RATS ARE SOCIAL!
Rats are very social animals and therefore must live in same s*x pairs or groups.
Rats naturally live in colonies with hundreds of other rats. They raise their litters together, forage together, sleep together and groom each other.
There are studies which prove that lone rats kept alone can develop several issues including but not limited to: depression, reduced immune system, aggression and self mutilation. These can lead to other issues such as obesity and shorter lifespan.
When introducing new rats, it is best to intro on neutral ground. Introducing young rats to your existing colony is easier than older rats.
Rats also develop a deep bond with their owners and are able to pick out their owners among a group of other people. It is imperative to spend time playing and bonding with your rats
