For anyone wondering what I have been doing in my absence, I have been tending our gardens & the honey bees! Today I did a partial harvest & have about 34lbs of fresh golden honey!

**UPDATE** These scammers are still active despite my many reports to Instagram and have taken money from several people in our name. Please DO NOT send them any money & report them. I have temporarily disabled our Instagram account & DO NOT have a presence there currently.** It has come to my attention that someone has cloned us with the intention of scamming & ripping people off. They have dropped an "s" from the name calling them selves "SwampyGrubs" and are using our logo, pictures, and details, even going so far as to copy/paste our old comments into some of the pictures. They are active on both Facebook & Instagram, I have reported them appropriately. Please be aware, and contact us directly if you unsure if it is us you are dealing with.

Trying to tidy up some & found I have a few more old enclosures than I thought! I'm going to try & figure out a small Swampy's Grubs yard sale of sorts, probably next weekend, with all our excess enclosures & any other equipment we no longer need including lighting, hides, decor etc.

Slinky dinosaurs! The Sudan Plated Lizards getting a bath. As you can see from the video in the comments, it is not something they are particularly fond of 😂 Baths are a rarity for them, they have their own water supply that they drink from & slink through, but I do periodically give them a short soak so I can scrub off any loose scales with a toothbrush! Fun fact about these guys & gals, according to The Field Guide to East African Reptiles, a 10 million year old fossil of this lizard was found on Mfangano Island in Lake Victoria!

That time of year, the great Ootheca hunt is on! Across the street from us is a train line, and the fire lane for it becomes overgrown with brambles every year which they mechanically clear. Unfortunately, the "Bramble Lane" is a favorite transit for deer and laying site for the local Mantis population, so when they clear it every year hundreds of mantis egg sacks (Ootheca) are destroyed. I try to make sure I walk through every year in early spring to gather what I can find, moving most into the safe margins, and taking several home with me to put around the yard for natural bug control! Over the last few years the population had been dwindling, I was finding fewer & fewer egg sacks, however this year I was excited to see many of them (even if they are right in the path of the mechanicals coming in soon) for me to relocate, and take a few more than usual home for the fruit & veg gardens! Each one of these can have 100-500 baby mantis growing inside, and whilst the majority of them will become food for something else, probably their siblings, enough are surviving each year to lay new eggs! And whilst saving a few mantis Ooths each year may seem inconsequential to many, I am always happier knowing I can enrich my lil corner of the planet :)

Just moving stuff around the garage & realized I have a bunch of pre-loved enclosures I no longer need. Several screen enclosures, and a load of glass in everything from 10, 20L, 40B (one brand new, unopened), 30 talls, and a couple of glass shop displays (VERY large) that I was going to convert to enclosures. I'll try & get a bunch of pictures of everything I have available & I'll put up pictures shortly.

Argo, one of our temporary house guests, enjoying his collards for breakfast! Both Vic & Argo are staying with us short term so their owners can move home without having to worry about their scaly babies in the transition. Both are on bioactive substrates, substrate loaded up with cleaner bugs & microbes to dispose of the majority of the waste (I do still have to remove the hard white urates manually), and they also have a mixture of seeds in there that will periodically sprout when I damp down so they have fresh greens to graze on! Videos of their enthusiastic feasting in the comments.

I know it's been a looooooong time since I dropped a post, but in all honesty, after our decision to take a hiatus due to COVID there really isn't a great deal going on here other than day to day maintenance on the dragons & their enclosures, as well as bug maintenance to ensure the food supply keeps up! Hopefully that will change, I'm looking at my dragons trying to decide who to bring into the breeding rotation this year if we start up again. Todays work is an example of what I am doing in the time away from the public, splitting bug colonies to give them more room to reproduce & in turn increase bug (food!) output. "Splitting the colony" is exactly what it sounds like, once the bug population gets high enough & is stable, I split the colony in half into a new tote. If you have any questions on anything you see, please feel free to ask & I will do my best to help!

Slinky Dinosaurs! We are currently downscaling & reorganising, and as such these guys & gals are no longer part of our long-term breeding plan, so are now available! We have 5 Sudanese giant plated lizards (Gerrhosaurus Major), the sexes are unconfirmed but believed to be 3 female/2 male, and are (125) each.

Bath time is always one of my favorite times of the day! Not only is it a great opportunity for some hands-on time with the dragons, it is also a great time to see their colors & pattern at its best!

I have a pair of Occelated Uromasyx available, the pair shown below. Let me know if you are interested. The enclosure is not available.

Swampy & his great granddaughter Tango out enjoying the sun before it starts to get too cool out for the year. Yes, she is bigger than Swampy!

