Let's play!

Ups and downs for Dexter, but new meds are working and he is feeling better! As you can see, he LOVES his toys and treat! This only a few of the many he has received! THANK YOU for all your generosity, he LOVES all the squeaks and rattles and chews and treats! They are helping so much to occupy his growing puppy self! If you are thinking of sending Dexter a gift, please consider making a donation to Tunica Humane Society to help cover the cost not only of his care, but also of the many other dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that THS is caring for during this difficult time.

Dexter is feeling better...

04/04/2020

Update- Dexter has spent the day resting and sleeping, and he ate a some chicken and a little kibble tonight.

2 steps forward, one step back...
Dexter is not feeling well today. He woke up obviously not feeling well, didn't want to eat, running a fever, and breathing a little heavier. He's been to the vet this morning and is back home resting with some new meds. He has an elevated white count so his body is continuing to fight infection as a result of his mange. He's been doing so good this week, it's easy to forget how sick he really is.

Dexter's Journey...

This sweet pup saw Dr. Lisa today and everyone was shocked at how much he has improved in such a short time.

Dexter just happens to be with a foster mom that is the absolute best with pups suffering from mange.. Lori Umstattd has fostered so many precious dogs for the Tunica Humane Society and they always heal in record time.

Go Dexter Go! What a cutie he is!

Dexter continues to improve. Big thank you to the Flynn' s in Hernando and the Kohl's in Wisconsin! He is enjoying his toys and his blanket!

Wrinkle butt for days....Dexter is feeling so much better! Skin is improving daily as the scabs are drying up and coming off. Swelling has decreased dramatically, you can really see the improvement in his eyes and feet!

Dexter is feeling better today! He loves being outside....so glad to have a nice sunny day for him to enjoy! Didn't let him stay too long, don't want that skin to get sunburned!

I've learned a little bit of Dexter's story. He was found by a road out in the middle of nowhere in Eudora, MS. He didn't get there by himself. It's very likely that he was dumped there. He was headed towards a miserable death all by himself until Caitlin Howe happened to see him. Bless her, because she decided to stop and save him instead of leaving him there. Given the severity of his condition, she opted to let us at Tunica Humane Society take over his care. These are pictures of him when he was found.

Bath time sucks....but we got to snuggle afterwards. And look....both eyes open!

With everything around us coming to a screeching halt, sadly, animal abuse and neglect does not...

We took this young dog under the care of the Tunica Humane Society yesterday after I received a call from the young woman that found him. He was spotted wandering on the side of the road, outside Eudora, in rural Desoto County.

Was he dumped there... Probably so. If mange isn't treated in the early stages, this is the end result. Raging secondary infection, as a result of the mange. Swollen eyes, swollen paws, cracked skin, bleeding sores, constant itching, unimaginable discomfort for an innocent dog. So preventable with the proper treatment early on.

I can't tell you the number of calls I get from people wanting to give up their dogs because they have mange. Many of these poor puppies and adult dogs are simply taken away from their homes and dumped somewhere. Out of sight, out of mind.

I named this little fella Dexter. Dr. Lisa thinks he is 3 to 4 months old. At this point, we aren't even sure what kind of dog he is. His mange is that out of control.

And still he wags his tail...

We are going to give Dexter something to really wag about. A healthy new body, a happy new spirit and a loving forever home.

Please follow Dexter's Journey back to life and if you would like to donate to his medical care, please do so. It would be so appreciated by all of us at the Tunica Humane Society...

Potty break outside, then ate his dinner.....wagging his tail and wanting to be a happy puppy! Good news is his eye opened up a little bit!

Several people have asked if he needs anything. Toys come to mind. He's a baby, and when he is feeling better he will want to play. If you would like to send something directly to Dexter, let me know and I will pm you address. Thanks!

Sleeping away...

I don't even know where to begin. Dexter is barely recognizable as a dog. Every inch of his skin is swollen, infected, oozing, and hurting. Demodex mange doesn't get this way overnight. This little boy is only about 3 months old. He has spent his entire life suffering. Day after day, getting worse and worse, until, by some miracle, someone who cared found him. Someone who immediately reached out for help for Dexter. Thanks to Tunica Humane Society, Dexter is now safe. Healing has begun. Dexter, I swear from the bottom of my heart, you are safe.
