Not sure that a total ban on these breeds is needed but the standards definitely need to be looked at and severe penalties need to be served for those breeding outside the standards of the breeds.
What Percy went through in his very short life due to poor breeding was just plain cruel

Percy's Hideaway is a concept i came up with after finding myself unemployed and unmotivated. I have yearned to work with pets once more and utilise the skills developed over years of exposure to rescue so i decided it was time to get back into it.
For now Percy's Hideaway consists of just me, Jaimi, 31 and a single mum of 2 beautiful children. I have studied Vet Nursing, ran a rescue group for 7 years with one of the most important women in my life and have my microchipping license. I have a background in companion animal behaviours and nutrition and basic obedience knowledge.

Tonight I share with you all some sad news.

This morning Jaimi, Madisen and I had to say goodbye to Percy aka Chico.
We are all left shell shocked as he was doing so so well and we held on so tight to anything positive we were given about his future.

Percy took a turn for the worst, he started having seizures sometime during the night on Friday, Saturday we were concerned he was blind and he was having more trouble staying up right than before. Many smaller seizures followed over the weekend which just got worse with each one.
This morning Dr Vicky confirmed that he had lost his eyesight and was concerned he had a big bleed on the brain, his heart rate had also slowed right down.
It was decided that Percy/Chico had fought for his whole life for every new day and with the damage done to his brain and heart from the seizures that it was only fair to release him of his broken little body and set him free.
He left us surrounded by love, Jaimi, Madisen, Emily, Rachel and I were all with right to the end ensuring he knew how much he was loved by so many people.

I would like to thank Dr Vicky and the nursing staff at Mt Druitt Veterinary Clinic and Neil from Animal Holistic Therapies for everything they have done to try and help Percy.
He was a super special little man with an army of people behind him but it just wasn't enough.

Rest in Peace Little man.
You are missed by many

Percy has had a ruff couple of days, poor little man has had vertigo!
His world has been spinning and is been harder than normal for him to stay up right.
He has slept most of the last couple of days away and is doing so much better today.

Percy saw Neil from Animal Holistic Therapies today for his weekly Acupuncture and Laser therapy.
Good news, Neil and I could see improvement in his back right leg already. So happy to see his treatment is starting to work already.

Here he is feeling proud of himself and his achievements 😃
You just have to love that face 😍

He wishes he was as cool as Percy 😅

As you all know Percy had his xrays done this morning on his spine.
Percy started to show signs of pain in his back a couple of days after coming into care and his Xrays certianly explain why.
This boy has so many issues that we just don't know how he has managed to survive to be the age he is.
He has calcification in vertabraes, malformations, deformations, scoliosis, kyphosis, blocked vertabraes, possible disc herniation, possible Butterfly vertabraes and to top it off the right side of his heart is enlarged leading to suspicion of cardiomegaly.
His under bite is so severe he has trouble eating and his skull is full of fluid.

Is he in pain?
Yes he does show signs of pain in his back at times. Medication and hopefully Neil from the Animal Holistic Therapies will be able to work his magic to help with the pain as well.
Unfortunately the medication he is currently on could very well tip his heart into failure but until we get him sorted on pain management our options are limited. .

Where do we go from here?
Thursday he is booked in for his 1st appointment with Neil then after that we will be heading to see a Neurologist at SASH to discuss our options.

I want to be clear, I have discussed with our vet and amongst ourselves many times in the past week that if at any time Percys quality of life is not there or we are unable to manage his pain any longer then we will let him go.
Until then our vet, Jaimi, Madisen and I agree that he deserves a chance and for now we will do what we can to ensure he gets that.

I've attached 2 pics of his xrays to give you some idea of what we are dealing with.

Percy is 1 special guy who was dealt a very very cruel hand.
ALL of his issues are due to bad breeding, this means that there are other dogs out there from his breeder who are suffering as well as his parents.
People are paying thousands and thousands of $$$ for these pups expecting to have them for a long and healthy life and is just not the case.

THIS HAS TO STOP!
DESEX YOUR PETS and steer clear of BACK YARD AND UNETHICAL BREEDERS.

Percy is booked in for full body xrays tomorrow morning.
Please keep him in your thoughts, I have the highest confidence that Dr Vicky will give him 100% of her care but there is a chance he won't make it through the anaesthetic due to his condition.
Updates tomorrow.

Some days are good, some are bad. Others are a mixed bag. Today Percy went from being a normal playful dog to having his back locked up, unable to move and screaming in pain. With some massage and head elevation we were able to help him work through it but its still unfair.

What is Hydrocephalus in dogs?
Hydrocephalus (from the Greek, meaning water on the brain), is an excess of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that has leaked inside the skull, leading to brain swelling. CSF is the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, providing both nutrients and protection.

Is hydrocephalus genetic in dogs?
Congenital hydrocephalus is a genetic defect, and affected puppies, and their littermates and parents, should not be bred. Secondary hydrocephalus in dogs (acquired hydrocephalus) can occur for a number of reasons

Can a dog survive with hydrocephalus?
They may use medication, surgery, or radiation and chemotherapy in cases of tumors. It's important to see your vet at the first signs of hydrocephalus and allow them to determine the best course of action. When treatment begins early, it can prevent brain damage, and dogs can mostly make a full recovery.

What is the main cause of hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is caused by an imbalance between how much cerebrospinal fluid is produced and how much is absorbed into the bloodstream. Cerebrospinal fluid is produced by tissues lining the ventricles of the brain. It flows through the ventricles by way of interconnecting channels.

Treatment of Hydrocephalus in Dogs
Severe cases of hydrocephalus will be treated with corticosteroids, anti-seizure medications, furosemide, acetazolamide or omeprazole as needed and as directed by your veterinarian. In some instances, surgery to place a ventriculoperitoneal shunt can be performed.

How fast does hydrocephalus progress in dogs?
Once the skull has reached its limit, however, the fluid continues to build and a build-up of pressure inside the skull leads to neurological symptoms, usually beginning at around 8 to 12 weeks.