Our ocellated uromastyx eager for fresh greens from the garden! These were wild caught specimens, and as is usually the case they were extremely skittish when they came in. Whilst they don't act quite as skittish as they were, they are still not fond of being handled. They do however come running when I approach with fresh greens! Excuse the grubby glass, they like to make a mess.

I can't remember if I introduced this handsome fella. Meet Swampy, son of Swampy. He will eventually take on the torch as the face of Swampy's Grubs!

03/09/2020

These guys & gals are just as fond of roaches as they are superworm! Unfortunately the battery on my camera died before the rest of the stampede arrived!

03/09/2020

I think it's fairly safe to say the Red Runners are doing just fine 😂😂 As you can see, these guys can be insanely fast which is why I sort them outside, 1-2 runners when I'm feeding is easy to deal with, thousands scattering at once is a different matter entirely :/ If you watch the video you will see lots of lil red pods everywhere. Red Runners are live bearers, in a sense. They carry their egg case with them internally, and much like some other species of roach, they move the egg case in/out of their body as needed to keep them at the ideal temperature. Once they have been incubated & hatched, the empty egg case is dumped & a new one forms!

03/09/2020

The Discoid roaches are almost back up to speed! I managed to collapse the colony early in the year by feeding too heavily from it, resulting in me having only 6 adults & a few babies left to work with :( However, with some care, I am back up to 94 adults & a whole skedaddle of babies!

24/08/2020

Slinky dinosaurs coming along more & more every day! 3 of the 5 will happily take food from me now, the other 2 are still a lil skittish, though at least don't scatter & hide when I open the enclosure now.

14/08/2020

Kur the Pi**ed out "enjoying" the sun :/ I try to cycle all the dragons out through time in the sun when it is available, artificial lighting technology has certainly advanced over the years, however you still can't beat the real thing! It takes 4-6 hours of artificial UVB to get the equivalent of just 1 hour in natural sunlight.

07/08/2020

One of my favorite little oddities, our Mourning geckos. These gals are just one of several species that reproduce exclusively by parthenogenesis. This is the act of reproduction without fertilization, which is particularly helpful when your entire species is female! They just had their morning misting so have come out to drink, and I also just put their fig & bug Pangea in there so they are anxious to chow down!

Here is another fella we have. I've not listed him as available yet because in all honesty I'm having difficulty classifying him due to the mixed scale types. If you look at the pictures, you will see that he is a leatherback along his spine with a few normal scales mixed in, and a normal scale on the sides & limbs with leatherback scales mixed in. There are several possible causes, with the simplest is that it is just a random occurrence/mutation. Though it is also possible that he is a Chimera, the result of 2 embryos beginning to develop inside the egg & then merging into a single dragon, resulting in a single dragon with 2 different sets of DNA, one for each original embryo. Sometimes this is very clear & easy to identify, and other times like this not so much. In this case for a confirmation of Chimeraism I will need to send off samples for testing, but that will have to wait until the labs are not so busy with COVID testing. It could also just be a variant/unusual presentation of existing scale types, or a result of several genes interacting together. Regardless, I think he is an awesome looking dragon!

Here is an update of all our currently available dragons (except one who is on hold, it is marked on the picture which one). They range from 75-400 depending on color & morph combinations. We are NOT shipping any more this year, all dragons can be picked up/delivered within 20 miles of 46403. I'll add any relevant details to each picture.

The carrot patch was getting a bit thick & needed thinning out a bit, so not only do we get some yummy baby carrots for our dinner, the dragons & beasties get one of their favorite snacks, carrot tops! For anyone not familiar with us, we planted all the greens we need for the dragons ourselves this year & have had the opportunity to both grow & harvest fresh food daily, both for our animals & for the bugs we raise for them also. Being able to almost completely sustain ourselves (other than power for lights & a bug top up to keep the colonies fresh) has helped a lot with the current situation & has also added an entirely new level of appreciation, involvement & care for our critters.

Slinky dinosaurs! I know it's been a while since you saw these guys & gals. They are doing well. There were a few early issues due to them being captive caught specimens, but nothing unexpected & they were treated for the parasites without issue. Whilst they are all still fairly shy & usually scatter when I go inj the enclosure, this gal in particular is now friendly with me, and all of them will tolerate being held once I catch them!

Dragon Emporium!

Here at Swampy’s Grubs our aim is to produce strong, happy & health bearded dragons in a selection or morphs & colors to suit everyone! All our baby dragons are raised on a large variety of feeder bugs & salads to ensure optimum health, growth & color right from an early age, and are handled daily right from hatching so that every dragon going out is friendly and used to human contact. If you have any questions, either about our own dragons, or general advice about keeping bearded dragons please feel free to contact us. We also rehabilitate & re-home any rescues we are able take on that are suitable for placement if we have the space .
