water blind with a diversion shot fired in the area of a previous mark. The water blind proved to be the downfall of most of the dogs, some of which had had excellent work to this point. Judge's Awards of Merit went to Lady Minto owned by Jack Bonnell of Fort Dodge, Iowa, handled by Dr. Roy Hutchinson also of Fort Dodge; Yellowstone Ninety Proof, owned and handled by George Robert Pidgeon of Memphis, Tenn.; and La Sage's Neb, owned and handled by Mr. Robert Eckis, Boston, N.Y. All placed dogs were Labrador with the exception of Tuppee Tee, and Lady Minto which are female Golden Retrievers.
"The Qualifying Stake was won by Tred Avon Doll, owned by Pete Crittenden, Leesburg, Fla., and handled by Gene Kirby of Mobile, Ala.
"The Derby Stake was won by Macopin Triplicate, owned by Mr. & Mrs. George Murnane of New York, and handled by Joseph Riser."
